What's Your Sign? Print E-mail

story by Jessica Husek

The constellations, which were originally used for navigation, are now used to describe personality and character.

Thomas Robertson, physics and astronomy department chair, said the constellations were named and studied about 4,000 years ago. Astrological signs are located along the ecliptic, or the path along which the sun appears to move through the sky, he said. The zodiac represents the 12 constellations that lie along that path, he said.

“The constellation in which the sun appears at the moment of your birth is defined as your astrological sign,” Robertson said.
Ancient astrologers connected constellations to stories and mythology, as well as using them as a physical guide and agricultural calendar, he said.
“They were able to take random patterns and put them into context,” he said. “They could tell from the positions of the constellations how to get home or when to harvest their crops.”

Alicia Katz, owner of Wandering Star Designs, said modern astrologers use the constellations for personality assessment. By using astrological charts, they are able to map out the exact locations of the sun, moon and planets at the moment a person was born, she said. They use this information to determine each person’s astrological sign and the typical traits for each sign, Katz said. For example, Scorpios, or people who were born between October 23 and November 22, are typically intense, dramatic and mysterious, she said.

Not all Scorpios, however, are exactly alike, she said.
“You have one sign that you identify with most, but you have a little bit of all of the 12 signs in you,” Katz said. “They vary according to degrees of importance to each person.”
Astrological charts also contain 12 Houses or sections that represent different areas of life, she said. For example, one house represents pleasure, while another represents relationships, she said.
“The houses help determine how your personality will play out in all areas of your life,” she said.
The signs are also divided according to their “qualities,” she said. The three qualities include Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable signs, she said. Cardinal signs are typically strong in character, while fixed signs are stable and reliable and mutable signs are adaptable, Katz said.

Putting all the information together creates a unique set of traits, she said. “From the charts you can map out your personality,” she said. “You can find out why you have certain strengths and weaknesses. You can learn what you’re hardwired for.”

That information can be used for personal growth and success, Katz said. “People find comfort in knowing why they are the way they are,” she said.

February 20, 2008: Full Moon Lunar Eclipse Print E-mail

Henry Seltzer, AstroGraph:
Follows Mercury's change of station on February 18th by a mere two days, and also aspects Saturn, as Venus begins to conjunct Mercury. These two planets will draw closer and closer to Chiron in Aquarius as the month unwinds, completing in the early days of March. This important Full Moon also brings renewed awareness to the transit of Pluto into the first degree of Capricorn. The Lunar Eclipse occupies the second degree of Virgo, and of Pisces, therefore highlighting the energy of these two signs and their spiritually vibrant polarity within the larger picture of this month's cycle. The Sabian Symbols are: "A large white cross" and "A squirrel hiding from hunters," and together they suggest the frequently overlooked power of the mystical to transform our lives. Jones' keyword for the Sun degree is CAUTION, and we must temper our currently very high ideals and expectations with a large dose of practicality.

The Science of Eclipses.

Full Moon in Virgo with a Lunar Eclipse:
On this Full Moon, the Sun in Pisces opposes the Moon/Saturn conjunction in Virgo. This opposition enlivens the integration of healing through transcendence and attending to bodily health. But it may also bring up more negative feelings of inertia/limitation due to the perfectionism of Virgo and the negations/denials of Pisces.
This year the Moon and Sun are joined respectively by the South Node in Leo and North Node in Aquarius. Along with Pluto in Capricorn (transformation through concrete action) and Mars in Gemini (swift diversified actions) these planets create a powerful mystic rectangle. This configuration requires us to walk the path of mindful inquiry, in a fully-embodied yet open-minded way, in order to realize our unbounded potential. The Venus/Mercury (heart/mind) conjunction and Chiron/Neptune (transcendent healing) in Aquarius provides the fuel for the mind to awaken to Buddha nature. On the other hand, if your agenda is wasting time partying with drugs and alcohol, Saturn in Virgo and Pluto/Jupiter in Capricorn will bring you right back to reality by showing you the true harmful and useless nature of substances.

