Global Warming Report

For the first time, the IPCC - a UN group of scientists and representatives from 113 governments - unanimously concluded that global warming is unequivocally man-made, and an existing and worsening threat. A UN spokesperson said "February 2 will be remembered as the date when uncertainty was removed as to whether humans had anything to do with climate change on this planet."

Astrologically, the sudden agreement among the world's scientists arrived as transiting Ceres and Uranus were forming a conjunction, an event that happens only once every five years. Ceres has strong connections with the environmental movement due to its care-taking function, and this is especially true when connected to the outer planets. Uranus represents the breakthrough scientific perspective.

In the broader sense, this report resonates with Neptune opposite Saturn, an aspect that becomes exact this month. We can think of Neptune in Aquarius as the sense or vision (Neptune) of networks of human activities (Aquarius). Neptune knows no borders, just as carbon dioxide emissions respect no borders. The challenge of organizing a collective response to our stressed-out ecosystems is diffused under Neptune's influence.

Saturn's opposition to Neptune points out the problem, lays blame on our collective industrial practices, and warns of dire consequences unless immediate action is taken. Saturn is above all pragmatic, and in Leo, asserts its authority unilaterally. However, at our present evolutionary state, no global authority exists that could implement the necessary changes. Only the United States, which emits 25 percent of our planet's greenhouse gases, could set the example, or organize a global response.

The Next President

One of the most significant trends in American politics is that all recently-elected Presidents have precise aspects to the U.S. Moon - either natally or by secondary progression, and often both. Seeing Bush's close link to the U.S. Moon in 2004 was how this astrologer was one of only a handful who correctly forecast he would be re-elected. What about the 2008 campaign?

Among the Democrats, all of the top-tier candidates have favorable prospects when considering their general ties to the U.S. horoscope, but Hillary Clinton's chart (October 26, 1947; 8:00 am; Chicago) has the most favorable connections to the U.S. Moon*. When considering the traditional planets, Hillary's Sun has only one aspect, and that's an out-of-sign trine to Uranus. Her Uranus at 25º Gemini also forms a harmonious trine to the U.S. Moon at 25º Aquarius.

Now that Ceres has become a player in our solar system, more astrologers are considering this "dwarf planet" in the horoscope. Hillary's Ceres opposes her Sun, and is found in the 6th house of health. Ceres, naturally associated with caretaking, is what propels her interest in health care programs. By secondary progression, her Ceres is now at 25º Aries, where it's sextile to the U.S. Mooqn.

As 2008 comes into view, Hillary's progressed Ceres gets closer to the exact sextile, and by the November election, it's only 0º08' from the U.S. Moon. This indicates that Ceres will be instrumental in setting her agenda, both as a mother and as a health care reformer. Factor in that her progressed Sun forms a success-oriented trine to her Midheaven in 2009, and one can only conclude that she is strongly favored to become the next U.S. President.

Tara Conner, Miss USA

Last Wednesday in an interview with Today host Matt Lauer, Miss USA Tara Connor admitted to using cocaine and being a "functional alcoholic". The controversial beauty queen just came out of re-hab following a scandal in December, when she was publicly chastised for her hard-partying ways. Tara has been winning beauty contests since she was four, and drinking alcohol since she was fourteen.

Tara Connor was born with her Sun and Venus in the free-spirited sign of Sagittarius (December 18, 1985; Russell Springs, KY; time unknown). Like many celebrities and beauties, her Venus is well-aspected, most notably, by a conjunction with Uranus, which gives an aura of excitement. Her Venus is also favorably enhanced by a sextile to Jupiter, which promises success, popularity, and prosperity.

Venus-Uranus in Sagittarius is compulsively driven to have fun, and dislikes schedules and protocol. Without a vision for the future, this combination withers under restrictions, and with the square to her Pisces Moon, this often meant escape through drugs and/or alcohol. When Tara was crowned Miss USA last April 21, transiting Pluto was right on her Sun. Since then her life has been fundamentally transformed, as befits Pluto - but not as she anticipated.

In December, when the drinking and partying scandal erupted, transiting Pluto had returned to conjoin her Sun. Pluto - often associated with all the "re-" words - brought her rehabilitation. Tara's Sun happens to be aligned with the Galactic Center (at 26º Sagittarius), indicating that she can act as a powerful channel for human evolution, if she gets her act together. Transiting Pluto will return to her Sun toward the end of 2007, giving her one more chance to turn her life around.

* Obama's natal Uranus and progressed Venus oppose the U.S. Moon, but this aspect wanes after July 2007. Among Republicans, John McCain's progressed Jupiter is sextile the U.S. Moon. For more on Hillary Clinton, see www.neptunecafe.com.
