Mars Turns Direct

A doctor in New York, interviewed by a local newspaper, reported that his phone calls have increased 50 percent since Thanksgiving, and that one Monday he had over 300 calls, many complaining of headaches. While the traditional holiday season often brings plenty of frustration, pains, and stresses along with the joys, this one seems more difficult than usual.

The celestial patterns are certainly reflecting this state of affairs, especially this week as Mars turns direct in Taurus. Mars has been spending an inordinate amount of time in Taurus since the war planet has been in the midst of its retrograde phase. During the last month, Mars has also been forming a close square to Saturn in Leo, a truly difficult combination.

Mars-Saturn aspects are renowned for their association with conflict, and since Mars is turning direct exactly opposite the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, American politics are unusually rife with bitter confrontations. Mars-Saturn is also associated with physical pain and even torture, a scandalous condition that Condoleezza Rice had to come to terms with last week* during her official visit with skeptical European leaders.

Across the geopolitical spectrum, and especially where American interests are paramount, we can expect heated disagreements, insurmountable obstacles, and annoying delays. From the U.N. summit on global warming, to Iraq, to Alaska, direct challenges will be the norm right through the end of December when Mars completes its square to Saturn. This week, as Mars turns direct, we can expect the most mission-oriented factions and individuals to take on their opponents, adversaries, and enemies.

MS13 and Oscar Romero

A NewsScope reader writes: "I would be curious to know if you can find an astrological explanation for the MS13 phenomenon... and possibly some insights into the solution, if it does exist." The correspondent is referring to the paramilitary-styled gangs currently plaguing several of America's metropolitan areas, and recently featured on 60 Minutes. MS13 originally formed in the mid-1980s in Los Angeles, but the gang members came here as refugees from El Salvador.

El Salvador's 1821 horoscope doesn't reveal the extent of the problem, since the tiny Central American country owes so much of its historical development to U.S. actions. In the early 1980s, those who could escaped the horrific civil war between the U.S.-backed oligarchy and leftist guerrillas. The last hope for peaceful resolution to El Salvador's social inequities died with the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero on March 24, 1980 (6:25 pm; San Salvador**).

The horoscope for this moment reveals the hidden ties to American influence. Mars forms a close square to Uranus, reflecting the violence of the moment. More significantly, these two planets are exactly aligned with the U.S. Moon at 25º Aquarius, showing how the event would negatively impact America's domestic security (Moon). Immediately before Romero's assassination, he sent a public letter to President Jimmy Carter, begging him not to give military aid to El Salvador's junta.

Carter never responded, and the U.S. aid facilitated the civil war that eventually led to the foundation of MS13. In the assassination chart, Saturn and Neptune are exactly square, signaling the tragic loss of hope (Neptune). These planets are also perfectly aligned with the U.S. Mars, reflecting the intervention of the U.S. military. The implications are that America's problems with MS13 are rooted in its own actions.

Matt Damon's Jupiter Defies Bad Air over Hollywood

So many celebrity couples have broken up over the last two weeks that one star observer complained of "a bad air over Hollywood celebrity couples." Actress Valerie Bertinelli filed for divorce from her musician husband Eddie Van Halen. Nicole Ritchie called off her engagement, Jessica Simpson split from Nick Lachey, and Britney Spears was having very public problems with her new husband.

Astrologically, the "bad air" can be attributed to an extremely challenging celestial configuration between Mars, Saturn, Neptune, and Jupiter. These four planets are forming a fixed Grand Cross, and everyone with their natal Sun or other prominent planet in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius is feeling the stress. The prolonged passage of Mars in Taurus while squaring Saturn in Leo is unusually confrontational.

A notable exception to the dissonant tenor of the times is the marriage of Libra Matt Damon (October 8, 1970; 3:22 pm; Boston) to his sweetheart Lucianne Bozan, although the union may be considered necessary since she's about three months pregnant. With his Sun conjunct Uranus, Damon does enjoy companionship as long as he's allowed plenty of personal freedom.

Damon's Venus in Scorpio opposes Saturn, which pushes his need for personal freedom into fear of commitment. However, Juno (the marriage asteroid) has now progressed to conjoin his Saturn, putting a heavy responsibility on him to marry. It's not all "It's-the-right-thing-to-do" vibe though, since he's also experiencing a Jupiter Return. Expansive Jupiter means new doors are opening for him, even if he didn't plan it that way.
