Iraq Prepares for War
Following Vice President Dick Cheney's bellicose speech last week, Iraqi
military forces began digging in to protect Baghdad and other major cities in
preparation for urban warfare. U.S. officials said that taking the fight to
the streets is probably Saddam's best strategy since it would neutralize U.S.
air power, and in the block-by-block fighting, cause unacceptable U.S. and
civilian casualties.
The imminent war can be followed astrologically by looking into the
horoscopes for Saddam Hussein and Iraq. Saddam Hussein (April 28, 1937;
Tikrit, Iraq; time controversial) has a Sun-Uranus conjunction in Taurus, a
combination perfectly describing his determination to dig in and hold his
ground. The pending Jupiter-Neptune opposition, exact on September 11,
squares his Sun-Uranus combination.
From the several national charts for Iraq, the first one* is probably the
most significant since the U.S. position aims at completely reconfiguring the
government through outside intervention. Iraq was originally created after
World War I when the victorious British generals drew lines on maps, and
formally granted independence on August 23, 1921 (6:00 am; Baghdad).
Astrologers will note the Mars-Neptune conjunction in the 12th house of
behind-the-scenes activities reflects the manner in which Iraq was created.
This same aspect was powerfully activated when Saddam invaded Kuwait on
August 2, 1990 (by the Solar Eclipse and Grand Cross). At the moment
transiting Jupiter is heading into this same degree zone as British and
American warplanes are becoming more engaged. Watch around September 8 (as
transit Jupiter is inconjunct Iraq's Uranus) for a sudden escalation.
The Uranus-Neptune Double Whammy
Last week the Center for Disease Control reported that four people in
Illinois died of the West Nile Virus, the latest indication that global
warming is allowing the mosquito-borne disease to move northward. So far this
year 453 human cases have been diagnosed and when including animals, the
virus has been detected in 41 states.
Astrologically, the U.S. is undergoing an outer-planet double whammy
contributing to the great concern over infectious disease. Transiting Neptune
is squaring the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant (exact September 11) during the same
month that transiting Uranus is conjunct the U.S. Moon (exact September 27).
This potent combination has an historical precedent: the 1918 flu epidemic
that caused 25 percent of Americans to fall ill and kill some 500,000.
Uranus and Neptune move around the Sun in an almost exact 2:1 ratio, so that
in the 84 years it takes Uranus to make one orbit, Neptune is halfway through
its cycle. In 1918 Neptune was opposite its present location and exactly
squaring the U.S. Ascendant, while Uranus was conjunct the U.S. Moon in
Aquarius. Just as the U.S. was preparing for World War I and experiencing the
flu epidemic, so the U.S. is now preparing for war and experiencing the West
Nile Virus.
Some historians believe that the 1918 influenza bug was planted in New York
by German spies. Transiting Uranus to the U.S. Moon describes a pervasive
public mood characterized by high anxiety. The Neptune influence relates to
uncertainty and also corresponds to infectious disease. While the West Nile
Virus is a relatively mild occurrence, military planners are most concerned
about biological weapons created by Soviet scientists that may now be in
terrorists' hands or Saddam Hussein's arsenal.
'N Sync's Lance Bass Heading for Space
On October 28 'N Sync singer Lance Bass is scheduled to blast off to the
International Space Station in a Russian spacecraft. He's been in training
for months while his sponsors haggle over the Russian's $20 million fee. Last
week NASA and several other space agencies agreed to Bass' participation,
saying that he would inspire a new generation of space explorers.
Lance Bass was born a determined Taurus (May 4, 1979; Laurel, MS; time
unknown) with his Moon in dramatic Leo. All the outer planets play key roles
in his horoscope, indicating that his personal life is infused with the
challenges and tendencies for an entire generation. Uranus, the planet
signifying the revolutionary break from the past or conventional ways, is
strongly placed by being opposite his Sun and square his Moon.
Saturn, on the other hand, represents that structured, traditional way of
doing things. Since his Saturn is in disciplined Virgo and harmoniously trine
his Sun, Bass has the maturity and favor of his elders (when he chooses).
This combination of Saturn and Uranus both shaping his Sun gives him an
ability to bridge the gap between the older and younger generations.
His Mars is in pioneering Aries, coupled with Mercury and Venus. This
dignified Mars is enhanced by a trine to musical Neptune, and by being
opposite Pluto is driven to overcome rivals and huge obstacles that most
people wouldn't even attempt. Pluto opposite his Aries planets gives him
unique perspective, and when he reaches the Space Station, he promises to
sing a song.
* according to Campion's The Book of National Horoscopes. This chart works
very well in practice. For example, check the progressions for the invasion
of Kuwait. It happened during a progressed lunation (progressed Sun conjunct
progressed Moon), which was also conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant and
opposed to Saddam's Sun-Uranus.
