Venus Softens Putin
An unusual wave of peaceful sentiments rippled across the global
village last week, although the pervasive vibe went largely unnoticed
in most media reports. On the back pages, one could read about
Israeli peace overtures to Syria, a tenuous cessation of conflict
in the Philippines, peace rallies in the Basque region, and renewed
efforts to establish peace in the devastated Darfur area.
Astrologically, the Sun and Venus were forming a harmonic connection,
as the two were 45º apart, an aspect known as the octile (one-eighth
of the 360º zodiac). The Sun, representing leadership and vitality,
was being influenced by peace-loving, cooperative Venus. This connection
remains in effect through June 18, and offers a window of opportunity
for rivals to settle their differences.
At last week's G-8 summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised
everyone by inviting Bush to set up his controversial missiles
in Azerbaijan. Putin (October 7, 1952; 9:30 am; Petrograd), with
his Sun and three more planets in Libra, is highly susceptible
to Venus's agenda. In addition, with transiting Saturn right on
his Leo Midheaven, he's looking to make a grand gesture that will
stand the test of time.
However, transiting Neptune is in a long-term opposition to his
Midheaven, creating doubt over his proposal's practicality. Putin
will meet with Bush in Kennebunkport on July 1 and 2, as transiting
Venus and Saturn conjoin his tenth house Pluto, which is the celestial
hallmark of an historically important summit. Since transiting
Juno will be right on Putin's Sun, we can expect much talk of "partnership".
Gerry McCann Spreads the Word
Madeleine McCann is still missing, despite an international awareness
campaign fostered by the British press and encouraged by her parents,
Gerry and Kate McCann. The McCanns have repeatedly issued pleas
on TV, in the newspapers, and during public appearances across
Western Europe. And they show no signs of slowing down in their
desperate attempt to locate their daughter.
Last Tuesday, Gerry turned 39, so that he was born with a restless,
talkative Gemini Sun (June 5, 1968; Leicester, UK; time unknown).
Naturally he spends most of his time spreading the word. His Moon
is either in late Virgo or early Libra, depending on his exact
birth time. However, if his Moon is at 27º or 28º Virgo, then it's
being squared by transiting Pluto, which fits his current experience
of being emotionally traumatized.
Gerry's unflagging efforts are fueled by a powerfully-placed Mars
at 19º Gemini, which is conjunct his Sun and square his Pluto.
When Maddie was kidnapped on May 3, transiting Mars was at 21º
Pisces, just a bit past the square to his natal Mars and the opposition
to his Pluto. This configuration might indicate a conflict of sorts
several days earlier, the nature of which one can only speculate.
Gerry's chart is characterized by a very tight Ceres-Saturn aspect.
Ceres, the parenting asteroid, opposes Saturn, the so-called Lord
of Karma. When Ceres is afflicted by any of the outer planets,
it can bring loss of loved ones. Gerry's progressed Sun will be
squaring this Ceres-Saturn axis over the coming year, indicating
a painful process of grieving and deep feelings of guilt.
We'll Always Have Paris
The Los Angeles Sheriff's office set off a furor last Thursday
when it announced that Paris Hilton would be released from jail
after serving only three days of a 23-day sentence. Responding
rapidly to a storm of criticism, the judge reversed the Sheriff's
decision, and sent a tearful Paris back to the slammer. Most major
media interrupted their regular broadcasts to cover this celebrity
news story.
Paris Hilton was born (February 17, 1981; 8:37 pm**, New York,
NY) with a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction near her Libra Ascendant.
She went to jail as transiting Mercury, the ruler of her 12th house
of incarceration, was conjunct her Midheaven and heading into a
square with her Saturn. Under the influence of Mercury-to-Saturn,
she responded with the appropriate sense of remorse.
Then, as transiting Mercury was squaring her Jupiter, she was let
go for unspecified medical reasons. Astrologically, the unexpected
early release and then the dramatic return are characteristic of
electric Uranus, which is now nearing its maximum voltage. Uranus
is pausing at 18º Pisces in preparation for its retrograde phase
where it makes an exact quincunx to Paris Hilton's Moon at 18º
Leo.
Some people go crazy when transiting Uranus makes a hard hit their
Moon. Getting shocked (Uranus) out of their comfort zone (Moon)
makes for an emotional roller coaster and high anxiety. Paris's
psychological stability is volatile in any case, since she has
Uranus in the third house of mental attitude where it squares her
Sun. The Sheriff reported that she was suffering from a mental
disorder, and her condition was deteriorating. The astrology confirms
this assessment.
