Libra, September 22 to October 23
Libra glyph

  • Symbol: Scales
  • Element: Air
  • Quality: Cardinal
  • House: 7th, Relationships
  • Planet: Venus
  • Color: Blue
  • Body Part: Kidneys
  • Trait: Fair, Balanced
  • Semi-precious stone: Blue Lace Agate

Libra represents balance, peace, and harmony. Those born under the sign of the scales of justice want things to be fair.

Libra also represents beauty and grace; the Venus de Milo statue comes to mind. They tend to be cheerful, optimistic, and artisitic.

Relationships, romance, and cooperation are important to Libras. Speaking in a crude or unrefined way may be a turn-off to someone with strong Libra influence in her or his natal chart.

An out-of-balance Libra may have problems making decisions or communicating what needs to be said in a relationship. Many learn that living under the false belief that "peace at all costs" or "don't rock the boat" will help them find harmony. They find out that speaking their truth sooner, even though it will rock the boat, creates greater harmony in the long run.

Libras can also have trouble with indecisiveness, since both sides of an argument frequently seem perfectly reasonable to them.

It is interesting to note that many great military leaders, like Dwight Eisenhower, were in the peacekeeping sign of Libra.

Libra rules the kidneys, adrenal glands, cosmetics, fashion, marriage, divorce, clear air, fine arts, and weddings.

Venus

Venus glyphVenus is the ruling planet of Taurus and Libra. Venus was the Greek goddess of love and beauty, also representing the feminine and fertility.

Because it's the brightest object in the sky except for the Sun and Moon, Venus was known even in prehistoric times.

Venus rules love, relationships, cultural activities, art, luxury items, and beauty. Jewelry generally falls under her rulership. The importance of material possessions is associated with Venus.

The house placement of Venus in your chart indicates where you express beauty and peace. In the fourth house, you may decorate your house in a beautiful way. In the twelfth house, you may value the peace and harmony of your privacy, keeping your desires a secret. In the seventh house, marriage partnerships may be a high priority.

The natal placement of Venus provides hints as to what you value and how you go about manifesting your desires. In the sign Taurus, you may own items that are high in value yet sensible. In Leo, you may prefer highly passionate relationships, or clothing that is royally luxurious.

Physically, Venus governs the throat, kidneys, and diabetes.

Venus' rotation is somewhat unusual in that it is both very slow (243 Earth days = 1 Venus day) and retrograde. In addition, the periods of Venus' rotation and of its orbit are synchronized such that it always presents the same face toward Earth when the two planets are at their closest approach. Whether this is a resonance effect or merely a coincidence is not known.

The Seventh House, Relationships

The Seventh House, ruled by Libra, relates to relationships of both a business and personal nature. The Seventh House determines your experiences with marriage and partnership. Ironically, this area that represents your marriage also holds your open enemies.

On a spiritual growth level, the people with whom you share, whether in love, business, or war, are all here to help you open to a greater level of your spirit. An enemy can perhaps be viewed as a soul who has agreed to help you grow, much the same as a marriage partner.

People want different things in a marriage, and the sign on your Descendant (the name for the 7th house cusp) describes your desires. An Aries Descendant may like fiery passion in a marriage partner, while an Aquarius cusp may need someone who is as much a friend as a partner.

Planets in the seventh house greatly influence the needs of committed partnership. The Moon in the seventh house, for example, may show a strong need for emotional connection, or indicate that the desire for partnership may ebb and flow. If you have Saturn in the 7th house, you probably experience rocky relationships, and do well with a mature partner.

The main point of the seventh house is that you are being called to step away from purely self-serving needs in order to share and cooperate with others. The seventh house is what calls you outside yourself.

Sarah Palin as McCain's Veep
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was born with her Aquarius Sun (February 11, 1964; Sandpoint, ID; time unknown) conjunct Mars and Saturn, an ambitious combination that is always testing its limits, trying to get as much as possible from any situation. Mars-Saturn combinations often manifest as being extra assertive, as the individual struggles to overcome challenging forces. As Governor, Palin has proven enormously popular for taking on corruption in Alaskan politics.

Transiting Neptune is the major influence in her horoscope over the next few months since it's conjunct her Sun. While she most likely will find this phase disorienting due to the intense learning curve of being on McCain's ticket, Neptune here also makes her a big unknown as seen from the outside. She will be associated with many of Neptune's symbols, especially faith, oil, scandals, and the Cinderella factor.

