Uranus Shakes Up Election
Minnesota's liberal Senator Paul Wellstone died unexpectedly in a plane crash last Friday. Wellstone was in a competitive race to maintain his seat in the Senate, currently controlled by the Democrats by a slim one-vote margin. The battle for the Senate is now entering uncharted territory.
Paul Wellstone was born an emotional Cancer (July 21, 1944), but with his Moon among five planets in Leo, his emotions reached dramatic, passionate proportions. Transiting Neptune was opposing his Pluto at the time of the crash, perhaps fogging his judgment about flying safety. Neptune here also eulogizes his political passion, as symbolized by Pluto.
The asteroid Ceres is also found in Leo, and at the time of the crash (10:22 am, October 25; Eveleth, MN), this asteroid was the most powerfully activated point in his chart. Ceres emphasizes the family relations, and he died with his wife and daughter on the plane. In the political sense, Ceres represents the programs he favored that provided material assistance for those individuals and families that needed help. Transiting Jupiter was conjunct his Ceres at the same time transiting Pluto was trine, forever marking his reputation as someone who cares.
Transiting Uranus turns direct on November 4, the day before the election. Uranus here is very close to the U.S. Moon, promising an exciting election up to the last minute. We can anticipate a general climate of fast-paced, sudden developments, where it seems like everything is happening at once. Uranus brings the unexpected, and Wellstone's death, along with the sniper case and the pending war with Iraq all combine to produce an adrenaline-rushing political season.
James, the Brother of Jesus
Last Monday scholars announced the discovery of a 2000-year old limestone burial box, which provides the oldest archaeological evidence for the historical existence of Jesus. An inscription on the ossuary (as it is called) says: "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus." Scholars believe that the ossuary belonged to James, the brother of Jesus, who was the leader of the early Christian church in Jerusalem.
The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls (November 30, 1947; 12:05 am; Jerusalem*) provides the best horoscope for plotting the significance of this stunning ancient artifact because they revealed to intrepid scholars the early primacy of James, the brother of Jesus. Transiting Jupiter is conjunct this chart's Pluto, reflecting the rare quality of the find.
At the same time, transiting Saturn is in the tenth house and conjunct the Moon and Uranus in Gemini. Saturn here is bringing an authoritarian challenge to the intellectual debates that sprouted from the interpretations of the Dead Sea Scrolls, notably, over the role James played in early Christianity. These planets are all in Gemini, the sign of brothers.
Transiting Pluto is crossing over the foundation of this chart, essentially bringing to the surface a revolutionary (in the religious sense) object. The Catholic Church is especially concerned since tradition affirms that Jesus had no brother (transiting Saturn is conjunct the Catholic Sun - see NewsScope March 18 and 25, 2002). The original box owner didn't realize the significance of his find, saying, "How could the Son of God have a brother?"
John Allen Muhammad, Sniper
Three weeks ago NewsScope reported several of the sniper's characteristics based on the event horoscope of the first shooting. This included his military training, that he had an accomplice, and that he was sympathetic to Al Qaeda objectives. Now that we know who the sniper is, a more detailed picture emerges.
John Allen Muhammad was born a serious Capricorn (December 31, 1960; Baton Rouge, LA; time unknown). His Sun and Mercury are opposed to Mars, a configuration known to incite extreme irritability and aggression against others. In this case, the Sun's more favorable links to Neptune and Pluto gave him enough sympathy and will power to control his destructive tendencies, that is, until he developed Gulf War Syndrome.
Pentagon records show that this accused sniper participated in the destruction of the chemical weapons depot at Khamisiyah, Iraq from March 4-15, 1991, the incident blamed for at least 10,000 cases of Gulf War Syndrome.** At the time his Neptune, the natural ruler of poisonous gases, was powerfully activated (progressed Sun square Neptune). Veterans react differently to nerve agent exposure, but with Muhammad's already delicately balanced psyche, he tipped into violence.
His young companion may have pushed him into the shooting spree. John Lee Malvo (February 18, 1985; Kingston, Jamaica; time unknown) was born with his Pisces Sun conjunct Muhammad's Ceres, an ideal father-son connection. However, Malvo's Mars in impulsive Aries squares Muhammad's Sun-Mars polarity, activating it, even igniting it. As transiting Uranus opposed Muhammad's own Uranus, he cracked. He could no longer contain himself.
