Ellen DeGeneres's Q Rating |

Ellen DeGeneres's debut on American Idol last week drew high ratings and praise, with fellow judge Kara DioGuardia saying that she was kind and candid in assessing the vocal talent. Also last week, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was renewed for three more years, while The New York Times revealed that her Q rating (popularity) made her well-positioned to takeover daytime TV when Oprah departs.
Ellen DeGeneres (like Oprah) was born with a Sun-Venus conjunction in Aquarius (January 26, 1958; 3:30 am; New Orleans, LA). Ellen's Venus is exactly opposite Uranus, giving her a quirkiness and willingness to experiment in the relationship department. Since Juno, the marriage asteroid, trines her Venus, she readily moves into a committed relationship, as her marriage with actress Portia De Rossi will attest.
Oprah's and Ellen's Sun-Venus conjunctions in Aquarius are located in the U.S.'s third house of media where they square the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. Oprah's Sun-Venus squares her Saturn in Scorpio, while Ellen's Sun-Venus squares her Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in Scorpio – all aligned with the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. With these placements, they naturally shape the American dialogue.
Last week transiting Uranus, the ruler of her Sun sign, was forming a dynamic square to Mars in her first house, giving her an energetic new start. Over the next few months transiting Jupiter and Uranus will conjoin her progressed Sun at 28º Pisces, a very favorable alignment that may vault her into superstar status. However, with transiting Saturn opposing her progressed Sun and her progressed Juno opposing her Mars, the astrologer may question whether Ellen's relationship with her wife will survive.

The Market Outlook for 2010 |

A NewsScope reader wonders if I do any market forecasts. After scanning what financial astrologers such as Ray Merriman and Arch Crawford have to say about 2010, he can't find any telling cycles. With the breathtaking dive from recent highs over the last two weeks, investors want to know if we're heading into a double-dip recession. Here's my take...
In terms of planetary cycles, the current Saturn-Pluto square is a strong bearish signal. This aspect becomes more significant than usual because it's aligned with some of the key horoscopes* used to chart financial and economic growth. In the NYSE chart (May 17, 1792; 10:10 am; New York, NY), transiting Saturn was exactly squaring the natal Part of Fortune last Friday when U.S. market bulls capitulated.
The Saturn-Pluto square is also aligned with the U.S. Venus-Jupiter conjunction in early Cancer, which is found in the eighth house of credit, debt and mortgages. The influence of transiting Saturn and Pluto on these two planets can be seen in the political arena, which has held debates about long-term debt and short-term stimulus as well as regulation of the financial system – all of which affects market conditions.
A more beneficial cycle coming into play is a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction which will be strongest in May and June. This combination favors the technology sector, which may temporarily keep the rest of the market buoyant. However, Jupiter and Uranus will be forming hard aspects to Saturn and Pluto in August and off and on over the next two years. This challenging configuration indicates high volatility and repeated unpleasant surprises that weigh heavily on any upward trend.
* My article "Tracking the Stock Market with Astrology" will be featured in the May issue of Dell Horoscope magazine, which discusses how planetary cycles, and horoscopes for the NYSE and the U.S. should be used together to make financial forecasts. Stay tuned for excerpts at www.neptunecafe.com .

China's 3:00 pm Horoscope |

Last week the Obama administration announced that it would welcome the Dalai Lama for a visit to the White House, in spite of China's protests that the religious leader is pushing for Tibetan independence. U.S.-China relations have deteriorated recently over internet censorship, a U.S. arms deal to Taiwan, and monetary policies. China's horoscope is traditionally set for 3:15 pm (October 1, 1949; Beijing).
After some review of China's history, it seems that a 3:00 pm time works better, which was the moment Mao began his independence announcement, rather than when he finished. Checking on key progressions to and from the Midheaven helps verify 3:00 pm. For example, China conducted its first nuclear bomb test on October 16, 1964 when progressed Mars was squaring the Scorpio Midheaven (orb 0º20').
Nixon "opened China" by his state visit that began on February 21, 1972 as the progressed Midheaven was sextile progressed Neptune in Libra, the sign of diplomacy (orb 0º11'). Mao (the beloved leader) died on September 9, 1976 as the progressed Midheaven and Venus were exactly conjunct (orb 0º02'). The Tiananmen Square incident on June 4, 1989 took place as the progressed Midheaven and progressed Moon opposed each other (orb 0º01'), while aligned with natal Uranus.
From this starting point, we can tell how upset China's leadership is over the Dalai Lama's visit to Washington this coming February 17-18. The current reactionary, fear-inducing square between Saturn and Pluto is hitting China's Uranus, the ruler of its revolutionary Aquarius Ascendant. Also, transiting Mars will be exactly opposite China's Moon, an exceptionally irritable combination. Watch for some diplomatic backlash when Mars turns direct right on China's Descendant on March 9.
