Earth Summit in Johannesburg
Leaders from around the global community converge on Johannesburg, South
Africa this week to attend a U.N. sponsored summit on the environment.
Officially known as The World Summit on Sustainable Development, the
conference will be attended by 106 presidents and prime ministers, including
all the G-8 leaders (from the eight most industrialized nations), with the
noticeable exception of George W. Bush.
The Summit begins on August 26, the day that Pluto turns direct. The current
Earth Summit follows the historical 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, which in turn
was the 20th anniversary of the landmark 1972 Earth Summit in Stockholm.
These previous international eco-events both began on June 5 when the Sun was
located at 15 degrees Gemini, and exactly opposite the current location of
Pluto. Pluto opposed to the Earth Summits' Sun represents powerful opposition
by an influential faction, namely, the world's richest nation and heaviest
polluter, the United States.
The entire convention takes place under the planetary vibrations of
transiting Jupiter and Neptune which are moving into an opposition with each
other. Jupiter in Leo may be seen as the imperial or sovereign right of
individual nations, while Neptune in Aquarius is the vision for an
interdependent network of nations working in harmony for the common good.
The Summit ends on September 4 when the Moon in Leo conjoins Jupiter. This
conjunction happens to take place exactly on George Bush's Leo Ascendant.
Bush will be under pressure to come up with an alternative vision. We can
expect that he will be promoting a competing plan for sustainable
development, and the right of the U.S. to pursue its own economic security.
The Jupiter-Neptune Cycle
U.N experts reported last week that Afghanistan's new government has largely
failed to eradicate this year's opium poppy crop. Last year the deposed
Taliban managed to reduce the acreage devoted to opium by 95 percent. Now
Afghanistan's U.S.-backed warlords are overseeing a return to the 1990 levels
when Afghanistan supplied some 70 percent of the world's heroin.
Astrologically, these conditions can be correlated to the influence of
Neptune, the natural ruler of drugs, which is in a long-term square to the
U.S. Scorpio Ascendant (set for July 4, 1776; 2:21 pm; Philadelphia).
Simultaneously, transiting Jupiter in Leo is opposing Neptune, activating the
underlying dynamics. These planetary conditions point to increased media
attention on drug lords in both Colombia and Afghanistan, as well as major
stories about health care drugs.
Then, the Bush Administration's oil constituency (ruled by Neptune) hopes the
Earth Summit will not focus on global warming, largely caused by burning
fossil fuels. Watch for many stories and events, a veritable media blitz,
portraying the heroes (Jupiter in Leo) and victims (Neptune) of the 9/11
incident since the opposition becomes exact on September 11, 2002.
Jupiter opposite Neptune describes how the mighty and proud may fall through
scandal. The financial assets of Enron executives were frozen last week, as
the biggest corporate bankruptcy in history unravels. Pope John Paul also
fits in this Jupiter-Neptune phase since he was born with Jupiter and Neptune
conjunct in Leo. Last week he made his farewell visit to Poland as transiting
Jupiter and Neptune move into alignment with his own Jupiter-Neptune.
Gwyneth Paltrow's Saturn Return
In her latest movie, Possession, actress Gwyneth Paltrow plays an English
academic who teams up with an American scholar to investigate the love
letters of two Victorian poets. Because modern lovers have no restrictive
Victorian conventions, Paltrow says, "We impose on ourselves a way to hold
back - which is by overanalyzing everything and making everything a study in
psychology."
Gwyneth Paltrow has just experienced her Saturn Return (September 28, 1972;
Los Angeles; time unknown), and for a Libra, this means she has naturally
become more practical and wiser about relationships. With her Sun conjunct
intense Pluto in the sign of partnerships, she came into this life with a
need to understand relationships on a deeper level than prevailing social
traditions.
Now that Saturn has completed one circuit around her horoscope, a maturing
process that happens to everyone around the age of 28 to 30, Paltrow has
learned to tame her wild passions. She says she used to totally immerse
herself in love, as if she were dousing herself in kerosene and lighting a
match. "And then you learn not to do that, I think, fortunately or
unfortunately."
As Saturn returned to its natal position over the past year, it formed
harmonious links to her Ceres in Libra opposite Chiron in Aries. The
Ceres-Chiron influence is commonly found in the charts of alternative
healers, as they blend the nurturing, care-taking function of Ceres, with the
holistic awareness of Chiron. In Paltrow's case, she has committed to a
macrobiotic diet and yoga as a healthy lifestyle during her Saturn Return.
