Summer Solstice 2009 Print E-mail
The highlight of the Summer Solstice is the continuing conjunction of Jupiter and Neptune, both near the end of Aquarius and both in retrograde motion in the Solstice chart. Saturn, while not exactly opposing as much as he was at the Spring Equinox, is still the handle swinging the bucket of all the other planets, and will continue to exert a strong influence. A good thing, as Jupiter - Neptune can use some grounding.

What‚s that? Saturn a good thing? How can Saturn, representing limits, discipline and hard work be a good thing here at mid-summer, when we want to relax and enjoy the warm weather and long, sunny days? Yes, indeed. Setting aside the fact that self-discipline is needed to exist and succeed in our society, in this particular case it is even more important, to rein in the Jupiter Neptune conjunction.

Jupiter, called the „greater benefic‰ by the ancients, is often considered to be a bringer of good things, a fortunate influence. But he often is really more a bringer of, well, more. More of whatever. He is an influence to grow and expand, and doesn‚t pay much attention to what‚s growing and expanding, or to limits, but wants to go beyond them. If driving fast in a sports car is „good‰, he wants to go faster. If eating an ice cream cone is „good‰, he wants the whole carton. He has little conception of self-restraint, so Saturn needs to be the highway patrolman or the bathroom scale.

Neptune represents our dreams, our „urge to merge‰, our fantasies. All of those are good things, and we would be less if we didn‚t have them. But Neptune doesn‚t really pay much attention to how those things can be made to happen. There is a constant risk with Neptunian influences to stay so immersed in our dreams that the chance to manifest them slips right by us in the fog.

So with Jupiter and Neptune together we can see the combined influence to go really overboard in our dreaming. While that‚s certainly fine at times, certainly fun to do, it‚s not terribly productive. (Not that we need to be productive all the time, not at all. But it‚s probably not something we can do 24/7 and still pay the bills!) If we can‚t focus that energy and actually take steps to manifest those big dreams, those big ideas, then what good are they? If they are really good, shouldn‚t we try to put them to some sort of use? And if they are really just idle fantasies, shouldn‚t we be able to let go of them at some time and get on to something else?

So, Saturn can put the brakes on and bring us back down to earth, so we can do something with those dreams and visions. And the nature of an Ingress ˆ solstice or equinox ˆ provides a good time to start something new. With Pluto opposite the Ingress Sun, the pressure to break with old patterns in increased. Mars also makes a stimulating aspect to the Sun in this chart, providing a lot of dynamic energy to actually go and do something.

Of course, the Summer Solstice has the Sun at 00 degrees of Cancer. Cancer is the Cardinal Water sign, so emotions are highlighted, as is home, family and our personal foundations. Can we link the Jupiter/Neptune dreams with those issues? And can we find where Saturn‚s self-discipline can act to help us make those dreams come true?

Where 0 Cancer falls in your chart will suggest where you normally express ˆ and try to fulfill ˆ the issues of Cancer.

What follows is a brief overview of some of the possibilities this arrangement can make, using whole sign houses. If you have your actual birth chart, put these planets in it and read the appropriate section for where they really are. Due to the nature of various House systems in use, you may need to look at several paragraphs. Interceptions can move planets into houses different from the simple whole sign arrangement.

If it is in your first house, you try to build your personal foundations and security through your persona, through how you present yourself to the world. The Jupiter / Neptune conjunction would likely be in your 8th house, suggesting your current dreams deal with issues of shared resources, inheritances, or deeply transformative issues (out with the old, in with the new!) And Saturn will be in your 3rd house, suggesting that siblings or someone in your neighborhood, or how you relate to either (or both) can provide some energy to deal with those issues.

Should 0 Cancer be in your 2nd, then your own values / value system is ripe for some new beginnings, and the the conjunction will be in your 9th ˆ so dreams involving higher education, long distance travel and / or belief systems have been occupying your time. Saturn will be in your 4th, so put some effort into seeing how these things relate to your basic security issues, or how you can use the security you have to pursue those dreams.

If in the 3rd, dealing with siblings and your local environs, then the dreams fall in the 10th, the house of ultimate goals, and the needed grounding is in the 5th. Creative risks in pursuit of those goals might be one way to make them happen.

A 4th house placement of the Solstice Sun focuses this beginning in the area of your chart that deals specifically with your foundations and base of security. Jupiter / Neptune will be in your 11th, so activities involving your circle of friends will be where the dreams are, and Saturn in the 6th suggests that your daily activities, work and routines are where you need to look for the discipline to bring these dreams to fruition.

If 0 Cancer is in your 5th, re-examine how you relate to your creative endeavors, children, or how and what kinds of risks you take. The urge to merge is especially strong, sitting in your 12th house, so dreams of the „big win‰ in, say, Las Vegas, may be on your mind. Saturn in the 7th then asks for feedback and support from your significant other to help you rein in what may be counter-productive urges.

In the 6th house, the Ingress Sun highlights your job and your daily routines. How you present yourself to the world, the 1st house, is where Jupiter and Neptune are active, and Saturn in your 8th suggests that an awareness of your use of shared resources might be good to keep in mind as you engage in this self-evaluation.

The Ingress Sun in your 7th can produce fantasies regarding your significant one-to-one relationships. The dreams of expansion are in your 2nd house, your personal resources and values, and Saturn is in your 9th. Can you use higher education (or anything that broadens your perspective on the world) to advantage in developing those resources, or adjusting what you think is important or valuable in your life?

Should 0 Cancer be in your 8th house, then Jupiter / Neptune will be in your 3rd, and Saturn in your 10th. So the interest in your highest goals should factor into the dreams of how you interact with your siblings and with your local environs. Don‚t let the dreams side-track those aims.

A 9th house placement of the Sun puts Saturn in the 11th and Jupiter / Neptune in the 4th, so get some input from your circle of friends on how you can use your dreams to build or reinforce your foundations and security base. Bounce those ideas off people you trust to get some objective views on what may or may not be realistic.

If in your 10th, the big dreams of Jupiter Neptune are in the 5th and the needed discipline shown by Saturn is in the 12th. Again, the dreams might relate to the "big win", or maybe about being center-stage in some way. Saturn over in the 12th wants you to examine how that might fit in with your deepest beliefs. Since these are 12th house energies, give yourself time for the sub-conscious to bubble to the surface.

If the Ingress Sun is in your 11th house of friends and associates, the fantasies lie in the 6th house of daily routines, and the grounding is to be found in the 1st ˆ where you put on your public persona and establish your "identity." Can you use a "facelift" and your circle of contacts to make progress toward landing that "dream job"?

0 Cancer in the 12th puts Jupiter and Neptune in your 7th. Be aware that you may, for the next few months, anyway, tend to project those sub-conscious feelings onto your partner, hoping that they will take the action you want. But Saturn will be in your 2nd, asking you to take full responsibility for what you believe is important. Rather than putting the burden of this on your partner, bounce your ideas off of them for feedback.
