Top Five Astro-Events for February

1. Saturn and Neptune oppose each other on February 28. The second of three contacts between these two outer planets dominates all geopolitical developments throughout February, pitting the practical against the ideal, those in power versus the nebulous wishes of the collective. Utopian ideals clash with harsh realities, democracy versus authoritarianism.

2. Juno squares the U.S. Pluto all month, making exact squares on the 3rd and 24th. Juno here represents the emerging power of women in business and politics, as they collectively challenge the powers that be (Pluto). Watch for developments concerning gay marriage. In the U.S. 12th house, Juno may also bring terrorist actions.

3. Mars activates the U.S. Mercury-Pluto opposition from February 17 to 22, marking a phase when American military, political, and corporate power is most actively asserting itself against perceived enemies. Legal showdowns, surgical strikes, and business takeovers are likely. The war of words intensifies, while emerging media stories could sharply divide the public.

4. The Sun conjoins Neptune on February 8 and then opposes Saturn on February 10, marking a three-day affair when the celestial confrontation between Saturn and Neptune becomes personified by individuals in the news. Bush's stance, "I'm the decision maker", faces Congressional challenges, especially from emerging presidential candidates claiming to speak for all Americans.

5. Mercury turns retrograde on February 13, and Juno turns retrograde on February 14, marking a distinct transition point for women in politics. Many stories appearing during the last two weeks of February may be politically motivated and not factual. Mercury retrograde in Pisces can deceive, spread misinformation, or send mixed messages.

From the Foreign Desk

Although NewsScope is written in the United States, last week brought a flurry of letters from around the global village. Several readers from the United Kingdom informed me that Britain's Astrological Society (www.astrologer.com/aanet/) has a celebrity database with an accurate birth time for David Beckham, which is 6:17 am. Coincidentally, the same information just appeared at www.astrodatabank.com.

A reader from Canada described some big science news coming out of the University of Alberta: a simple, inexpensive and relatively non-toxic drug named DCA may be a cure for virtually every form of cancer (see www.depmed.ualberta.ca/dca or the latest issue of Newsweek). This breakthrough was announced during the Jupiter-Uranus square, he said, which fulfilled one of the Top Five astro-events for January, as foreseen in NewsScope's December 25 issue.

From Denmark, a reader wondered how the Solar Eclipse over Iran influences the invasion-of-Iraq chart. "If this is serious astrology, wouldn't that chart be equally nasty?" Yes, unfortunately, the Solar Eclipse hits the Iraq War chart hard, falling right on the Sun. One might speculate on all kinds of scenarios involving the U.S. Iraq, and Iran, and most readily, about a sudden escalation of the conflict.

From Jordan, a budding astrologer asks about his Sun square Saturn, and "how to mitigate some of its severe circumstances". First, the Sun-Saturn combination is about getting serious with life, and urges the individual to make something of himself. To avoid stagnation and oppressive circumstances, one must struggle hard. Every horoscope is unique, but this correspondent's Pisces Sun squares Saturn in Sagittarius, perhaps indicating a strict religious upbringing that blocks expression of the True Self.

Ann Heche's Men

One of the sparkling attractions to TV's romantic drama Men in Trees is the on-screen chemistry between Ann Heche and her leading man, James Tupper. Last week, several reports emerged that the co-stars are having an off-screen romance, one that has become so heated that she left her husband and he left his wife. What's to become of these two?

Ann Heche* was born with her Sun in restless, dualistic Gemini (May 25, 1969; 4:51 pm; Aurora, OH), where it opposes Mars in adventurous Sagittarius. This combination fosters curiosity about new environments and people, and loves to talk and travel. With Libra Rising, Heche is a natural to play a relationship coach, especially since Venus, the chart ruler, is in the seventh house of relationships.

Rumors of her real-life romance with her co-star emerged last week during a Mercury-Neptune conjunction which trined her Libra Ascendant. Heche's Mars, signifying the men in her life, was recently squared by Uranus, the divorce planet, and she did just separate from her husband of five years. Then, transiting Jupiter was conjunct her Mars, bringing a new opportunity in the form of James Tupper (August 4, 1972).

His Mars in Leo is closely trine her Venus in Aries, which makes for fiery, dramatic romance, and is the best possible indicator for sexual compatibility. However, his Venus squares her 12th house Uranus, a combination that can lead to sudden attraction, but just as well, unexpected endings. Transiting Pluto is activating this interchange throughout 2007, which unfolds as spontaneous separations and reunions, just as they're playing it out on the TV show.

* NewsScope previously profiled Heche on September 4, 2001, when her book Call Me Crazy was published.
