Democratic Candidates Take Center Stage

As Bush's poll numbers plummet along with Republican hopes for the 2008 presidential election, all eight Democratic candidates held their first debate last Thursday, with MSNBC's Brian Williams as moderator. By most accounts, among the top-tier candidates, Hillary Clinton emerged as the most presidential, Barack Obama is still learning the ropes, and John Edwards faltered.

On election day, November 4, 2008, transiting Saturn and Uranus make their first of three oppositions to each other, pitting the cautious status quo against the impulse for dramatic and radical change. Unless the GOP can somehow find a candidate who represents the compelling Uranian winds of change, Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton will most likely be the next U.S. President.

In projecting which of these two candidates will take the global village's number-one job, astrologers are burdened with questionable birth times. In my opinion, Hillary (being known by first name only is a sure sign of celebrity) was born at 8:00 am (October 26, 1947; Chicago), and Obama was born at 1:06 pm (August 4, 1961; Honolulu).

What makes Obama such an exceptionally interesting candidate is that his progressed Venus is conjunct Uranus, which gives him the charisma and popularity of a rock star. This combination happens to be perfectly aligned with the U.S. Moon, making him an American favorite. However, this configuration reaches maximum voltage next month, leaving his fate to lesser, but still favorable, planetary alignments. Using these birth times*, Hillary seems most likely to emerge as America's first woman president.

Top Five Astro-Events for May 2007

1. A Fire Grand Trine connecting Jupiter, Saturn, and Ceres is exact on May 5-6, bringing a bountiful phase of immense creativity in community, state, and international affairs. Businesses prosper as environmental initiatives take hold. Conversely, the U.S. progressed Mars is activated, possibly leading to some domestic violence or terrorist event (as transiting Mars squares the U.S. Mars).

2. Jupiter squares Uranus on May 10, a progress-oriented dynamic that changes the status quo across social, cultural, and political horizons, and is especially favorable for new technologies. Then, on May 11 Mars activates the Solar Eclipse of March 19, unleashing enormous potential for a major geopolitical event, likely involving terrorism or military affairs.

3. Mars squares Pluto on May 13, but is in effect from May 9 to 13, marking these five days with political, military, and corporate showdowns. Enemies square off using hardball tactics. Only the strongest survive. Since these two planets connect Sagittarius and Pisces, religious strife becomes the global brain's main headache.

4. Neptune turns retrograde on May 24 in Aquarius while quincunx (150º) the U.S. Neptune. This double Neptune-influence emphasizes scandals, lost causes, fraud, and disillusionment. Watch for major developments in the oil and pharmaceutical industries. Fast-moving Mercury trines Neptune while conjunct the U.S. Mars on May 22, leading to big developments in the U.S. occupation of Iraq and/or with Iran.

5. The Sun forms an octile (45º) to Venus on May 29, but is an active vector during the entire last week of May. This influence opens the door for peacemaking gestures, and is especially favorable for women and celebrities. This astro-event foreshadows the U.S. progressed Venus trine the Sun in November, so watch for the seeds of budding developments.

Drew Barrymore Lets her Freak Flag Fly

Gracing the cover of this week's People magazine as the "Most Beautiful" person of the year, actress Drew Barrymore waxed philosophically about the honor: "Happy people are beautiful. They become like a mirror, and reflect that happiness." Currently adding to her happiness is that her romantic comedy Lucky You opens nationwide on May 4, and that she's found new love with director Spike Jonze.

Drew Barrymore was born (February 22, 1975; 11:51 am; Culver City, CA) with her Pisces Sun conjunct Pallas, the asteroid known as the Goddess of Wisdom. Also residing in the blissful sign of Pisces is a conjunction of the happy planets Venus and Jupiter, which is given emotional support from the trine to her Moon in Cancer, and energized by the sextile to Mars in Capricorn.

Drew hasn't always been so happy**, as evidenced by her Moon's conjunction with heavy-duty Saturn. Also, her Pisces Sun square Neptune led her to wallow in drugs and alcohol during her teen years. However, as she grew older and wiser, she adapted to the demands of Saturn, and allowed her multiple personalities free expression. Her Pisces Sun trine independent Uranus is most often projected as her Hippy Philosopher.

This philosophic side is underscored by the placement of Mercury, her chart ruler, in the ninth house of religion and philosophy. With Mercury in the free-wheeling sign of Aquarius, she naturally assumes a more eccentric view of life. As People hit newsstands last week, Venus and Jupiter were happily conjunct her Ascendant and Descendant. She did admit it "made my peacock feathers shine in the golden-hour light and extend to the heavens."
