Bobby

Shortly after midnight on June 5, 1968, Bobby Kennedy was fatally shot by Sirhan Sirhan. That night, Kennedy and his supporters had been celebrating his victory in the California primary, but when he died 26 hours later, the hope of soon ending the Vietnam War also passed away. History and Hollywood intersect this week, as Emilio Estevez's independent film Bobby is released nationwide.

Robert F. Kennedy was born with his Sun in Scorpio and his Moon in Capricorn (November 20, 1925; 3:11 pm; Brookline, MA), an ambitious combination that was given early fulfillment when his brother appointed him to be the nation's Attorney General in 1961. RFK's Mars in Scorpio sits right on the Descendant, a position that helped him fight organized crime, but also made him a target.

The ruthless drive linked to Mars in Scorpio was tempered by his Sun square Neptune. The compassion associated with this aspect didn't come out until after his brother was assassinated. By the time transiting Neptune was squaring his natal Neptune, RFK was on the 1968 presidential campaign trail, and becoming known for his vision, sensitivity toward the less fortunate, and hope for the future - all Neptunian qualities.

Among the many transits that were forming exact connections to his natal planets when RFK died, Neptune was one of the closest. Transiting Neptune at 24º Scorpio was exactly squaring natal Neptune at 24º Leo, a configuration that also aligns with the U.S. Moon at 25º Aquarius. This set-up is currently being activated by transiting Saturn at 25º Leo, as the star-studded movie Bobby opens and the nation seeks a visionary champion to end the war in Iraq.

Mercury's Eclipsing of the Sun

Several readers wrote in about the passing of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist William Styron. Here's one: "I thought you nailed it when I saw that Styron had passed. He's a giant in true literary circles. I just don't see Bradley as being a 'literary' celebrity. Journalists aren't usually considered literary types! I wonder what Styron's chart looked like when he died?"

William Styron was born on June 11, 1925 with his Gemini Sun conjunct the U.S. Mars. A quote is posted above the door at his studio: "Be regular and orderly in your life so that you may be violent and original in your work." Styron's best-known novels may all be considered to be violent and original, and reflect his Sun's square to Uranus, and the close connection to the U.S. Mars.

This column's prediction that a major literary figure would die was based on Mercury's eclipsing of the Sun, and how these two aligned with the U.S. national horoscope. Mercury governs writers, and if we factor in Mercury's square to Neptune, which rules the film industry, Ed Bradley's death also fits the symbolism quite well. Styron's Saturn at 8ºScorpio is exactly conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, which is where Mercury turned direct last Friday.

Economist and Nobel prize-winner Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912) also passed away during this Mercury transit. With his Sun located at 8º Leo, his personality likewise helped shape the national identity. We can add Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler's death to this sequence. His birth on April 1, 1929 features Chiron at 8º Scorpio. All these charts were activated by Mercury's eclipse and station on the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant.

Cheryl Burke, MVP

From the Feedback Dept.: "I am interested in the two-time champion Cheryl Burke's chart. What can you say about her and Emmitt Smith and their surprising win?" This season's Dancing with the Stars extravaganza was won by professional dancer Cheryl Burke and NFL star Emmitt Smith. Last season*, Cheryl guided Nick Lachey to the championship, and thus has become known as the MVP - Most Valued Partner.

Cheryl Burke was born with her Taurus Sun opposite Mars (May 12, 1984; San Francisco; time unknown), a combative combination that excels at competitive sports. With her Venus also in earthy Taurus and trine opulent Jupiter, Cheryl carries a sensuous, magnetic aura that becomes magnificently radiant in the flamboyant ballroom dancing costumes. Venus-Jupiter brings her luck, wealth, and popularity.

Cheryl's Venus opposes Saturn, so that she is constantly aware of being judged for style and flair. Yet another planetary polarity is her Mercury opposite Pluto, and this aspect endows her with keen powers of observation, enabling her to transform her clumsy celebrity partners into graceful artists. So many oppositions in a chart is ideally suited for dancing.

Emmitt Smith (May 14, 1969; Pensacola, FL; time unknown) was born with his Taurus Sun trine Jupiter and Pluto, giving him immense personal resources to succeed at whatever he sets his mind to. His Venus trine Mars gives the SuperBowl champion sex appeal and grace, which is facilitated by his Sun opposite ethereal Neptune. Last Wednesday, transiting Saturn was square Emmitt's and Cheryl's Suns when this longshot couple came in first, so we know they had to work hard for this trophy.
