Saddam Faces his Accusers

Last Monday Iraqi citizens watched, via streaming video, Saddam 's dramatic confrontation with the presiding judge. The trial takes place during a powerful insurgency largely waged by Saddam's supporters, and continues despite the murder of two defense lawyers. The Iraqi High Tribunal is funded and protected by the United States, so this case is very much about the U.S. versus Saddam Hussein.

Saddam Hussein was born with a Sun-Uranus conjunction in Taurus (April 28, 1937; 8:06 am; Tikrit, Iraq*), a planetary duo found exactly on the U.S. Descendant, which marks the house of "open enemies". Naturally, of all the world's dictators, this one is the perfect shadow for American hostility and aggression. Last week the trial proceedings began as transiting Mars hit Saddam's Sun-Uranus and the U.S. Descendant.

The old maxim, "planets are people" rings true here, since at the same time transiting Jupiter – the planet of legal proceedings and justice – is now transiting across the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. As Mars and Jupiter oppose each other in the sky, Saddam and the U.S. oppose each other on the world stage. This event is extraordinarily powerful since Mars turns direct (December 10) while involved in this showdown.

On Sunday (December 4) transiting Mercury turned direct while exactly opposite Saddam's Mercury, found in the secretive 12th house, and the ruler of his Gemini Rising horoscope. This is when veiled accusers begin describing the skeletons in his closet. Although the trial will once again likely be delayed after a few days, Mars on Saddam's Sun-Uranus indicates that his local supporters and enemies will be fighting hard to disrupt the proceedings.

Alito and Roe v. Wade

A recently released Reagan memo detailing Samuel Alito's strategy for weakening Roe v. Wade is intensifying Democratic opposition to his Supreme Court nomination. Roe v. Wade – the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision – reshaped American politics by dividing the nation into "pro-life" and "pro-choice" camps. If Alito is confirmed, will the increasingly conservative bench overturn the ruling that gave women the right to choose?

A horoscope can be set for the moment the Roe v. Wade decision was released on January 22, 1973 (10:00 am; Washington D.C.*). The Sun in egalitarian Aquarius is empowered by a trine to Pluto in Libra (gender balance), and another trine to Vesta in Gemini (sisterhood). The Sun has no major afflictions, giving the decision a prominent and clear place in history.

However, Mars and Saturn oppose each other in the third and ninth houses, stressing the differences of opinion (third house) and religious issues (ninth house) that Roe v. Wade encompasses. The closest aspect in this horoscope is Venus square Chiron, with both of them precisely aligned with the U.S. Sun. This configuration symbolizes this nationally important (U.S. Sun) women's issue (Venus) and all the associated pain and healing (Chiron).

Samuel Alito (April 1, 1950; Trenton, NJ; time unknown) has his Aries Sun conjunct the Roe v. Wade Chiron. This combination underscores how connected he is to this decision, and how much his nomination will awaken old wounds. If he is confirmed, watch in early 2007 when transiting Pluto squares his Mars and nears the Roe v. Wade Midheaven** for the key court case that will undermine the original decision.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin: "Don't Be Evil"

Now that Google's stock price has soared to over $400/share, founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are counted among the world's richest entrepreneurs, with each worth about $11 billion. Still, they live modestly and have high moral standards. Each drives the environmentally friendly Prius, and emphasize Google's game plan (to create a better world) with the slogan "Don't Be Evil."

Larry Page was born with his Sun conjunct peace-loving Venus in the pioneering sign of Aries (March 26, 1973; Ann Arbor, Michigan; time unknown). The closest aspect in his chart is Venus opposite Pluto, which by itself can bring extremely negative feelings, including greed, jealousy, and manipulative power struggles. However, with the many favorable aspects to Venus, the individual becomes easy-going, while evil is projected onto surrounding conditions and personalities.

Venus-Pluto aspects are found everywhere in the Google empire. Five months after Page was born, Sergey Brin entered the world (August 21, 1973; Moscow, Russia; time unknown), as Venus and Pluto were exactly conjunct. Brin's Venus is likewise softened by favorable aspects to Jupiter and Neptune, but given a no-nonsense, hard edge with a square to Saturn.

Google's original commercial start-up (September 7, 1998; Menlo Park, CA; time unknown) features Venus square Pluto. Google's first public offering (August 19, 2004) has the Leo Sun trine Pluto and octile Venus. In the business world Venus-Pluto aspects know how to maximize value, while in the world of ethics, Venus-Pluto knows the power of love. In three years Brin's progressed Sun will conjoin his Venus-Pluto, marking a major turning point in their partnership, and in Google's business plan.

* birth time is rectified by the author; for more info, see NewsScope December 15, 2003; March 31, 2003. Advanced astrologers who wish to verify this rectified time will notice that Saddam's Descendant is 23º Sagittarius, which is where transiting Pluto is right now. Saddam was captured when his progressed Midheaven was conjunct his Sun. Now, as the trial proceeds, his progressed Midheaven is conjunct natal Uranus.

** The Planned Parenthood decision on June 29, 1992 was the closest that Roe v. Wade came to being overturned, as progressed Mars at 29º Sagittarius was conjunct the Roe v. Wade Midheaven. For more on this case, see here.
