Jenin, The Genesis of Palestine
Did the Israeli army commit a massacre in Jenin? Last week U.N.
Secretary-General Koffi Annan called off a fact-finding commission into the
Palestinian refugee camp when Israel's hard-line cabinet members obstructed
the U.N. team's arrival. Now Jenin, and the siege of Arafat's compound in
Ramallah, are becoming the mythological building blocks for the emerging
Palestinian nation.
The astrological factors in play during the eight days of bitter fighting in
Jenin reflect the importance of this event in shaping the political debate.
Israel's horoscope (May 14, 1948; 4:37 pm; Tel Aviv) features the Sun in
Taurus square Mars in Leo. Transiting Mars activated this dynamic on April 3
when it was conjunct Israel's Sun, and this was when Israeli troops began the
Jenin operation. By April 11 the fighting there concluded, precisely as
transiting Mars exited the natal configuration by squaring Mars.
Israel has Neptune in its twelfth house of secret activity, isolation and
confinement. This Neptune can be seen as the Palestinian refugee camps, as
well as Israel's own secret intelligence since Neptune is perfectly trine
Mercury, the planet of intelligence gathering. Another, larger planetary
influence occurring during the Jenin incident (transiting Saturn and Neptune
forming a Grand Trine with natal Neptune-Mercury) underscores its
mythological relevance.
The ongoing Saturn-Pluto opposition has mostly been interpreted by
astrologers as leading to all kinds of disasters. However, in the seemingly
hopeless Middle East situation only this kind of horror is enough to generate
international concern to intercede and force negotiations. In this sense, the
restructuring tendencies of Saturn-Pluto aspects are favorable for creating
long-term solutions.
Saturn-Pluto Brings Realism to Markets
The largest quarterly loss in history took place last week when AOL Time
Warner Inc. reported a $54 billion accounting adjustment. The huge debit was
purely on paper and didn't actually exist other than changing the accounting
value known as "goodwill." The loss reflects the dramatic fall in AOL's stock
price, as well as the tighter accounting practices following the Arthur
Anderson/Enron scandal.
Saturn and Pluto have opposed each other twice over the last century, and
it's not a coincidence that the first one took place during the depths of the
Great Depression. That phase provides clues about the current cycle. The
Great Depression was great from an astrological perspective because of the
additional factor of Uranus squaring the Saturn-Pluto combination, creating a
stressful three-planet configuration.
The absolute bottom of the market took place in March 1933 shortly after the
final Saturn-Pluto opposition, but most precisely, during the final
Uranus-Pluto square which ended the three-planet interaction. March 1933 was
also when the new President initiated significant financial reforms, ushering
in a wave of investor confidence.
From this lesson we can see that the planets inspire corrective financial
reform, and not until this happens can one expect markets to reverse. AOL's
write-off is a good sign, and other accounting adjustments and new
legislation is on Congress's and the SEC's agendas. When transiting Jupiter
is conjunct the U.S. Sun on May 14, watch for positive developments in the
Israeli-Palestinian situation, which in turn would lead to renewed investor
confidence.
Yao Ming, the Humble and Quick Giant
China's best basketball player, Yao Ming, was in the United States last week
showing his stuff to 65 NBA scouts. The 7-foot-5 center made an impressive
showing, with nimble passes and jump shots that a smaller, quicker guard
could make, and shot blocks and easy dunks that his giant size allows.
Yao Ming was born a reliable Virgo (September 12, 1980; Shanghai; time
unknown) with his Sun conjunct expansive Jupiter. Jupiter, the largest planet
in the solar system, tends to make everything larger, and in this case it's
physically true. The Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Virgo is blessed by modesty,
one of the greatest virtues in China.
Ming's Sun-Jupiter forms a favorable trine to Chiron, a combination that
according to the Magi Society* is extremely favorable for business success.
Currently, NBA pundits speculate that his signing contract plus product
endorsements could make him anywhere between $50 and $150 million. Ming's
Sun-Jupiter is also enhanced by a sextile to Uranus, giving him the right
celestial combo to be a superstar.
Ming carries a great mystique, partly because he doesn't yet speak English,
partly because he's such a phenomenal size and still moves like a cat, and
partly because his Sun squares mysterious Neptune. The Sun square Neptune has
a downside, the quality of the unknown. Ming's biggest challenge is upper
body weight, and the possibility that his knees and other joints may wear out
quickly. Watch on June 26 (the date of the NBA draft) as transiting Jupiter
trines his Uranus for an instant success story.

Society began as a secret order of Chinese monks in 1625, leaving the coastal
areas for Hong Kong in 1948. This book has some fascinating, alternative
views of the nature of Chiron.