AstroWisdom:
When the Moon is full in Libra, it is reflecting the light from the Sun in Aries. The polarity of these two opposing signs represents knowing self in an effort to know others; thereby allowing others to truly know us. The Libra Moon reflects the light of Arian individuality and uses it as the fuel for greater understanding of others.
Know thyself and the true nature of all things will be revealed.
As with every Libra Full Moon, we have an opposition to a blatantly self-interested Aries Sun, but on this Full Moon this opposition is squared by a Mars in Cancer/Pluto in Capricorn opposition creating a cardinal grand square. So, take a deep breath, because this grand square is challenging us to work out relational problems no matter what it takes. Successful engagement with a grand square comes when we refuse to get caught in the idea that the way of any one planet in the configuration holds the answer to all the issues.

The Astrology of 2008 Print E-mail

2008.jpgBy Henry Seltzer

This overview of the astrological events of 2008 is intended to help us to experience with as much grace as possible the challenges that are coming down in our lives and get the most out of them as we prepare for the changes in our social structures that these next few years will bring. I firmly believe that it greatly helps to get the astrological perspective on important life challenges so that they may appear in a greater context, a cosmic one if you will.

In these next five years, until the end of 2012, we will see all the major outer planets change signs, and re-align in the first square configuration of Uranus and Pluto that follows their conjunction of the sixties. These changes of sign indicate world transformation of significant magnitude, as who would doubt in the light of what we have already seen so far. For starters, Pluto entering the sign of Capricorn will transform the corporate power structure and bring out the worst of it and also the best of us in response to that worst, as the twelve-year prior transit of Pluto in Sagittarius has done for religious zealotry. Pluto enters Capricorn in 2008, Uranus will enter Aries in 2010, squaring Pluto, and Saturn forms a T-square to Uranus and Pluto from 2009 - 2011. Jupiter will conjunct Uranus in the midst of this crucial time period, in 2010. Neptune will first enter Pisces in 2011 and then re-enter in 2012.

The most significant astrological event in 2008 is the entry of Pluto into Capricorn. Capricorn represents established authority, and Pluto's presence in Capricorn indicates changes to the important structures of our lives, both individually and collectively. Pluto enters Capricorn on January 25th, but then retrogrades back into Sagittarius mid-June, only re-entering Capricorn near the end of November. These transition times will be important, but the symbolism of the Capricorn ingress will still pervade the entire year.

In terms of the collective, Pluto in Capricorn will bring out the best and the worst of our current system of government by the corporate power elite. We will see flood tides threaten all entrenched power structures, especially those that have lost their relevance for the present day, and there will be a measurable back-lash from the establishment in response. We have already seen the beginning of this action and reaction over the past few years, one recent example being the candidacy of Barack Obama. Just a few short years ago, who would have expected to see a woman and a black man as the Democratic nomination front-runners? People in this country are finally tuning into the concept of necessary change in the power structure, as evidenced in particular by this man's popularity. The truth is that the establishment must change, and that it will not change willingly, and that there will likely be a struggle that will grow greatly in magnitude over the next few years as the pendulum swings.

On the personal level, as 2008 continues to unfold we are sure to see many changes in the structure of our individual lives as well. There are places where we know we are stuck, but seemingly powerless to make a move, and these are likely to be "up" for us over this next year. Then there are the places that we are just as fully stuck, but in a relatively unconscious way, and these may also become more noticeable for us as the year progresses. We tend to regard setbacks as bad luck that we wish had never occurred, but the truth is that these very setbacks can be powerfully healing for us if we learn something from them about our hidden patterns and agendas. This year is sure to be one to remember, bringing us events that are eye-opening and perhaps heart-opening as well.

