Mia Wasikowska and the Frumious Bandersnatch Print E-mail
Monday, 01 March 2010
In director Tim Burton's 3D gothic version of Alice in Wonderland, Alice is now 19 and looking to escape from her dreary Victorian surroundings. In Wonderland once again, she encounters the tyrannical Red Queen and brings out her Inner Joan-of-Arc to duel the evil Bandersnatch. Australian actress Mia Wasikowska plays Alice, and holds her own among superstars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway.

Mia Wasikowska was born with her Sun, Mercury and Mars in charming, polite Libra (October 14, 1989; Canberra, Australia; time unknown), where they square the epochal triple outer planet conjunction in Capricorn. The Germans call this late 1989 era the "Peaceful Revolution" because it coincided with the fall of the Berlin Wall. These three Capricorn planets are about breaking down old borders in order to reconstitute at a more universal level.

In the same way, Mia began her professional life as a ballet dancer but found the forms too confining. In the U.S. she first achieved critical acclaim for HBO's In Treatment, where she played a troubled teen. Her Mercury (mental attitude) is unbalanced by the square to quirky Uranus and authoritarian Saturn. She escapes via fantasy (Mercury square Neptune), which is a recurrent theme in her film roles.

With her Moon in bold Aries, Mia (and Alice) finds the courage to step out of her restrictive social milieu (Australia and Victorian England). Venus in Sagittarius gives her a playful side and a love of travel and adventure. With her Sun trine the North Node in Aquarius (near the U.S. Moon), Ms. Wasikowska will undoubtedly find much success in the States.

Obama and the Nuclear Energy Deal Print E-mail
Monday, 22 February 2010
For the first time since 1979, the United States will build nuclear reactors to help curb global warming, create jobs, and cut dependence on foreign oil. President Obama's announcement last week that the federal government would insure the projects' $8.3 billion cost was met with skepticism by many Democrats and environmentalists, but hailed as the right thing to do by most Republicans.

President Eisenhower kicked off the peaceful use of nuclear power when he signed the Atomic Energy Act (AEA) on August 30, 1954 (noon; Washington, D.C.). A horoscope for this event features the Sun in practical, service-oriented Virgo trine Mars in constructive Capricorn. The Moon in peace-loving Libra suggests Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" program, aimed at providing a useful counterpoint to the nuclear weapons arms race of that era.

Pluto, the ruler of the Scorpio Ascendant, is prominently located in the tenth house at 25º Leo, exactly opposite the U.S. Moon. This placement shows how atomic energy (Pluto) could transform American lives (Moon). The first nuclear power plant went online in Shippingport, Pennsylvania on December 2, 1957. At the time, transiting Pluto was nearly conjunct the AEA Sun and precisely trine the AEA Mars.

The Three Mile Island incident on March 28, 1979 ended (temporarily) nuclear reactor construction in the U.S. This nuclear meltdown unfolded as transiting Pluto was squaring the AEA Uranus, and transiting Uranus was squaring the AEA Pluto, a doubly disruptive combination that cast a pall over the entire industry. However, now that transiting Pluto has arrived on the AEA Mars, the time has arrived to begin again.

Top Five Astro-Events for March Print E-mail
Monday, 22 February 2010

1. Venus enters Aries on March 7 while making several aspects over the next few days, making this (March 7-11) a significant developmental phase in the relationship department. Romantic triangles, the testing of borders within relationships, and the beginning of new relationships are all possible. Aggressive women make their mark, while some may over-shoot.

2. Mars turns direct on the 10th, bringing a return of confidence to Leos, and improving the affairs of the house Leo occupies in your horoscope. Mars remains in Leo until June 7th, suggesting a good window to initiate action and new projects. Recreational activities, creative endeavors, and self-promotion are all favored.

3. Jupiter trines the U.S. Sun on the 14th, ushering in a wave of enthusiasm regarding the nation's affairs. This transit favors Obama, who may see a surge in his poll numbers, but other leaders may step forward now to show the way forward in these difficult times. Those who generate backbiting, dirty or attack-oriented politics fall out of favor.

4. The New Moon on March 15 is conjunct Mercury and Uranus, likely bringing an energetic new start for the coming lunar cycle. A significant political crisis may be in the news, as well as major accidents, explosions, and other sudden and unexpected developments. Also watch for exciting new discoveries, pharmaceutical deals, and announcements from religious or spiritual leaders.

5. The Vernal Equinox on March 20th takes place at 12:33 pm (EST). A horoscope for this moment sets the tone for the next three months, which includes national leadership leading through bipartisanship (Sun opposite Saturn in Libra), government taking on the role of the major provider (Sun square Ceres and Pluto in Capricorn). Ceres' position within these dynamic aspects indicates potential for major humanitarian disasters.
