FBI Under Siege

Last Thursday was FBI Director Louis Freeh's last official day on the job,
and ends a troubled tenure punctuated with a string of mishaps. The most
recent snafus, the discovery of Russian spy Robert Hannsen in February and
the "lost" 3000 pages of evidence in the Timothy McVeigh case, have led
Attorney General Ashcroft to begin a comprehensive review of the agency,
aiming at major reforms.

The FBI was first organized by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte on July 26,
1908 (set for noon, Washington DC). With its Sun, Mars, and Jupiter in proud
Leo, the FBI gained a reputation for being the best criminal investigation
organization in the world, but was also susceptible to the Leo influence of
arrogance and imperialism. The strong links to the U.S. horoscope indicate
the prominent, historical role this agency would play in the nation's
development.

Pluto, the natural ruler of criminal investigation, is exactly trine to the
U.S. Moon, showing a generally favorable public opinion. The FBI's Venus and
the North Node are also very favorably aligned with the U.S. Jupiter,
indicating a sizeable operating budget. However, the FBI's troublesome
Mercury-Neptune conjunction opposite Uranus is the source for much conflict.
These planets (aligned with the U.S. Sun) are periodically activated during
major crises and transitions.

J. Edgar Hoover took over the FBI on May 2, 1924 as transiting Pluto was
conjunct the FBI Mercury. The Ruby Ridge incident occurred on August 21, 1992
during the FBI's Uranus Return and began a series of missteps and blunders.
Now, as transiting Pluto is inconjunct the FBI Mercury, the FBI itself has
become the subject of an investigation.

Mercury Tests Peace Agreements

Mercury has been retrograde for nearly three weeks, and officially turns
direct on June 28 at 1:49 am EDT (June 27, 10:49 pm PDT). Mercury's backward
cycle has been unusually difficult since the fastest planet is in the company
of some tense planetary dynamics. Mercury rules agreements and documents, and
its current position has been most unsettling to tenuous peace treaties.

At the moment Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn are all in Gemini while Mars,
Chiron, and Pluto are in the opposite sign Sagittarius. The faster moving
planets can trigger the underlying tensions between the slower-moving outer
planets. Fortunately, Mercury doesn't quite make it to an exact opposition to
Mars before it turns direct, but it has been close enough to create an
extremely hostile political environment.

In the Middle East, Macedonia, and Ireland negotiated peace agreements have
fallen apart during Mercury's closest passage opposite Mars. These and other
global hotspots are astrologically bound to intensify under the escalating
celestial conflict between Saturn and Pluto. The turning points and aspects
to these outer planets from Mercury and Mars mark the most significant events.

Mercury turns direct just as Secretary of State Colin Powell is visiting the
Middle East. Mercury happens to be right on the U.S. Mars as it turns direct,
giving the Mars-ruled General Powell an opportunity to set aright the
deteriorating arrangement. This aspect can also be interpreted as being
highly dangerous, and the Secretary and other Americans living and working
abroad should be on full alert.

Kennewick Man: Who Controls the Past?

Anthropologists and Native Americans are warring over an ancient skeleton
known as Kennewick Man. Radiocarbon dating suggests the bones, found along
the Columbia River during a hydroplane race, are about 9,500 years old. They
belong to an individual with distinct Caucasian features, and do not resemble
those of the surrounding tribal nations.

Kennewick Man was discovered, or reborn, in the dramatic sign of Leo (July
28, 1996; Kennewick, WA; about 3:00 pm*). The Sun opposite Uranus describes
the paradigm-busting conflict that has been experienced ever since the
discovery. The Sun is trine to Pluto near the Ascendant, perhaps reflecting
the dynamic rebirth, and both the Sun and Pluto are trine to Saturn in Aries.
This Fire Grand Trine suggests fame, power, strength, and transformative
creative forces inherent in what the local Indians call "The Ancient One."

This horoscope also features a tense Grand Cross between Mars, Saturn,
Jupiter, and Chiron. Anthropologists are grasping for a reasonable
explanation of how a man most closely resembling the Ainu of Japan, or
Polynesians of the South Pacific found his way to the Pacific Northwest
nearly 10,000 years ago, and are asking the court for further DNA evidence.
The Umatilla Indians want the bones buried so as not to disturb the
ancestors' spirits.

A plaster reconstruction of Kennewick Man's face shows he bears an uncanny
resemblance to Star Trek's Patrick Stewart (July 13, 1940). Astrologers would
not be surprised by this connection since Stewart's bold Mercury-Mars-Pluto
triple conjunction is exactly aligned with Kennewick Man's Sun-Uranus. Did
Captain Picard get lost in a time warp?
