Ceres and Global Warming

Over the coming week transiting Uranus is heading toward a conjunction with the U.S. Ceres (located at 8º41). On January 23 this aspect becomes exact, completing the third such passage over the last year. All things related to Ceres enter the spotlight, and to better anticipate what to expect, the astrologer looks at the historical record.

On the geopolitical level, Ceres represents relief efforts, grief over the loss of cherished leaders, and life-and-death issues. Last year, transiting Uranus made its first conjunction with Ceres on April 1, a time which featured the deaths of Terri Schiavo and John Paul II. Also, a major relief effort was underway for the tsunami victims. The second passage of Uranus to the U.S. Ceres on September 3 corresponded to Hurricane Katrina and the chaotic relief efforts in New Orleans.

Some of the manifestations of this third transit are already apparent. Much of the grilling of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito was aimed at his stance on abortion and whether he will try to weaken Roe v. Wade. We've also seen relief efforts and grieving over the West Virginia coal mine disaster – which took place when the Moon entered Pisces and conjoined transiting Uranus as it was approaching the U.S. Ceres.

As a harbinger for natural disasters, the activation of Ceres may bring some alarming weather conditions this week. Global warming has contributed to record-setting rainfall in the Pacific Northwest, while in the Southeast, some rare tornadoes wreaked havoc. Last year's record hurricane season arrived with relatively little outer planet stresses. As this year's Jupiter-Saturn-Neptune T-square unfolds, the astrologer suspects that the severity of weird weather systems is just beginning.

Alito and the Age of Aquarius

A NewsScope reader expressed concerns about individual rights should Samuel Alito be confirmed to the Supreme Court. "I would like to hear your take on what is going on since this issue is so central to what direction the country takes in the next 30 years. The talk about executive power grabs... the spying on American citizens.... Where is the Constitution and Bill of Rights in all this?"

As Ray Grasse so eloquently stated in his visionary book Signs of the Times, the issue of individual rights v. the needs of the collective is a primary dilemma associated with the Age of Aquarius. That the conflict is arising now is a sure indicator that the Age of Aquarius is upon us, and the current transits reflect this message.

Neptune in Aquarius has just entered the U.S. fourth house of domestic concerns. Neptune idealizes the Aquarian values of democracy, freedom of expression, and equal treatment under the law. Americans in general have always treasured and protected these values since the U.S. Moon is in Aquarius. This past week transiting Pluto was exactly sextile the U.S. Moon, empowering the people in this particular case.

The Age of Aquarius, according to Grasse, also features the elemental values of Leo, the polar opposite of Aquarius. The U.S. with its Leo Midheaven encourages individual success, promotes talent and creativity, and treats its celebrities like deities. Saturn in Leo now gives authority to the government to do what it has to do while engaged in the War on Terrorism.

In 2006 Saturn and Neptune oppose each other while aligned with the U.S. Midheaven. This celestial showdown pits the government's national security needs against traditional American values regarding civil rights. Ideally, the opposing parties can find a way that safeguards what both sides need. But the issue won't go away, since the War on Terrorism will likely be with us for the next 30 years*. The advent of the Age of Aquarius seems more disturbing than dreamers had hoped.

Angelina Jolie, Pregnant

"Yes, I'm pregnant," Angelina Jolie admitted last week. She broke the news in the Dominican Republic, where she's filming The Good Shepherd with Matt Damon. Later in the week, father-to-be Brad Pitt accompanied Angelina to Haiti on a good-will mission. A month ago, the couple filed papers to make Pitt the legal father of Jolie's two adopted children, Zaharia and Maddox.

Angelina Jolie was born (June 4, 1975; 9:09 am; Los Angeles) with maternalistic Ceres** in her tenth house, a placement which until now has fulfilled itself through adoption. With Venus Rising, Angelina is rightfully identified as the Goddess of Beauty. This Venus squares Uranus, electrifying her overall aura, but the stressful aspect also makes committed relationships difficult.

Over the last three months, transiting Mars was in a prolonged conjunction with her Ceres (as the progressed Sun was sextile). Mars came in the form of Brad Pitt (December 18, 1963; 6:31 am; Shawnee, OK), who is currently experiencing the life-changing transit of Pluto across his Sagittarius Sun. With four planets in paternalistic Capricorn, Brad has always been interested in parenting.

Angelina's progressed Venus is now in a harmonious place (trine Chiron, sextile Uranus), giving her a window to secure a stable and fascinating relationship. However, Angelina's Mars at 10º Aries forms an exact square to Brad's Mars at 10º Capricorn, making this degree area highly volatile for the twosome. Watch for dramatic developments when transiting Uranus hits this degree zone during the second half of February.

* The U.S. progressed Midheaven recently entered Aries, and remains in this sign for the next 27 years, during which time progressed Mars remains in the 12th house of secret enemies. See NewsScope November 22, 2005 for more on Alito's nomination, and especially December 6, 2005 regarding Roe v. Wade.

** see NewsScope July 26, 2005 for more on Angelina's Ceres, and Dec 16, 2003 for the first report of their romance.
