The Torturous Mars-Saturn Square

Mars is in a powerful zodiacal area now, as it retrogrades through Taurus, and begins to slow down in preparation for its direct motion. Over the next six weeks Mars will be in an unusually prolonged square to Saturn. This Mars-Saturn influence is a genuine troublemaker at all levels of human interaction, from the personal to the geopolitical.

Individuals with their Sun or prominent planets in the middle degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) will be feeling the brunt of this oppressive celestial confrontation. Hot-headed Mars builds up anger in Taurus, ready to release it in an explosive attack when the pressure becomes unbearable. And Saturn in controlling, authoritarian Leo provides plenty of pressure.

Expect the Washington political scene to turn ugly, with hardball politics taking over everywhere. Mars-Saturn aspects are known for their brutality, and one of the central issues is about American brutality, or the use of torture. Last week, under the vibrations of this Mars-Saturn square, Washington Post reporter Dana Priest revealed details of secret CIA interrogation operations.

Senator John McCain (August 29, 1936; 9:00 am; Panama) will likely be a prominent player in this mess, since his Mars in Leo is right in line with this transiting Mars-Saturn square. He's taking on Vice President Dick Cheney, who has his Aquarian Sun exactly opposite McCain's Mars. At stake is America's image, which will likely be at the top of the news stories as Mars turns direct on December 8 while opposing the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant.

Jordan's King Hussein, Peacemaker

On July 9, 2005, Osama bin Laden's chief strategist wrote a letter to Al-Zarqawi, the nominal head of Al Qaeda in Iraq. The CIA managed to obtain a copy, and recently released a translated version, which revealed Al Qaeda's strategy in the Middle East. Last week the simultaneous bombing of three hotels in Jordan's capital Amman underscored the significance of this extraordinary letter.

Jordan's King Abdullah II (January 30, 1962; 5:20 am; Amman, Jordan - according to Israeli astrologer Isaac Starkman) is known as a peacemaker, a political description that fits his Sun-Venus conjunction in Aquarius. With three other planets in Aquarius (Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury), King Abdullah has used the networking vision of this sign to make political alliances all around him, including with Israel and the United States.

King Abdullah was born during a rare confluence of planets in Aquarius, so that he, more than any global leader, instinctively understands the concept of interdependence, a key Aquarian perspective. Psychic Jeanne Dixon wrote in her autobiography that on or around the New Moon during this Aquarian alignment, a great peacemaker would be born in the Middle East.

However, his mediating puts him at odds with Al Qaeda and other Islamic extremists. His enemies are now drawing near, as transiting Saturn opposes his Sun and transiting Mars squares it. This coming week he's scheduled to visit the West Bank in Israel as these transits become tighter and more dangerous. He can expect much trouble during his visit, but the potential for creative solutions also beckons.

Joaquin Phoenix Walks the Line

Actor Joaquin Phoenix's much-anticipated portrayal of Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line" opens nationwide this coming Friday. Unlike last year's musical biopic "Ray", where Ray Charles is depicted conquering his own demons, Cash is shown as being saved by a good woman. Phoenix sings, looks, and acts like Johnny Cash, a reflection assisted by many parallels between their horoscopes.

Joaquin Phoenix was born with his Sun in the intense, brooding sign of Scorpio (October 28, 1974; San Juan, Puerto Rico; time unknown). The Sun is conjunct Mars, allowing him to project himself on film and stage. The Sun's trine to Jupiter in Pisces, along with Saturn in Cancer, completes a Grand Trine in the Water signs, adding emotional depth, sensitivity, and feeling that are often best expressed through the arts.

Johnny Cash (February 26, 1932; 7:30 am; Kingstand, AR**) has a similar Water Grand Trine, with his Sun conjunct Mars (like Phoenix) in Pisces, Moon in Scorpio, and Pluto in Cancer. All four of these planets are in the same degree area as Phoenix's water planets. Perhaps the most significant of these alignments is Phoenix's Sun conjunct Cash's Scorpio Moon, so that he animates Cash's dark soul.

Transiting Jupiter will be conjunct Phoenix's Sun as the movie premieres, which will likely bring him plenty of attention and success. Also, transiting Uranus turns direct on Phoenix's Juno, the marriage asteroid. Not coincidentally, the film co-stars Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. Watch for media stories about the behind-the-scenes interactions between Phoenix and Witherspoon, as well as the cinematic play between Johnny Cash and June Carter.
