The Ascendant

The beginning of the 1st house is a significant element of understanding your personality. Along with your Sun (identity) and Moon (emotions), your Ascendant is the third of the most important factors astrologers look at in analyzing your personality.

Your Ascendant, or Rising Sign, is the zodiac constellation that was rising on the Eastern horizon when you were born. It is located at the left horizontal line between the 12th and 1st houses of your natal chart. The Ascendant is based upon your time* and location of birth.

Your Ascendant is how you project yourself in life, how others see you. It's also your rose-colored glasses, the lens filter of the sign that was rising at birth. A Virgo Ascendant may project themselves into life to be of useful service to the world. A Capricorn rising is more likely to take a cautious approach to the world than an adventure-seeking Sagittarius rising.

Knowledge of your rising sign will help you to understand why you project yourself into the world the way you do.

* If you cannot get your time of birth from a birth certificate, family member, or other government record, you can place your Sun sign on the Ascendant. This gives you a symbolic chart that provides accurate planetary placement, with only the fast-moving moon potentially in error. This is the method used for daily newspaper horoscope forecasts.

Spaced Out

A new science project to bring the size of the Solar System down to Earth - or at least to the UK - has been launched. "Spaced Out" aims to create the world's largest scale model of the Solar System.

The scale of 1 to 15 million reduces the distance between the Earth and the Sun to about 6 miles.

It will incorporate a total of 18 models which will represent the Sun, the nine planets, Halley's Comet and numerous asteroids.

Planet Earth will be sited in Macclesfield, England. Pluto will be in Fort William, Scotland; Saturn will be in Lancaster and Halley's Comet in London.

Uranus will be placed in Bath, where William Herschel lived when he discovered the planet in 1781.

The planets will be artistically represented, and many will be placed in schoolyards.

When the project opens in 2005, a website will have webcams of all the planets at once.

Monthly Horoscope for Everyone

This month is a great time to shed the weight of Winter. The Sun is in Aries, the sign of action, and Aries rules the 1st house of the Self. While the Sun is in Aries, it's a great time to do your Spring cleaning, both home and spirit. Enjoy the sunshine and bounce around the room!

Adding to Spring energy, Mars in Gemini will make you restless. On Monday you'll start one project just to decide that something else is more important on Tuesday.  Use this period for fact-gathering rather than implementation.

Mercury has gone into Taurus, and plans for your security are foremost in your mind. From April 6-30, though, Mercury will be in Retrograde. You'll have days when your prosperity will feel limitless, and other days when you'll think you're stuck.

With all this in mind, be careful not to speak impulsively when Mercury retrogrades back into Aries on April 12! All in all, this Aries cycle is a good time to do your behind-the-scenes work, but not to act on life decisions.

The good news is that the Solar Eclipse in Aries on April 19 will act as a "Reset Button".  Get ready to take the "Bull" by the horns in Taurus instead.

The Twelfth HouseLearn Astrology:
The 1st House, Self

"Houses" are the 12 pie slices in an astrology chart that astrologers use to interpret horoscopes. They're the realms of life within which your personality traits play out. They're calculated based on the sun's highest position on any given day.

The First House describes your outward behavior. It involves your disposition, appearance, manners, and sense of self. It is governed by Aries. The positive use of the first house is that it helps you to put your best foot forward into the world. The negative interpretation is that you can get caught up in excessive ego issues or the need to show off due to self-esteem or self-worth challenges.

The 1st house is also called the "Ascendant" - see the article above left. The first house indicates your outlook on life and helps you to project your unique talents and favorite activities into the world.

Your physical appearance may correlate with the zodiac sign on their first house cusp. A Libra Ascendant may be graceful while a Capricorn Ascendant may appear conservative and stern. An Aries first house may be athletic and prefer to wear bright, fiery clothing. A Pisces first house may appear dreamy and illusive, preferring gentle colors like the blue of the ocean. A Gemini rising may be thin and wiry, whereas a Sagittarius rising may be tall or large.

When you have natal planets in your first house, the planet flavors the way you project energy into the world. If you had Mars in the first house, for example, you passionately and courageously pioneer new paths in the world. However, you may need to work through anger issues or the tendency to not complete projects.

He just gave it to me last night and it is beautiful, I can't wait to wear it!! But for the few weeks it took to wait for it, it's all he talked about!"