Palin's Venus in Aries is a prominent player in her horoscope. In 1984 she came in second in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant (as her progressed Venus was sextile Saturn), when she was also awarded Miss Congeniality. Palin's Venus forms a close trine to her Juno-Pallas conjunction in Sagittarius, giving her diplomatic, people-pleasing resources – so that she fights hard but politely or with civility.

Palin's progressed Mars is now at 28º Pisces, and is being activated over the next two months by transiting Pluto. This celestial set-up is extremely competitive, and exactly analogous to what's happening in Joe Biden's horoscope (see last week's NewsScope ). With her natal Saturn at 25º Aquarius - precisely conjunct the U.S. Moon – Palin will undoubtedly make a solid connection with many American voters, and especially women.

It's Mercury Retrograde Time in September and October
by Guest astrologer: Alicia Katz Pollock

This September, the inner planets Venus, Mars and Mercury travel together in Libra, inspiring positive social connection. Jupiter in Capricorn trines with Saturn in Virgo, and is considered a strong, fortuitous foundation.
While Mercury is retrograde from Sept. 24 to Oct. 15, avoid any heavy conversations about your relationship, as communicating accurately and for the highest good will be challenging.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)
You're going to find it tough to delegate right now. Are you guiding those around you to a higher goal, or are you trying to force others to adopt to your own views of how to get it done? In other words, it's not them, it's you. The best thing you can do is to give the other person your full commitment and loyalty, and you'll get the results you're after. Reflection and behind-the-scenes activity will help you strike a balance.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Time to chill out. You can quit wondering if people think you're pretty, or if they like you. They don't. Just kidding! In fact, they think you're beautiful inside and out, and they're glad to have you in their lives. It's your own insecurities that are keeping you from really seeing that about yourself. The finger of God is going to point to you in mid-September, and you'll have some indisputable proof. If you can fall in love with yourself, in October when someone heaven-sent turns their attention your way, you'll be able to let your defenses down.

Gemini (May 21 - June 2)

Gather as much information as you can about an emotional situation and help people talk about what they are feeling. This is a time for you to listen to what everyone else is saying and feeling, and to shift your attention away from yourself. Your opinion doesn't matter right now! You may feel like you're compromising yourself by not speaking, but your contribution will be for the highest good. In fact, as you successfully help those around you share their insights, you'll grow and evolve.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22)
Right now you need to nurture and be nurtured, and to safely and freely express your emotions. If you have scars that have never healed, you've got people around you to support you. However, the key word here is "safely." You are not free to unload your pain on anyone, and especially not to be passive/aggressive. Life isn't fair. This is a time for integrity, honesty and mature judgment. Once you let go of this baggage, your relationships with your loved ones will no longer be a struggle between your head and your heart.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)
In September, your feelings of alienation and isolation will cause you to want to make a commitment, but reflect deeply before you act. Be careful not to over-express your emotions - you may actually cause drama where there needn't be any! Your passion for what's possible can cause you to not see the situation for what it is: a normal natural cycle that ebbs and flows. Use sound ethics and maintain your dignity as you proceed. Ironically, at the end of October you may find yourself in the opposite situation, looking for breathing room.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
In September, Uranus in Pisces will oppose your Sun conjunct Saturn, so a storm is coming. If you haven't yet learned your lessons in living, look out for lightning strikes that will in turn split your life into pieces and force you to grow and change. If you have already been working on getting your life in order, then you're going to see a rainbow now that your storm is ending. An issue to pay special attention to: Do you always have to be right? Equality, compromise and appreciation will go a long way toward deepening your relationships.

Libra (September 23 - October 23)
The first few weeks of September will be the perfect time to gab, scheme and dream with your best buddies. Commiserate, solve each other's problems, bask in the love of your friends. Let those conversations steep like a warm cup of tea in your hand for a few weeks until October's Mercury retrograde is over, though - if you wait patiently until you've become infused with your ponderings before sharing your plan, you'll be able to present a refined, articulate proposal that will inspire those around you.

