James Baker III, America's Fix-It Man?
Expectations are running high for the Iraq Study Group, co-chaired
by Republican James Baker and Democrat Lee Hamilton. The bi-partisan
panel meets this week to begin preparing a new strategy, one that
addresses the military, political, and economic issues surrounding
Iraq. The spotlight is on Baker, who famously argued against Saddam's
ouster in 1991, and is now playing the role of elder statesman.
James Baker was born during a New Moon in Taurus (April 28, 1930;
7:31 am; Houston, TX), giving him a practical, no-nonsense approach
to all his endeavors. The Sun and Moon are found in the twelfth
house and trine Neptune, a double influence that emphasizes a transpersonal
sensitivity to geopolitical undercurrents. With Mercury and Venus
also in financially-savvy Taurus, Baker must have felt right at
home as Reagan's Secretary of the Treasury.
Baker has several extremely close ties to the U.S. Scorpio Rising
horoscope, allowing him to personify the national needs at critical
times. These include his Sun at 7º Taurus (opposite the U.S. Scorpio
Ascendant), and his Ascendant at 8º Gemini (which coincides with
the U.S. Uranus). Also, his Venus, the ruler of all his Taurus
planets, forms an exact trine to the U.S. Pluto, the nation's ruling
planet.
A few minor asteroids help paint the picture. The asteroid Sphinx
sits right on Baker's Ascendant, accounting for his tight-lipped,
mysterious and inscrutable manner. Baker's Neptune is conjunct
the asteroid Panacea, so this complex is associated with the current
expectations in Iraq. This week, as the panel meets, transiting
Jupiter forms an exact square to Baker's Neptune, inflating hopes
for a cure-all remedy.
Top 5 Astro
Events for December
1. The Full Moon December 4 coincides with Saturn's
retrograde station on the 5th, bringing a sea change in geopolitical
developments. Since this Saturn opposes the U.S. Moon, U.S. authority
begins to recede, a shift brought about by popular demand. The American
mood is dark and pessimistic, due largely to Iraq and the falling
housing market. Expect transportation and communication breakdowns.
2. Transiting Mercury, Mars and Jupiter make a triple conjunction
from December 9 to 11 in early Sagittarius. This high-energy combination
fosters plenty of action on all levels, especially military, but
also on the diplomatic front. The generals have their say, while
ordinary people can be seen moving faster and more impatiently. Watch
out for accidents.
3. Transiting Ceres and Saturn oppose each other, exact on December
13, but a key dynamic from the 9th to 14th. Ceres-related themes
headline the news: birth control issues, the loss of favorite Americans,
environmental or global-warming reports, and food supply problems.
Severe storms or other natural disasters may require relief agencies.
4. Transiting Sun and Pluto are conjunct on December 18, with the
New Moon following on the 20th. This important alignment marks these
three days as an historic ending and new beginning. Watch for dramatic
developments in Middle East affairs, including U.S. involvement in
Iraq. These are power days, when individuals take action for their
constituents.
5. Transiting Neptune aspects the U.S. Venus on the 26th, and is
a strong influence throughout December. Neptune-to-Venus is a highly
romantic vibration, especially in the sentimental holiday season
when family values, gatherings, and charitable giving may dominate
media stories and advertising campaigns. For most people, expectations
are higher than the reality.
Michael Crichton's "Next"
Master storyteller
Michael Crichton's latest techno-thriller is upon us. The writer
who brought us The Andromeda Strain, Congo, and Jurassic Park
presents the latest genetic-engineering mystery, Next, which
like his previous best-sellers, features science gone awry.
The publisher, Harper-Collins, is making news itself by promoting
Next via a fake genetic product site called nextgencode.com,
which - like Crichton's novels - cleverly confuses
fact and fiction.
Michael Crichton's horoscope (October 23, 1942; 11:55 pm; Chicago)
features his Scorpio Sun square Pluto, a combination that recognizes
metamorphic or transformative changes as an intrinsic process
of life. Pluto is found in the creative sign of Leo and near
his Ascendant, giving him a strong drive to make an impact
on the world around him. Pluto is strongly supported by a sextile
from Mercury, the writer's planet.
Crichton's Mercury is found in the third house of writing,
along with Neptune, which governs fantasy. Both Mercury and
Neptune are trine to Saturn and Uranus in the communication
sign of Gemini. In addition, his Jupiter is conjunct the U.S.
Mercury, while Venus and Mars are exactly squaring the U.S.
Mercury. What else could he do but write?
In the branch of astrology known as Evolutionary Astrology,
Crichton's Uranus square the lunar node axis is interpreted
as sudden and unexpected catastrophes that change the life's
direction. In Crichton's case, it's possible that he's personally
protected, since his Uranus is also harmoniously sextile the
Ascendant. However, Uranus, as the ruler of new technologies,
is the perfect symbol for generating worst-case scenarios out
of genetic manipulation.