There are also several retrogrades to deal with throughout the year. Coming first in the yearly cycle, Mars is retrograde throughout January, carried over from November of last year. The retrograde of Mars implies that we will have the chance to look closely at our desires and our aggressive urges as we connect more fully with our truest sense of ourselves. Although Mars turns to direct motion at the very end of the month, it takes until March to fully recover in terms of lost zodiacal longitude, referred to as his retrograde shadow. During this entire time we may find ourselves somewhat stymied in moving forward with what we intend to accomplish, but perhaps all the richer for these delays in terms of our understanding of our situation. Mars retrograded into the last degree of Gemini to exactly oppose Pluto just as the year began, and that alignment is significant, and signals that 2008 will be a powerful year of transformation.

Mercury also retrogrades three times this year, the first one beginning toward the end of January. During these periods of time, mechanical and communication breakdowns become the norm, and we do better to reflect on our circumstances. It is better not to move ahead with new plans at this time, as these will likely change after the retrograde period has passed.

The Mercury retrograde periods throughout the year are as follows, with the shadow period also indicated:

January 28 to February 18th, shadow lasts through March 9th
May 26th to June 19th, shadow lasts through July 4th
September 24th to October 15th, shadow lasts through October 31st
Then there are the eclipses. These are important lunations with a greater impact than usual. There are two important eclipse periods to consider, six months apart, beginning with February:

February 6th Solar Eclipse (New Moon and Aquarius line-up)
February 20th Lunar Eclipse (Full Moon)
August 1st Solar Eclipse (New Moon with Mercury and Venus both featured)
August 16th Lunar Eclipse (Full Moon conjunct Neptune)
The Full Moon eclipse of August 16th that brings Neptune into the picture also triggers a Mars – Pluto square. The month of August is therefore quite a powerful one for personal relationships and for going out and getting things done.

In contrast, the eclipses in February signal a month that is largely an internal one for several reasons. There are the retrograde periods of Mercury and Mars, as Mars re-enters Cancer and recovers his lost zodiacal ground. Then, the Solar Eclipse of February 6th conjuncts mystical Neptune, along with Mercury and Chiron lined up in Aquarius. There is also the February 19th entrance of the Sun into Pisces, initiating a period of time that is always a little removed from ordinary reality. We emerge in March from our thoughtful stance more ready to fully participate in world events, particularly so at the time of the New Moon of March 7th. This powerful lunation conjuncts Uranus, and represents a spring-board into a different way of looking at our lives.

Saturn in Virgo is also trine Pluto during the first half of 2008, beginning in late January and repeating the symbolism of Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn's sign. This configuration indicates that something must shift in the organization of our lives, and also in the surrounding social structure, and is particularly strong at the very beginning of May when Saturn stations. The confluence of these mighty outer planet energies echoes the theme of transformation that was so powerfully present in September 2001 when they were opposed. The present aspect being a trine does make for an easier blending. You might want to ask yourself where Saturn is in your individual chart, and whether that area of your life might not be transforming for you at this time. If changes are in the works for you they are likely to be necessary ones that have been waiting in the wings for some time now, and have only your preconceptions to hold them back from manifestation. The easiest way to get through might be to simply let go.

Saturn opposes Uranus during the second half of the year, meaning that we will likely experience quite strongly the push-pull of these two opposing energies, for holding back (Saturn) and for sudden change (Uranus). This configuration is most intense during October and November when the opposition becomes exact. The signs most affected are the mutable signs of Virgo, Pisces, Gemini and Sagittarius. Saturn is all about maintaining the status quo, digging in to resist change, while Uranus promotes the sudden shift. Uranus works through epiphany, the realization that comes in an instant and utterly transforms our thinking. As Shakespeare said, "there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so," and the new perspectives that Uranus brings to the table can be the precursor of massive changes in our lives. The opposition is exact at the time of the November 4th elections, which will undoubtedly reflect the polarity of change versus resistance to change that we have been seeing for some time now in the political picture. These energies of Saturn and Uranus can also work together at this time, creating a force for moving through the idea stage into concrete realization. During the whole course of 2008 we will feel this one-two punch delivered by the interaction of Saturn, first with Pluto and then with Uranus, clearing the way for necessary changes to actualize and to transform our lives from the inside out.