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22)
Have you seen the Austin Powers movies? Every time he says, "Do I make you horny, baby?" and grins with those awful teeth, I simultaneously cringe and crack up: how can a man so out of touch be such a powerful object of desire? Your autumn will be kind of like that - you're looking for someone to slather, but you may misread the situation, or your passion will turn off the fireworks instead of igniting them. And getting jealous won't help things, even if the pathos is fun.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21)
Pluto has been in Sag since 1995, and it finally will leave you alone this November. But on its way out, it will knock you around just a bit more. Pay close attention to detail and have an open heart during this last opportunity to learn and grow. On September 19 and October 16 you'll actually experience moments of complete inner peace and stability. Savor those epiphanies and carry those experiences with you.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20)
Although you're usually most comfortable behind the scenes, the second week in September brings you an unusually auspicious opportunity to bestow your talents to help a cause succeed. Volunteer your time. Offer your advice. Bring stability to a chaotic situation. While you'll have to let yourself be noticed, bask in the appreciation because you will really make a difference during an important time.

Aquarius (January 21 - February 19)
Normally you cherish your eccentricity, but this autumn you find yourself affecting aloofness when you'd rather get to know others better. Be yourself - your creative spark is not only inspirational, but will help you break through your habit of feeling alienated. At the end of October, clear the air with your mother - if you're carrying baggage from your childhood that's keeping you from being authentic with people, this is the perfect time to let go and escape your limits. In addition, take on two daily actions, one for your health and one for the environment.

Pisces (February 20 - March 20)
Uranus in Pisces continues to be an overwhelming healing influence in your life. The winds of change continue to blow, and you have years to go. Change is what you make it, and every problem is an opportunity. This season these changes will directly influence your relationships, so bring intention and dignity to your own transformation.

David Ockrassa's Ingress Report: Fall Equinox 2008
This year’s Autumn Equinox (one of the two times a year when you can balance a raw egg on end!) is on Sept. 22nd, at 11:44 Am EDT, 8:44 AM PDT. For those of us on the West Coast, we’ll see Libra rising, with Mars, Mercury and Venus all in Libra in the 1st house, and the Sun, of course at 00 Libra, back in the 12th. So for us, the Summer Solstice issues of relationships will still be a dominant theme. For the nation as a whole, looking at the chart set for Washington, DC, Scorpio rises, placing the Sun in the 10th House, and the other 3 in the 11th, highlighting relations with groups rather than the personal level suggested by the 1st House positions.

Now, Libra is always concerned with relationships, with balance and equality, and Mercury and Venus can never be far from the Sun, so having them in Libra isn’t too out of the ordinary. Mars moves a bit slower, and not being between the Earth and the Sun, isn’t held to within one or two signs (Mercury and Venus, respectively) of the Sun, so his being in the mix does spice it up a bit. Mars, of course, represents our ability to take action, so perhaps the themes we’ve been mulling over for the last three months are ripe for action. Perhaps. But perhaps, since Mars is making a trine to Neptune, just perhaps we might want to hesitate a bit longer. Neptune can provide an element of confusion, deception (self or otherwise!) and fog to everything he touches. Of course, Neptune can also provide a sense of the uplifting and spiritual, but it is often very hard to discriminate between what are valid dreams to pursue, and what are “pipe dreams.” That Mercury is almost ready to turn retrograde might make it even more difficult at this time, so more introspection and reevaluation seems to be in order. Wait about a month, if possible, before jumping off in new directions.

All of this happens with a background influence of Saturn opposite Uranus, providing tension between the old and the new, at least in modern parlance. So we’re tasked with understanding, and, ultimately, acting on, a need for change and alteration in our established structures (Saturn) precipitated by an underlying desire to break from those structures (Uranus). Uranus sits in Pisces, so Neptune’s influence shows up again, and our dreams of a “better” condition may be prominent in our thoughts. Indeed, later in the season Saturn will make a stressful aspect to Neptune, one that will push us to reconsider – and perhaps alter – those dreams. Another message to not take precipitate action at this time, as what we now think we want may well change in the not too distant future. (Which makes me think of the “October Surprise” now infamous in US politics, where something will “happen” and then be spun – at least as it has in the last few election cycles – to make us reconsider how we might vote. This kind of occurrence should be viewed high on the list of Neptunian fog.)

