Zarqawi and the Golden Mosque

Just before 7 am last Wednesday, the Golden Mosque in Samara – the Shia's holiest shrine in Iraq – was reduced to rubble by a terrorist's bomb. The threat of full-scale civil war loomed as Sunni leaders suspended talks with Shia and Kurdish politicians on forming a new government. The U.S. State Department pinned the incident on Abu Musab Zarqawi, the nominal Al Qaeda leader in Iraq.

Zarqawi's horoscope (October 30, 1966; Zarqa, Jordan; time unknown) reveals that he may very well have been behind the audacious attack. His Sun-Venus conjunction in Scorpio gives him popular and financial support, while the Sun's square to Jupiter in regal Leo adds an element of supreme self-righteousness. Transiting Saturn is in Leo now, activating this configuration, and fueling his ambition.

Zarqawi's Sun is also sextile Mars in Virgo, which is often associated with military service. This Mars is further empowered by a wide conjunction with Pluto. On the day of the bombing, transiting Uranus in faith-oriented Pisces was exactly opposite Zarqawi's Mars. To a jihadist like Zarqawi, Uranus to Mars gives an irrepressible call to radical, explosive action.

Zarqawi was born during the epochal outer planet alignment featuring a Uranus-Pluto conjunction opposite a Saturn-Chiron conjunction. At the time, this polarity fostered social unrest throughout the global village. Many people born during that era live today with this inner urge to radical action (Uranus-Pluto) delicately balanced with the need to live within accepted norms (Saturn-Chiron). Zarqawi, on the other hand, is the ultimate expression of the violent anarchist, determined to sabotage the reigning authority.

The Top Five Astro-Events for March 2006

1. Mercury retrogrades through Pisces between March 2 and March 25 - Mercury becomes absentminded in Pisces, and even more so when retrograde. Under hard aspects from other planets, Mercury here fosters deception, fraud, and unrealistic goals. Geopolitically, watch for extra misinformation, propaganda and spin, especially from March 1-4, 13-14, and 17-18.

2. Mars squares Uranus - exact on March 11, but a powerful influence during the first two weeks of March. This highly explosive, militant vibe leads to terrorist attacks, ethnic and sectarian reprisals, and disruption of oil production. Mars in Gemini (transportation) afflicting Uranus in seafaring Pisces suggests airplane accidents and conflict over port authority.

3. Ceres in Aquarius - fosters women's rights, especially the right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. Ceres opposes Saturn on March 10 and is conjunct Chiron on March 19, making March the month when Roe v. Wade becomes widely discussed, and edges** toward the Supreme Court for modification.

4. Jupiter squares Neptune - exact on March 16, but a significant influence throughout March. The blending of the two planets associated with religion and spirituality increases the value of religion in all geopolitical interactions. In Iraq, and throughout the Middle East, we've seen this as the increased power of the cleric and the corresponding decreasing influence of political, elected leaders.

5. Solar Eclipse - exact on March 29, the path of totality crosses North Africa, Turkey, and Iran, with strong influence over the oil-producing Islamic nations. Solar Eclipses often coincide with spectacular geopolitical events. Already, analysts are formulating worst-case scenarios if civil war breaks out in Iraq, beginning with Iran joining Iraq's Shiites.

Simon Cowell, America's Favorite Villain

In what one network TV executive called "the most competitive night in the history of American television," American Idol beat out the Olympics, Survivor, and Dancing with the Stars. Led by a heated confrontation between host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell, American Idol drew some 18 million viewers to the 8 pm Thursday time-slot, which was enough to claim a ratings victory.

Most astrologers consider Libras to be charming, friendly, and diplomatic, but Libra Simon Cowell (October 7, 1959; Brighton, UK; time unknown) doesn't seem to fit the mold. Simon's Mercury and Mars in Libra likewise are generally considered to be more people-pleasers than troublemakers. Scanning the traditional planetary aspects from other planets to his Mars and Mercury doesn't reveal any additional curmudgeon-like pressures.

However, over in Virgo, Simon has a Venus-Pluto conjunction, which makes him a natural critic (Virgo) of celebrity talent (Venus-Pluto). A cool, balanced (if not patronizing) trine from Saturn to his Venus-Pluto adds a practical, realistic approach, unbowed by sentiment or emotion. Simon's Mars happens to be perfectly octile (45º) his Pluto, which is where the unbridled – perhaps brutal – remarks enter the picture.

Ryan Seacrest (December 24, 1974) has his Capricorn Sun conjunct Simon's Saturn, which makes him the youthful jester when juxtaposed with Simon's harsh decrees. Last Thursday, as the transiting Sun opposed Simon's Venus-Pluto, Ryan challenged Simon to give some constructive advice instead of nasty criticism. Unblinking, Simon stayed his ground, where he gave the spicy counterpoint (Libra) to the otherwise saccharine, bland comments of co-judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