It is also important to mention the mutual reception and semi-sextile between Uranus and Neptune which becomes more significant as the year unfolds, and which represents the possibility of seeing our situation a little differently, with a greater reliance on the working out of Spirit in our lives. Uranus and Neptune were conjunct in the mid-nineties, the impetus for new beginnings of spiritual and imaginal achievement stemming from that powerful time of new visualization is still with us, although of course in some ways sadly side-tracked over the last few years. The impulse for new solutions will burst through again and again over these next few years, especially in 2010 when Jupiter conjuncts Uranus as it enters Aries for the first time. And this impulse will eventually triumph, since it is the direction of our spiritual evolution. We have the responsibility of helping it along as best we can over these crucial years of the transition.

Destiny Nodes enter Aquarius-Leo Print E-mail

by Mark Dodich

The nodes of the moon represent our karma and dharma, or the sum total of past actions and the path of growth in this life, respectively. In mid-December, they entered Aquarius and Leo and stay until August 2009. Both you as an individual, and society as a collective, are opening to these energies. Think back to previous cycles to get a hint about changes ahead for you: May 1989-Nov. 1990, Nov. 1970-April 1972. Leo wants to play and open hearts, and Aquarius wants to take the service out to humanity in a very large way. The energy ahead asks you to get involved in the world to lead a better way, yet to simultaneously keep your detachment so that you do not get caught up in the melodrama of the world or the people around you. It is time to get creative and invent something colorful and innovative.

Mercury Retrograde 2008 Print E-mail

by Mark Dodich

Quick Mercury gives the optical illusion of moving backwards about three times each year. When the winged messenger is in this re-visioning phase, it is time to  make a behind the scenes plan for future application. Instead of taking the negative Oh My God approach to this sometimes debilitating phase, constructively use this time to study, tend to old business, improve communications skills, and update equipment such as computers, autos, and software. Be clear in your communications: I was to meet friends at a neighborhood restaurant where the friend could only remember the ‘fruit’ in the name. Smart guy that I am, I said I knew exactly where it was. I had dinner alone at Papaya Thai and my friends ate at Mango Thai. If you know the house area of your natal chart holding the sign and degrees of Mercury retrograde, you will know where you can get the most from your effort. In the 7th house of your natal chart, work on your significant relationships. In the 10th house, tend to career issues such as redoing your brochure or web site. If Mercury moves backwards across a planet in your natal chart, its effects are increased; look at the meaning of the planet  being transited for additional information.

Jan 28-Feb. 18, 24-8°Aquarius: Reconnect with old friends, tend to computer issues, and invent a new way.

May 26-June 19, 22-12 Gemini: Travel, write, share ideas that will be useful in the future. Use care in signing contracts.

Sept. 24-Oct. 15, 23-7 Libra: Relationships and all types of social activities can be revised or planned.

In all retrogrades, keep plans flexible so they can adapt after the cycle is complete.

Professor Claims Proof Of Star Of Bethlehem Print E-mail
By Maria Arita  ― The Star of Bethlehem has befuddled scholars throughout the ages. Now, a Texas law professor claims to have scientific proof that the Star was real, and not purely biblical myth. He has another major discovery as well, which resulted from his study of the Star.

Texas A&M adjunct law professor Frederick Larson began researching the Star after putting up a nativity scene for his daughter. The lawyer in him, Larson said, required him to investigate what it was that he was putting up in his front yard. Beginning with the book of Matthew, he ended up on a decade-long odyssey into astronomy.

Larson is emphatic in saying that, although his quest was initially faith-driven, it became much more. "If I'm going to make a star hypothesis," he said, "I want to know, what did it do? Was it an angel? Was it a comet? Was it a myth?"

