Ted Haggard's Fall from Grace

Last Friday Pastor Ted Haggard resigned from his leadership of the National Association of Evangelicals in response to allegations that he engaged in homosexual relations with a male escort named Mike Jones. Jones said that he outed Haggard because of Haggard's political support for a ban on same-sex marriage, while at the same time Haggard was doing exactly what he was preaching against.

Ted Haggard was born with his Sun in the family-values sign of Cancer (June 27, 1956; Indiana; time unknown), a position that is energetically promoted by the trine to Mars in faith-oriented Pisces. As the head of some 30 million evangelicals, Haggard set himself up as a role model with a wife and five kids, and Monday morning chats with President Bush.

Religious fundamentalism can often be found in hard aspects between Jupiter and Pluto. In Haggard's case, he was born with a Jupiter-Pluto conjunction, which is aligned with the first-magnitude star Regulus. Regulus, found in the last degree of proud Leo, tends to puff things up to extremes, and with the square to Saturn in secretive, sexy Scorpio, any hypocrisy was bound to be exposed.

Hypocrisy is further expressed in this chart's duality, which includes Mars in Pisces, the sign of emotional duality, square Mercury in Gemini, the sign of intellectual duality. This configuration is perfectly capable of speaking out of both sides of the mouth, a tendency activated recently by transiting Uranus conjunct natal Mars. Since his progressed Sun is heading into Pluto, and transiting Pluto will soon oppose his Venus, Haggard's fall from grace is just beginning.

Chaos Merges with Astrology

The emerging paradigm of chaos theory is redefining many academic disciplines, and fits well into a sophisticated astrological model. The terminology and concepts used by "chaoticians" can readily be applied by astrologers, especially fractals, tipping points, and strange attractors. For example, the patterns that individuals play out over and over again can be seen as the manifestation of strange attractors in the natal horoscope.

Artistic fractals have reached widespread popularity, but can be more precisely defined as the visual patterns that are formed at the edge of chaos. While these patterns are generally seen in three-dimensional space, they can also be experienced along the timeline as progressions. The "day equals a year" formula is merely a fractal projection along the timeline, and as Einstein demonstrated, space and time are the same.

Bernadette Brady's new book, Astrology, A Place in Chaos, postulates that astrology belongs to neither the scientific, cause and effect model, nor the spiritually-oriented model of our collective reality. The middle way is through chaos, where we are all part of a relationship pattern and co-creating the web of life. These interdependent dynamics can't be plotted using linear models, but can be by using chaos and astrology.

Changes at key moments in one's life can result in huge changes down the line. In chaos theory, this is known as the butterfly effect, as when a butterfly flapping its wings in East Africa can eventually generate a hurricane in Florida. Similarly, in astrology, major life changes can be co-created with the surrounding universe with a change of attitude or direction at key moments. These moments are known as tipping points, and Brady's breakthrough book shows how astrology can light the way.

Tom Cruise: All the World's a Stage

MGM announced last Thursday that Tom Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner have taken a substantial financial stake in United Artists. Wagner will take over as CEO and Cruise will star in and produce big budget films. Last August Cruise was fired from Paramount for his "unprofessional behavior", but now, Cruise shifts into a leadership role of the one-time artist-run studio.

Tom Cruise was born with Neptune rising (July 3, 1962; 3:06 pm*; Syracuse, NY), the planet that rules film. Neptune is conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, so that the actor naturally portrays the heroic images and myths that Americans cherish. Neptune's square to hard-nosed Saturn gives a practical facet to the spiritual yearnings of Neptune in Scorpio, which manifests as Scientology.

Cruise has a powerful 10th house, the house of business and professional image. In this chart, the North Node is exactly conjunct the Leo Midheaven, naturally drawing Cruise away from his troubled roots (shown by Saturn conjunct the South Node in the 4th house), and into a dramatic professional career. Transiting Saturn is currently in his 10th house, challenging him to take on more responsibility in the film business.

Venus is the natural ruler of women, and in the house, reflects his professional relationship with starlets. In Cruise's chart, Venus also rules the 7th house of partnerships. Last week, when the Cruise and Wagner deal was announced, Cruise's progressed Venus was exactly, to-the-minute, sextile his North Node. On November 18, Cruise and his love interest, Katie Holmes, will marry as Mercury turns direct while exactly squaring his North Node.

* This time must be rated "DD" for dirty data, and comes from Noel Tyl. He tells me he can't remember where it came from, but assures me that it holds up, and I have to agree.
