The Obama Plan

Friday's unemployment figures confirm that the U.S. economy continues to contract at a pace not seen since the Great Depression. Last week President-elect Obama made the case for a staggering $800 billion stimulus package that would begin generating jobs by late summer. Over the weekend, Obama's economic advisers pieced together a preliminary memo so that Congress could begin tailoring the details.
As described in January's Astro-Event #2, Mercury turned retrograde on January 11 while squaring the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, which is a perfect celestial analog for the memo (Mercury) that will affect the nation's well-being (U.S. Ascendant). Critics have weighed in, saying that it's not enough or that it's too much, so over the next three weeks of Mercury's backwards motion, they will be making their cases.
Looking at the larger picture, transiting Pluto will make its first of five oppositions to the U.S. Venus on February 27. The Obama plan calls for a two-year government spending spree, which coincidentally, happens to conclude at the same time that transiting Pluto makes its final opposition to the U.S. Venus in late 2010. In the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope, Venus is in the 8th house of the national budget.
Pluto in connection with the money houses represents the potential for immense wealth and/or financial ruin. Since the nation's founding, transiting Pluto has not been in the U.S. 2nd house until it entered in 1998. Since then, we have collectively experienced two major booms and busts (dot-com and housing). What can we expect when transiting Pluto opposes the U.S. Jupiter beginning in 2011?
Obama's A-Team

As Obama assumes office, he's managed to unify the political left and right under what he calls his Team of Rivals: a cabinet of the strongest personalities and brightest minds available. Choosing competence over ideology has alienated party stalwarts, while some centrists are calling his cabinet the Dream Team and say they're well positioned to take on the nation's mounting crises.
Astrologically, the confluence of outer planets in Aquarius – Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune – emphasizes teamwork and the overcoming of personal differences for the sake of the larger whole. Obama's cabinet choices were completed as he went through his Jupiter Return, which underscores the opportunities available when working as a team. His semi-esoteric evocation of Abraham Lincoln arrives as transiting Neptune (mysticism) is conjunct Lincoln's Aquarius Sun.
With Obama's progressed Moon now conjunct his Aquarius Ascendant, he has become the networking president that he imagined. Although he's promised openness and transparency in his government, it's noteworthy that transiting Mars enters his 12th house of secrecy the day after his inauguration, and will remain there through the end of February. This indicates that the real action will be taking place behind the scenes, away from media scrutiny.
Transiting Mercury is also in his 12th house, and in retrograde motion. It's astrologically unlikely that any long-term, constructive changes can be made as long as Mercury and Mars are afflicting his 12th house. These conditions are better suited for political wrangling and backroom deals. No doubt Obama wants to hit the ground running, but it likely won't be until late February that anything practical can be accomplished.

February's Top Five Astro-Events
1. Saturn and Uranus oppose each other on February 5, which is the second of five oppositions between these two planets. This highly dynamic combination emphasizes innovation to overcome stagnation and corruption and/or following tried and true methods to offset wild or radical changes. The Saturn-Uranus tension can bring chaos and fractures to once reliable systems.
2. The Full Moon on February 9 features the Sun in Aquarius conjunct Chiron and Neptune, and spotlights the leaders who urge a healing of partisan wounds (Chiron) for the sake of the collective good (Neptune). With Mars and Jupiter also in Aquarius now, the emphasis on teamwork and group-think reaches a crescendo.
3. Mars conjunct Jupiter on February 17 is a highly energetic combination, urging vast collective projects. Since this conjunction activates the Solar Eclipse of August 1, 2008, one might expect the death or fall of a world leader or two. In special cases, a world leader may suddenly vault into prominence. The Mars-Jupiter conjunction opposes Obama's Leo Sun.
4. Uranus squaring the U.S. Mars on February 17 points to a dramatic increase in military tension wherever U.S. troops or American interests are located. Since this astro-event coincides with the Mars-Jupiter conjunction, expect a round of terrorism to unnerve the status quo, especially around February 14-17. A major U.S. city could experience crippling weather conditions or some other disaster.
5. Pluto opposes the U.S. Venus on February 27, indicating a peak in the banking and credit crisis. This historic, epochal transit creates a do-or-die financial climate, with the strongest corporations surviving and dominating their weaker competitors who must merge or go bankrupt. This is the first of five oppositions, so that the corporate weeding process is just beginning.