Predicting the Outcome of Football and Elections Using Astrology Print E-mail
by Gary Lorentzen

Thirty some years ago I sat through a series of workshops on horary and electional astrology conducted by the late Dr. Marc E. Jones in which he suggested that the aspect between the two rulers of the Ascendent and Descendent should be considered as part of the judgment of the final outcome of any situation.   Then a couple of years later, in a workshop led by Diana Stone, a similar idea was promoted in something she called the "Key Cycle."  By the mid-1980s, I was experimenting with this idea and during a football game, whose chart had Capricorn Rising, I noticed that the ruling planet, Saturn in Scorpio, was closer to the MC than the Moon in Virgo, and the team that carried the ball first won the game.  I theorized that the team that carried the ball first, or perhaps better stated, the team making the first OFFENSIVE play, is represented by the ASC and the team that makes the first DEFENSIVE play is represented by the DSC.

I tested that theory on the next televised game,...

Pluto: Planet or Not? A piece written for The Tree Magazine Print E-mail
The planet Pluto made headlines recently when it was demoted from full planet status. This name change doesn't alter the fact that Pluto is still out there, but what happens in astrology when a new planet is discovered (like Pluto in 1930 or Neptune in 1846)? Did Pluto's discovery mean that all horoscopes prior to 1930 were suddenly void? What about the discovery of new "dwarf planets" and asteroids like Ceres? Do they have the same impact on astrology as new planets?

An Interview on the Moon Print E-mail
The Moon represents feelings and emotions. Like the Moon in the sky reflecting the Sun's light, the Moon in the birth chart is reflective, soulful and sensitive. The Moon represents the instinctive, intuitive part of you. When you respond without thinking, almost as if driven by primal instinct, that is the Moon acting in your life. The Moon is also a symbol for mother and by sign shows what you need to feel nurtured. Aspects, (lines of energy), from other planets to the Moon describe your relationship to "Mum", plus shows how well you understand your own emotional needs or not as the case may be.

Planetary Cycles and Relationships: Astrological insight into the rhythm of relationship Print E-mail
Ever wonder why so many of your relationships don't get past the 2 year mark? Or why when they do, the 7 year itch proves so challenging? Or are you envious of couples who are still going strong after 12 years of love and happiness? Planetary cycles can provide insight as to why specific anniversaries highlight certain issues in relationships. You will notice these cycles with partners of all kinds, including friends, business associates, acquaintances and family.

Each of the 10 planets, (including the Sun and Moon) has its own unique cycle. In cyclical work such as this we are most concerned with planetary cycles that complete in one life time.

The Physics of Astrology: Origin and Physics of the Sentient Universe Print E-mail
Mysticism is very subjective, seldom taking the physical world into account, only going so far as to affirm that we exist, although quite often in a profound way. One important qualification can be added: as Descartes stated; "I think, therefore I am." Within the whole of reality, within the vast domains of philosophy and science, can there be anything more vital and important? When it comes to each of us as unique individuals, I think not. Yet human experience begs the question: is there any intrinsic relationship between the existence of mind and the universe itself? Scientists have come up with very convincing theories, backed by calculations, that describe the origin and possible fate of the universe. Unfortunately, you and I, and mankind as a whole, seem to come out of these theories as some sort of accident, rather than with any kind of intent. 'We have no cosmic purpose, we should find meaning within our lives, and be content with that,' they tell us. I beg to differ. My own mystic intuition leads me to believe that mind was present at the formation of the universe, and more importantly, the reason for the existence of the universe--nothing less.

Generational Horoscopes Print E-mail
People who are born and grow up in roughly the same period of history share many characteristics. Their attitudes are formed by common experiences. These are "the generations," and we can paint a miniature portrait of each of them by using the outer planets as "brushes." The traits of each group are revealed by the signs which the three outer planets are in when they are born, and the mutual aspects they make in their birth charts.
