Winter Solstice 2009 Print E-mail
Capricorn Winter Solstice IngressThis Capricorn Ingress brings us a mixed bag of celestial influences (what’s new?) to spice up our lives. While the stressful configurations of the last few Ingress charts have backed off for awhile, some of the other conditions I’ve mentioned are back in full force.

The T-Square of Uranus – Pluto – Saturn has gone away for the moment, although Pluto and Saturn are still square each other – and Pluto sits right on top of the Ingress Sun, so it’s not like all the pressure to change has gone away! But “simple” squares are generally easier to deal with than multi-planet configurations, so it could well feel like the heat’s off. But don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction, as Pluto will compel change whether or not we want it.

Saturn, in the early degrees of Libra, is asking us to take responsibility for our actions in our one-on-one relationships and partnerships, while our current self-awareness (Sun in Capricorn) is all about focusing on what we need to do to “succeed” – whatever that might mean to us individually. And there sits Pluto, bringer of change, on top of that Sun, both squaring Saturn. It seems that the chart is telling us to, yes, bring awareness of the need to take personal responsibility for how our relationships are going, but also to become aware that there’s a good chance that we need to change how we act in that area of our life. Pluto wants us to examine and evaluate what we have been doing and consider how we might change those habits for better results. It’s a question of our public life and career (Capricorn) at odds with our one-to-one relationships, and finding ways to bring them into a better balanced condition. And, as is Pluto’s normal method of operation, if we don’t do it ourselves, we’re liable to find ourselves in situations where we have no choice in the matter. (Did Tiger Woods miss this chance? While the conjunction with the Sun is recent, the Pluto – Saturn square has been effective for some time now.)

More themes of change.

While all this is going on, Jupiter and Neptune have gotten back together, with both of them in the same degree of Aquarius for the Ingress. And, at least for the Ingress, the Moon isn’t too far away, although moving off from this conjunction. Jupiter want to expand horizons, to take that journey to, well, anywhere other than here. He wants to grow and to amplify whatever he contacts.

Neptune wants to exaggerate these tendencies even more, but may not be very clear about how to do so. What, really does it mean to have an impulse to the “spiritual”? I do believe that that impulse in inherent in us, but I also believe that when misguided that impulse leads to religious wars and intolerance. (Said impulse need not be denominational or even “religious” in any form at all.) So, while Neptune wants to spiritualize, or otherwise uplift our attitudes, the impulse can also be deceptive.

With these two planets conjunct in Aquarius, their energy wants to express itself in broader social activities, those involving masses of people rather than individuals. I liken the Aquarian energy to the phrase “the greatest good for the greatest number” – and let’s hope you’re not an individual who wants to live out a style that doesn’t fit in! Likewise, Aquarius’ traditional ruler is Saturn, and so Aquarius can represent the “New Order” which must break from the past to be able to establish itself.

Mars sits roughly opposite this conjunction, but is currently retrograde, inhibiting any forward motion. He’ll be a “player” here for quite some time, substantially longer than he would normally be. Typically, Mars spends about 2 months in a Sign, and once in about every two years he’ll go retrograde. Usually he’ll back out of the Sign he was in when turning retrograde, spending some of the time going back over previous issues before turning direct. He doesn’t do that with this pass through Leo – indeed, he’ll spend over seven months in Leo, not leaving that Sign until early June of 2010!

So this energy to actually go out and do things is opposite (by Sign if not degree) the Ingress Jupiter-Neptune conjunction for the entire coming 6 months. And it’s focused in the Sign that wants to exalt the individual, opposite the Sign that wants to exalt the masses. How do we achieve higher goals for groups while still honoring the value and the rights of the individual? I can’t give any rules that might govern that, but it seems that we need to keep both ends of this in mind when we’re working on these issues. If we tend too much toward dismissing the individuals, then they will react adversely to what we’re trying to do. Yet if we deny the energy to uplift the mass we’re missing a golden opportunity to improve our situation, for, indeed, in many ways, we are part of that mass just as much as we are individuals.

As always, where this all plays out for us specifically depends on where these planets fall in our personal charts. Each House represents an area of life experience, and the House opposite represents a similar area of experience but on a different level. For example, the Second House represents your values and resources, and the Eighth House represents the values and resources of your partner. Look to see what House axis Jupiter – Neptune and Mars fall in, the Aquarius – Leo axis in your chart. Those two areas of life are where you are liable to find these issues coming into focus. There you will need to honor your individuality and still work to improve more general conditions around you.

The seeds we plant at the Capricorn Ingress will seemingly disappear, but will come to light at the Spring Equinox if we have sown well. It’s important to choose carefully what seeds we plant.
