Stock Market Jitters

Last Tuesday the Dow dropped a stunning 416 points, or 3.29 percent of its total value in one day. This was the worst percentage decline since March 24, 2003. The Nasdaq's drop was also precipitous, and not since December 9, 2002 had investors experienced such a drop in this tech-heavy sector. By week's end, stocks were still gyrating, making investors extra wary.

A number of astrologers have pointed out that last week's huge collapse took place exactly as transiting Saturn and Neptune opposed each other. It makes sense: big market swings take place during big celestial events. However, some astrologers noticed that this was the second of the Saturn-Neptune oppositions, and so why didn't the market collapse during the first occurrence in August 2006?

Tracking and forecasting market conditions is a difficult task for the financial astrologer, but can be made easier with the use of the correct national horoscope*. In my opinion, the beneficial influence of Jupiter protected Americans during the first Saturn-Neptune astro-event. As I wrote at the end of June 2006, "Jupiter turns direct - (July 5-6) while conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant (orb 0º23'), promising an eventful few days, national benefits, and a brighter outlook."

In fact, the U.S. markets have done nothing but go up since that extremely favorable Jupiter station. Now that Jupiter is less of a factor, the more negatively trending Saturn-Neptune influence can have its way. Also, transiting Pluto in the U.S. second house of national assets is a perilous risk factor, since it's in the same degree zone as Saturn was when the markets crashed in 1929 and 1987.

Rudolph Giuliani Woos Conservatives

Last Friday the leading Republican candidates for president addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, as they vied for this key group's support. The top-tier candidates had a tough sell, since they are all relatively left-leaning for the conservative movement - including Rudy Giuliani, who now leads McCain in national polls. As Mitt Romney complained, "he is pro-choice; he is pro-gay marriage, and anti-gun."

Giuliani's Sun-Uranus conjunction (May 28, 1944; 11:52 am**; New York City) makes him an exciting candidate to watch, and in Gemini, gives him an edge with the media. This combination happens to align with the U.S. Uranus, so that he personifies a significant American archetype. This Uranian archetype is technologically-savvy, and keenly attuned to the spirit of war, since it's aligned with the first-magnitude star Aldebaran.

Giuliani is focusing on his record as a crime-stopping mayor, and promises to be tough on terrorists. This strategy fits his powerful Mars-Pluto conjunction, which is harmoniously connected to his Sun by a sextile. And if his 11:52 am birth time is correct**, then his Mars-Pluto is found in the twelfth house - the ideal location to investigate the seedy underworld of crime and terrorism.

The main problem with Giuliani's candidacy, from a political astrology perspective, is that he has no natal or progressed planets in the 25-degree zone. He has no overwhelming connection with the American people and their security needs, as symbolized by the U.S. Moon at 25 degrees Aquarius. The most popular item at last week's conference was a"Rudy McRomney" button, reflecting how the GOP has yet to find a winner.

Prince Harry Goes to War

Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, will soon be deployed near Basra, where his fellow Brits have helped secure the southern half of Iraq. A recent graduate of a prestigious military academy, Harry will be the first royal to see action since Prince Andrew flew a helicopter in the 1982 Falkland Islands War.

Prince Harry was born with his Sun in duty-oriented Virgo (September 15, 1984; 4:20 pm; London) and responsible, serious Capricorn Rising. These placements stand in stark contrast to what we know about Harry so far - that he loves to party, smoke pot, and romance the girls. But Capricorns get stronger as they get older, and the expression of the Sun sign takes a while to understand and express.

As a young man, Harry's definitive planet is Mars, which is found in playful, adventurous Sagittarius. Mars here sextiles pleasure-seeking Venus and is conjunct reckless Uranus. Transiting Jupiter was conjunct his Venus and sextile his Mars when, in January 2005, he wore a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party. With Jupiter's expansive influence, he meant it to be entertaining.

However, transiting Pluto was squaring his Sun, and he learned a major life lesson - he offended many people and apologized for his stunt. Now transiting Uranus is heading into a square with his Mars, and he's determined to see action. As he says, "There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country."

* Those with decent astrology software can cross-check the transits during the previous calamitous drops (including those mentioned in the lead paragraph) against the Scorpio Rising U.S. horoscope (July 4, 1776; 2:21 pm; Philadelphia) to verify the tell-tale correlations, especially to the Ascendant and Moon.

** Giuliani's birth time, provided in this column previously as 11:52 am, has no known source, and must be rated DD. Typical of the current Mercury retrograde phase, I wrongly assumed it was from astrodatabank, but I've misplaced where I got this data.
