Bad Omens over Iran

Last week, Chuck Hagel, Republican Senator from Nebraska, called Bush's proposed Iraq plan "the worst foreign policy blunder since Vietnam", as Condoleezza Rice was grilled before the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee. One of the central criticisms of the Bush plan was the potential for the war to expand into Iran, which was in sharp contrast to the Iraq Study Group's recommendations to engage Iran diplomatically.

Iran's horoscope (April 1, 1979; 3:00 pm; Tehran) features Mars in deceptive Pisces, where it conjoins Mercury. Mars here, as the symbol for the nation's military, prefers to act discreetly or undercover, or through agents. Over the past year, transiting Pluto has been squaring this Mercury-Mars conjunction, as Iran gave military and financial support to Hezbollah and Shiite troops in Iraq, plus (presumably) secretly developed its nuclear technology.

Last week's Mars-Pluto conjunction formed a close square to Iran's Mercury, as the Bush team put Iran on notice. Many astrologers noted the sudden appearance of the bright Comet McNaught during Bush's speech, which seemed to herald some huge disaster. Iran's progressed Mars clarifies the picture, and underscores the bellicose vibe coming out of Tehran. At the moment, Iran's progressed Mars at 17º Aries is forming an exact trine to its Leo Ascendant.

More significantly, this progressed Mars will soon oppose natal Pluto, which can be seen as a direct confrontation with enemies, and a fight to the death. Progressed Mars opposite Pluto is intensely hostile, and ready to go to any extreme to defeat the enemy. In the shorter term, the Solar Eclipse on March 19 is right on Iran's Mercury-Mars, and is yet another ill omen for this region.

Maliki Headed for a Fall?

President Bush's "new" strategy for Iraq sets the stage for some dramatic developments over the next two months, according to the horoscope for the invasion of Iraq on March 20, 2003 (5:35 am; Baghdad). This chart can be used to monitor American influence over Iraq and some of Iraq's most significant internal developments, having reliably marked major transitions over the last few years.

The Saturn-Pluto opposition aligned with the Midheaven describes the fundamental restructuring of Iraq, and indicates that Pluto transits lead to some of the most important changes. For example, Iraq's constitution was signed on October 15, 2005, as transiting Pluto formed its exact opposition to Saturn. Then, the Maliki government was formed during March 2006, as transiting Pluto turned retrograde while squaring Mercury.

The Sun in this chart is in the last degree of Pisces, and can be used as a symbol for Iraqi leadership. Saddam Hussein was captured on December 15, 2003 when transiting Mars was conjunct this chart's Sun, and he was hanged on December 30 under further activation of the Sun*. On April 22, 2006, Nouri Maliki was selected as Prime Minister, as transiting Jupiter was precisely trine the Ascendant.

Over the next two months, Pluto heads into a square with this chart's Sun. Pluto turns retrograde on March 31 while only 0º06' from the exact square, pointing to a critical phase in the Iraq war, and especially for Maliki's government. Adding to the disastrous celestial portents is the progressed Moon's conjunction with Pluto on February 28, and then the Midheaven on April 2. It appears that Maliki is headed for a political fall, or possibly an assassination, during this interval.

David Beckham Signs for $250 Million

David Beckham Signs for $250 MillionDavid Beckham Signs for $250 MillionIn what is likely the biggest deal in sports history, soccer superstar David Beckham is coming to America to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy, where he's expected to earn some $250 million over the next five years. Beckham said he's looking for a new challenge, having played at the top of his game in Europe for the last 15 years.

David Beckham was born with his Sun in financially-savvy Taurus and his Moon in team-oriented Aquarius (May 2, 1975; 10:00 am**; Leytonstone, UK). His fame and celebrity has been celestially supported by Jupiter in his tenth house of profession, where it's conjunct the Part of Fortune. Jupiter here is enhanced by a trine to Neptune, but challenged by hard aspects from Saturn and Pluto, which have made him a tabloid favorite.

Beckham's Mars is placed in elusive Pisces, where it's strengthened by a trine to Saturn, and given a touch of recklessness by a close trioctile (135º) to Uranus. Beckham's "soccer" style - following the Mars influences - is not so much a direct attack, but one that's tricky, hard to track. The film Bend it like Beckham is named after his free-kick style that arches the ball around defenders.

Currently, Beckham plays for the Spanish team Real Madrid, but since this deal was announced, he's been benched. Transiting Uranus is heading for a conjunction with his Mars on March 22, so he may come to the States before his scheduled arrival in June. With his progressed Mars coming to Jupiter over the next year, Beckham's charm and style is bound to put U.S. soccer on the world map.

* This measurement is more complex, but reflective of the importance of the Sun in this chart: tertiary progressed (P3) Ascendant and North Node were conjunct at 29º Taurus, exactly sextile the natal Sun, while transiting Pluto was exactly, to-the-minute, opposite P3 Saturn. Maliki came to power under a P3 New Moon, and a P3 triple conjunction between Ceres, Mercury, and the Ascendant.

** This time comes from astrologer Tina Botnan, who tells me the source of the 10:00 am time is "from a fan who got it from a publication in Britain." This very indirect, unnamed source means the data is rated DD. However, note that Pallas is conjunct the Midheaven, and the progressed Moon conjunct the two as this deal is announced.
