The Martians are coming!
On August 27 at 5:51am EDT, Mars will be 34,646,418 miles from Earth, the closest it's been for 60,000 years!
As Mars and the Earth both orbit the Sun in elliptical paths, there are times when the two orbits are closer to each other and times when they are farther. In this current retrograde period of Mars the two are passing at the closest point possible between the two elliptical paths. This means that in our night skies Mars will appear bigger and brighter than we have ever seen him in recorded history and will ever again for centuries to come. You won’t want to miss witnessing this rare event!
How will you find it? Look up! It's the big red "star" in the sky (you can tell the difference between planets and stars because planets don't blink). It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. With 75-power binoculars, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars, by the way, is also in retrograde. It's one of the reasons for all the turmoil in the Middle East!

Mercury Retrograde
Because all the planets orbit at different rates, when they pass each other, it looks as though the planet is moving backwards across the sky. If you've ever been on a train when a faster train passes you going in the same direction, and you momentarily feel like you are moving backwards, you've experienced retrograde. This dizzying effect can happen for anywhere from a few weeks to a few decades!
This phenomenon is called "retrograde." In astrology, retrogrades are considered troublesome, similar to an upside-down card in a tarot reading.
About four times a year, Mercury, the planet associated with communication, electronics, and travel, goes into retrograde for about three weeks. Mercury will be going into retrograde again on August 28.
Decision making, planning, short trips, contracts, writing, and things done with the hands, are all susceptible when Mercury is retrograde. Misunderstandings happen. Plans change. Decisions are reversed. Cars break down and computers quit working (with this retrograde happening in Virgo, which rules Health, watch out for COMPUTER VIRUSES!).
So, the general advice for Mercury Retrograde periods is to double-check plans, expect delays, drive carefully, avoid signing contracts, back up your computer. If you're already a stress-monkey by nature, take some time to relax!
Mercury retrograde periods are a great time to go inside, since nothing outside will be working. REassess, REview, REvise, REvamp!
