Uranus and Pluto in 2012

Last week, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (PCC) reported that hundreds of millions of people living in Africa and Southeast Asia will soon face hunger, disease, and water shortages due to global warming. The report notes that the U.S. and Western Europe together emit two-thirds of the pollution that causes global warming, but generally have the resources to manage any extreme weather-related problems.

The PCC report arrives as transiting Uranus traverses the middle degrees of Pisces, an area that activates the epochal Uranus-Pluto conjunction of 1965-66. Uranus is now awakening some of the paradigm-shifting breakthroughs that began back then, including civil rights, the understanding of ecosystems, feminism, and most notably, the Aquarian concept of one people living on one planet.

What made that outer planet conjunction particularly challenging was that Saturn in Pisces (regional authority, status quo, Piscean religions) opposed Uranus-Pluto in Virgo. Now, as transiting Uranus hits that 1966 polarity, people living in places like Bangladesh and Kenya -- who contribute the least to global warming, but will suffer the most -- can only hope for more planetary awareness.

Transiting Uranus is raising awareness of some of the issues that took root in the 1960s. However, to really shake up the Saturnian influences that control most of our world's institutions, it will probably take some major natural or weather-related catastrophes that only Uranus-Pluto alignments can bring. Uranus and Pluto make their next dynamic aspect in 2012, a time that, synchronistically , corresponds to the end of the Mayan calendar.

Pluto Sabotages Don Imus

On April 4, radio talk show host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos", an incredibly insensitive remark that got him fired from his CBS gig and sparked a frenzied outcry across the nation. Imus, who earned his corporate backers some $50 million annually, had long been known for his sarcastic wit and harsh comments, but this time he crossed the line.

Imus was born with a powerful Sun-Pluto conjunction in the entertainment sign of Leo (July 23, 1940; Riverside, CA; time unknown), a combination that allows him to dramatize the taboo desires and passions of the masses. Since his Sun-Pluto is also conjunct the communication planet Mercury, he can channel collective undercurrents through his preferred medium, radio. Imus identifies (Sun) with his penetrating commentaries (Mercury-Pluto).

Imus has Mars in Leo, giving him plenty of self-confidence and a sense of mission. The problematic side of this placement comes from the square to his Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Taurus. Mars-Saturn aspects are sometimes associated with mean-spiritedness and even cruelty, and when philosophic Jupiter is factored in, the conflicted psyche can manifest as morally questionable behavior.

With his Sun conjunct Pluto, transiting Pluto takes on extra significance in shaping his life path. As last week’s controversy unfolded, transiting Pluto at 28° Sagittarius was forming a close trioctile (135° aspect) to both his Mars and Saturn. Pluto was also quincunx his Mercury, square his Ceres, and opposite Venus -- essentially activating the major dynamics in his horoscope. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that some observers say that Imus deserves a special place in hell, since Pluto is the God of the Underworld.

Uranus Brings Larry Birkhead Victory

Last week, Anna Nicole Smith's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead jubilantly exclaimed "I told you so!" when DNA evidence confirmed he was the father of Dannielynn. Although the child's birth certificate indicates Howard K. Stern is the father, Howard gave Larry a warm hug and said he can visit Dannielynn whenever he wants. Still on the horizon: custody over Dannielynn and fighting for a piece of the $1.6 billion inheritance.

Larry Birkhead (January 22, 1973; Louisville, KY; time unknown) was born with his Aquarius Sun closely sextile Ceres and Neptune, a favorable configuration for parenting. His Ceres-Neptune adds a great deal of compassion and empathy to the parenting process. However, in a man's chart, Ceres can often represent a maternal woman he's romantically involved with, and so naturally, his Ceres-Neptune is conjunct Anna Nicole's Sagittarius Sun.

The two first met in May 2004 as transiting Uranus (the ruler of his Aquarius Sun) formed a square to his Ceres-Neptune and her Sun. Over the following year, they lived together, but had what must be called an "open relationship", as transiting Uranus was then squaring his Juno, his partnership asteroid. Dannielynn was conceived on New Year's Eve 2005 under the continuing influence of this erratic Uranus transit.

Birkhead's chart features a challenging Mars-Saturn opposition, which periodically throws him into pitched battles. Transiting Uranus has been squaring this polarity since Dannielynn was born, and this corresponds to the difficult court scenes he's had to endure. Last week, when he declared victory, transiting Uranus had completed its first passage through his Mars-Saturn, and was now exactly sextile his North Node, which is blessed with conjunctions to both Venus and Jupiter. More to come!
