John Roberts, Supreme Court Nominee
John Roberts, President Bush's Supreme Court nominee, was making
choreographed visits around Washington last week, and by most
accounts, his charm offensive was going well. Many Senators were
pondering his emphasis on "modesty" and "stability" for
clues about how he would rule, while others held open the possibility
of filibustering until his views on Roe v. Wade are better understood.
John Roberts was born with
his Sun in Aquarius, the
sign of freedom, brotherhood,
and equality (January 27,
1955; Buffalo, NY; time
unknown). His Sun is exactly
conjunct the U.S. South
Node, a connection shared
by many American movers
and shakers, including
President William McKinley,
General Douglas MacArthur,
and actor Paul Newman.
Americans tend to like
Aquarians for their independence
and lofty idealism.
Roberts' Mercury is exalted
in Aquarius, and has an
extraordinary network of
tight aspects to all the
outer planets which strengthen
and challenge his mental
focus. Roberts' Mercury,
the natural ruler of opinions
and thought processes,
is celestially designed
to shape the people's sense
of right and wrong, by
virtue of its exact conjunction
with the U.S. Moon.
Transiting Saturn is heading
for an opposition to Roberts'
Sun, and will be exact
in September, when he can
expect that his judicial
record and opinions will
become intensely questioned
in the Senate hearings.
The issue of abortion is
astrologically associated
with the asteroid Ceres,
especially when aligned
with Pluto. Assuming he
will be confirmed, transiting
Pluto will be conjunct
Roberts' Ceres in 2007-2008,
by which time he may become
the swing vote when the
Supreme Court re-visits
Roe v. Wade.
Mars-Pluto over the UK
Last week terrorists hit
London again following the devastating July 7 attack in the
subway system that killed 57 innocent bystanders. Meanwhile,
the country's 1.6 million Muslims, already alarmed by Scotland
Yard's shoot-to-kill policy, went into collective shock after
policemen pumped bullets into an Islamic suspect* who was later
cleared of any wrongdoing.
The current wave of troubles
can be tracked using the
United Kingdom's national
horoscope, set for January
1, 1801 (0:00 LMT; London).
The military strength of
the British Empire can
be seen in the Capricorn
Sun's close trine to Mars
in Taurus. Naturally, any
bombing or wave of violence
will be associated with
challenging transits or
progressions to the UK
Mars.
On July 7, the date of
the London subway attack,
transiting Mercury and
Venus were exactly squaring
the UK Mars. These fast-moving
transits would generally
pass by Mars without much
damage, except that a major
Mars progression is also
coming into play. The UK
progressed Mars recently
entered Virgo, and over
the next three years will
be heading into an opposition
to natal Pluto, an extremely
violent astrological combination.
During this time, any fast-moving
transit that afflicts the
UK chart could trigger
a violent episode.
Pluto forms a quincunx
(150º aspect) to Jupiter
in the UK's tenth house
of government. Jupiter,
in the royal sign of Leo,
is currently being awakened
to its responsibilities
by a conjunction from transiting
Saturn (as well as the
UK's progressed Sun). Under
this influence, we might
expect that Tony Blair
will assume some global
leadership role in combating
Islamic extremism.
Angelina Jolie and Zahara
As
one of the most beautiful, talented, and eccentric women in the
world, Angelina Jolie can have just about anything she wants. Last
month, she took what no one else wanted – a baby Ethiopian
girl named Zahara whose mother had just died of AIDS. Zahara joined
Jolie's 3-year-old son Maddox, and the three flew to California
to stay at Brad Pitt's Malibu estate.
Angelina Jolie was born with
Venus Rising (June 4, 1975;
9:09 am; Los Angeles), a fortunate
celestial placement that has
bestowed her with beauty, wealth
and the admiration of millions
of fans. Her Venus squares
Uranus, adding elements of
eroticism and electricity,
but also making long-term romantic
relationships uncomfortable.
The Venus-Uranus aspect elevates
her rebellious side, which
is underscored by her Moon
and Mars in Aries square Saturn.
This anti-authoritarian vibe
ruled her life until her Ceres
was activated. Ceres, the asteroid
governing the parent-child
relationship, is found in her
tenth house of public standing,
and is placed in stable Taurus.
Jolie unexpectedly found a
higher purpose in her life
when her progressed Midheaven
formed a conjunction with Ceres
in mid-2000.
This is when she read the film
script "Beyond Borders" which
highlighted the plight of Cambodian
refugees. Soon after, she adopted
her Cambodian son Maddox. Last
month, Jolie's progressed Sun
was exactly sextile her Ceres,
as once again she took in an
abandoned child. With natal
Uranus in her fourth house
of home, Jolie has had her
problems with her father, actor
Jon Voight. But Uranus here,
in its highest expression,
is the global citizen.
* Note that when the suspect
was killed, transiting Mercury
was turning retrograde at 20º Leo,
exactly conjunct the UK's progressed
Mercury, and with both squaring
misguided Neptune.
