Saturn Brings Sea Change over Iraq
Republican Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon gave an impassioned
speech last week, with a few sound bites being widely reported: "I,
for one, am at the end of my rope when it comes to supporting a
policy that has our soldiers patrolling the streets in the same
way, being blown up by the same bombs day after day. That's absurd.
It may even be criminal."
Astrologically, this sea change in the Iraq policy corresponds
to Saturn turning retrograde (as described here two weeks ago).
What makes this particular Saturn station so powerful is that it's
taking place while exactly opposite the U.S. Moon. Senator Smith's
comment represents a break within the Republican Party, underscoring
the bipartisan ISG report and Robert Gates' confirmation testimony
that the situation in Iraq is rapidly deteriorating.
Saturn's heavy influence over the public mood (symbolized by the
U.S. Moon) makes the options seem bleak. President Bush has yet
to weigh in on the bipartisan ISG report, and is waiting to hear
from his generals. Meanwhile, transiting Mars is heading into a
square with his own Mars, indicating a conflict of wills. Bush
must now realize that he can no longer say "we're making progress".
Bush is expected to address the nation about the shifting policy
in Iraq in about two weeks. This speech will take place as transiting
Chiron is conjunct his Descendant and opposing his Mercury-Pluto.
Chiron, most commonly known as the "wounded healer",
is urging Bush to recognize the pain and suffering being caused
by his rigid policies (Mercury-Pluto). However, Chiron, in American
politics, also represents the military, and he may promote the
military report that is now being formulated.
De Beers' Blood Diamonds
Jane Fonda was decked out in diamond earrings at last Thursday's
Hollywood premier of Blood Diamond. "They're all conflict-free," she
explained, and added, "It just so happens that my friend's movie
is coming out and my son is getting engaged, so I have to deal with
diamonds." The grisly film* is a thinly-disguised indictment
of De Beers, the South African diamond mining company.
In traditional astrology, Venus rules diamonds, but in political
astrology, one might refer to the foundation of DeBeers on March
13, 1888 (Johannesburg, South Africa, noon) to explore the modern
diamond business. The horoscope's ruling planet is Mercury, which
is found in fantasy-oriented Pisces and squaring mind-altering Pluto.
This combination set the stage for the 20th century's greatest advertising
campaign.
De Beers' Venus squares Juno, the marriage asteroid. In 1938, as
De Beers' progressed Juno formed a harmonious trine to natal Venus,
diamonds and marriage were linked for the first time. The slogan "Diamonds
are forever" changed the way we think about the marriage proposal.
Diamonds and romance are now inseparable, since virtually every proper
engagement must be accompanied by a diamond ring.
De Beers' sharp Mars-Saturn square reflects the company's desire
to control the world's diamond markets. This troublesome aspect can
also be associated with war-torn Sierra Leone, which became independent
on April 27, 1961 as transiting Saturn was exactly opposite De Beers'
Saturn. In early 2006, transiting Pluto was squaring De Beers' Pisces
Sun when filming began for Blood Diamond. Now that transiting Pluto
is opposing De Beers' Chiron, the giant corporation is concerned
that global sales will be hurt (wounded) as the movie debuts.
Dakota Fanning Comes of Age
Dakota Fanning Comes of AgeAt twelve years old, child-actress
Dakota Fanning already has a resume other actors would die for.
Besides numerous TV parts, she's appeared on the big screen in
Sweet Home Alabama, The Cat in the Hat, and War of the Worlds.
Her most recent films include Charlotte's Web (out now), and the
controversial Hounddog, which will be shown at the Sundance Film
Festival in January.
Dakota Fanning was born with a Sun-Saturn conjunction in Pisces
(February 23, 1994; Conyers, GA; time unknown), a combination that
bestows immense responsibilities and maturity. As early as 2002,
she was getting extraordinary reviews, like this one that reflects
her Sun-Saturn in Pisces: "she has the perfect sort of otherworldly
look about her, an enchanting young actress called upon to carry
a great weight."
Dakota was born during the epochal Uranus-Neptune conjunction in
Capricorn. An unusual number of talented and precocious children
under the spell of this culture-shaping dynamic are here to transform
social expectations. They carry a touch of mysticism and unique
understandings of the world, but since the conjunction is in traditional
Capricorn, these artists work within the system.
Quite possibly, Dakota will remain a reputable actress when she
becomes an adult. Her Venus-Jupiter trine brings her plenty of
fame and fortune, but with her prominent Saturn, she will feel
uncomfortable resting on her laurels. Dakota will be in the spotlight
next month when she attends Sundance, as transiting Uranus conjuncts
her Venus and transiting Saturn opposes her Mars. This combination
represents a coming-of-age phase before she becomes a teenager.