Jupiter sits between Saturn and Uranus, currently trine Saturn, and a bit wide of – but closing in on – the sextile to Uranus. So there is a bit of optimism and positive energy available here. While Jupiter is often an indicator of good things, my experience of this planet is more along the lines of “more.” So, in this easy aspect to Saturn, he could represent more awareness of the structures we’re struggling against – probably not a comfortable feeling, but, if we’re serious about making changes, beneficial. Unless we can get really clear about what needs to be changed, our ability to cut through Neptune’s fog is diminished.

And of course all this happens as well with the background of the impending national election, where we express what we want our relationship to be with our government. Do we dream of equality, or of Big Brother taking care of us? Do we believe the spin from all camps, or do we try to dig below that to the facts? Do we buy into the “polls” – which seemed to be wrong through the entire primary season?

Or do we take to heart the warnings about delaying action until we’ve had more time to come to grips with the issues of dreams versus pipe dreams? Do we take the time for introspection, for fact gathering, and for getting beyond the deceptive / self-deceptive side of Neptune and only take action when we’re clear within ourselves on the higher side, on the side of the dreams that speak to Libran equality and fairness?

Our choice.

NewsScope by WolfStar: Top Five Astro-Events for September
1. Pluto turns direct on September 8, the day after Jupiter turns direct. Pluto's stations often correspond to calamitous disasters somewhere on planet earth, whether caused by humans or Mother Nature. After the 8th, Pluto makes a beeline for Capricorn, where it will remain through 2024, as it unleashes forces that transform governments, corporations, and institutions.

2. Jupiter trines Saturn on September 8, and is exceptionally favorable for business developments and professional advancement. This aspect is a major influence all month, but is strongest from the 3rd through the 9th when the Sun aligns with Saturn and Jupiter turns direct. This phase brings an optimal time to be practical about financial matters.

3. Mercury in Libra all month leads to major discussions about relationships, alliances, and romantic triangles, since a concurrent Venus-Mars conjunction on the 9th spices everything up. Mercury's conjunction with Mars on the 9th and 22nd may lead to heated discussions and some action which will have to be re-worked after Mercury turns retrograde on the 24th.

4. Ceres opposes Chiron on the 28th, an aspect that normally passes under the radar. However, this becomes an event-oriented combination since it's perfectly aligned with the U.S. Midheaven. All Ceres-related issues come to the foreground, including health care, abortion, food safety, and improving America's wounded image on the international stage. This pairing may be a signature for a domestic disaster.

5. Mars squares the US Pluto on September 30, but is an effective influence from the 21st through the 30th. This intensely militant and hostile vibe leads to inappropriate or disastrous operations (with Mars in the U.S. 12th house). Expect increased terrorist activity, an inability to take decisive action, and politicians doing and saying outrageous things they later regret.

And For Those of You Who Have Read This Far
How You Drive Saves Gas

Do you move your foot from gas to brake to gas to brake while you drive? If so, each switch costs you money! Jackrabbit starts and hard brake stops reduce travel time by only about 4 percent -- that's only 75 seconds on a 30-minute trip.

You can increase your gas milage up to 25% simply by changing your driving habits. It does mean driving like your grandmother, but if you use these tips you'll put money in your pocket AND reduce our need for Middle Eastern oil imports by half (Mother Jones ). Not to mention decreasing global warming!

I've become very conscious of my driving habits, and as a result see all the other cars wasting tons of gas! Braking, accelerating, and idling are all unnecessary wastes of gas.
1) Try to maintain one speed. Traffic lights are timed so that if you go the speed limit, you'll hit a string of greens. Instead of going fast and then having to slow down when you come up on the car behind you, accelerate enough to get going and maintain that speed. You'll find you'll rarely speed up and slow down, even as all the other cars do around you.
2) If the traffic light ahead of you is red (or has been green for awhile), take your foot off the gas and coast to the light. Either you'll arrive just in time for the light to turn green again without braking at all, or you'll only have to sit at the light for a few seconds.
3) In a parking lot, find a spot at the highest elevation so you can roll out later. Even better, find a spot without a car or barrier in front of you so that you can just roll forward to leave - backing out, braking, and going forward again use gas. If you have to park a few rows further to get a spot without being nose-to-nose, it's worth it - the extra walk will do you good too!
4) We throw gas away when we accelerate fast, turn on the air conditioning, leave heavy stuff in the trunk, drive with a roof rack, don't change the oil, underinflate our tires, roll down the windows, and when we speed.
