Saturn and Pluto as Peacemakers

Former President Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his peacemaking and humanitarian work over the last 25 years. The Nobel Committee used the occasion to take a swipe at the Bush administration's readiness to use unilateral force, saying, "Carter has stood by the principles that conflicts must as far as possible be resolved through mediation and international cooperation."

Jimmy Carter was born with his Sun in diplomatic Libra (October 1, 1924; 7:00 am; Plains, GA) and Mars, his war planet, in the teamwork sign of Aquarius. George Bush Senior has his Mars in the exact same degree* of Aquarius, and likewise preferred to get his work done with the full cooperation of the international community.

Two other U.S. Presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. All three Presidents have a prominent Saturn, which builds character and confers a sense of responsibility. Wilson (December 29, 1856; 12:45 am; Staunton, VA) has his Sun opposite Saturn. Roosevelt (October 27, 1858; 7:45 pm; NYC) has the Sun square Saturn. Carter has Saturn conjunct his Ascendant.

Another astrological parallel is the prominence of Pluto (Carter: Sun square Pluto, Roosevelt: Sun opposite Pluto, Wilson: Sun trine Pluto). Many astrologers describe the immense challenges faced by individuals with Sun-Pluto aspects, and indeed all three of these Presidents had great personal crises to overcome. But when the responsible political leader is working effectively with Pluto, he becomes empowered to initiate constructive geopolitical changes.

Uranus Keeps Nation on Edge

Last week both houses of Congress gave their stamp of approval to President Bush to use military force against Saddam Hussein if the United Nations fails to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction. Across the country the vast majority of Americans expressed deep reservations about the rush to war. Peace demonstrations, mass marches and city editorials reminded older activists of the protests in the Sixties.

The widespread nervousness over the possibility of war with Iraq can be attributed to the transit of Uranus. At the moment, Uranus is at 25 AQ, very near the U.S. Moon. Uranus remains within one-half a degree of the U.S. Moon for three months, an unusually lengthy phase since Uranus is about to turn direct in its apparent motion. When this happens on November 4, Uranus will be halfway through its unbearably stressful connection to the U.S. Moon.

In political astrology, the Moon represents the nation's people and their security needs. Uranus is the planet which upsets the status quo, and tends to bring crises and rapidly-changing circumstances to shake people out of their comfort zones. Since two-thirds of the stock market is based on consumer confidence, the pervasive disbelief over the CEO fraud cases has dropped the markets to their lowest levels in several years.

Uranus turns direct on election day (marking a very important turning point), and then advances to conjunct the U.S. Moon on December 10. Not until well after that will people begin to feel some relief from the national mood of impending disaster and uncertainty. The sniper in Washington D.C. area only adds to the pervasive sense of anxiety. In December transiting Saturn trines the U.S. Moon, offering some hope that national affairs will be more under control.

Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks is widely regarded as the most powerful man in Hollywood, a status well-earned from his endless string of box office successes and numerous acting awards. How does he do it? He explained tearfully during his acceptance speech for his second Oscar: "I'm standing here because the woman I share my life with has taught me and demonstrates every day just what love is."

Rita Wilson was born with her Sun in magnetic Scorpio (October 26, 1958; Los Angeles; time unknown) and her Moon in fiery Aries. This aggressive combination is greatly softened since her Sun is conjunct graceful Neptune and sensual Venus. The Sun-Venus-Neptune triple conjunction gives her a mystical aura, like a love goddess. Based on this measurement alone, the astrologer might conclude that she is the embodiment of peace and blissful pleasures.

However, when comparing her chart to Tom Hanks' (July 9, 1956; 11:17 am; Concord, CA), the basis of their compatibility suddenly shifts. Her Saturn is conjunct his fourth house cusp, the foundation of his horoscope. The fourth house represents the home life, and is especially important for a Cancer. Her Saturn here grounds him, giving him the domestic stability that he never found when he was growing up.

Surprisingly, his Mars squares her Saturn and her Mars opposes his Saturn. This doubled message becomes a defining signature of their relationship, and can often lead to intense fights. These Mars-Saturn links indicate that their partnership is far from smooth sailing. They must have had bitter, nasty confrontations along the way, yet remain a loving couple. With the Mars-Saturn dynamic, their love must be based not on sweet harmonies, but on forgiveness.

* Carter and Bush (41) having Mars at 25AQ is not a coincidence since the U.S. Moon (in the Scorpio Rising horoscope) is at 25 AQ. The nation's people (the Moon) are excited and aroused by the Presidents' assertive style (Mars).
