Bob Woodward's State of Denial

Bob Woodward's latest book, State of Denial, was just published, and is creating tremendous buzz among talking heads. Woodward's sterling reputation allowed him access to the inner workings of the administration, including the startling fact that Bush relies on Henry Kissinger's advice. "Kissinger's fighting the Vietnam War again, because in his view, the problem in Vietnam is we lost our will," says Woodward.

Bob Woodward was born (March 26, 1943; 6:35 pm; Geneva, Illinois) with his Aries Sun exactly trine Pluto, a combination that excels at research and investigation. With his Moon in the third house opposing a Saturn-Uranus conjunction in the ninth house, his career focus naturally tends toward journalism and publishing. Neptune conjunct his Ascendant gives him a keen intuition and sensitivity to political undercurrents.

As a young reporter, he was assigned to cover a petty burglary at the Watergate Hotel in June 1972 when he was experiencing his first Saturn Return. Also at the time, transiting Pluto was exactly conjunct his Ascendant, located at 29º Virgo. Pluto here transformed his life, and we know now that the Watergate incident eventually led to the downfall of President Nixon, as Woodward sensed the cover-up that no one else suspected.

Woodward began writing his series on Bush at War shortly after 9/11 during his second Saturn Return, and the first one was published on November 21, 2002 as transiting Saturn reached his Midheaven. His critics say that Woodward had become a stenographer for the Bush administration, that he had lost his edge. That certainly cannot be said about this third book, which arrived just after the September 22 Solar Eclipse landed precisely on his Ascendant.

The HP Way

Hewlett-Packard's slogan "The HP Way" took on new meaning last week when the company's top brass were hauled before a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill. HP's chief legal counsel, ethics chief, and global security chief each pleaded the Fifth Amendment when asked to testify about an internal investigation, which had devolved into snooping into the private lives of its own directors.

Electrical engineers Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard founded their company on January 1, 1939 (noon, Palo Alto, California). The Capricorn Sun conjunct the partnership asteroid Juno reflects the business relationship that began with a coin toss to see whose name would be listed first. The Sun forms a supportive trine to the Moon and Uranus in stable Taurus, a practical combination that brings steady but sure growth.

Mars in HP's seventh house describes the aggressive competition the company would face over the years, especially since Mars opposes the Moon-Uranus conjunction. HP embarked on an innovative change in leadership when Carly Fiorina broke through the glass ceiling by becoming the CEO on July 23, 1999. At the time, transiting Saturn was exactly conjunct HP's Moon, while transiting Uranus was squaring the HP Moon.

Since HP's Moon was hit by the transiting Saturn-Uranus square, so was its Mars. Fiorina's leadership brought in-house fighting, which dramatically increased when she negotiated a merger with Compaq on May 3, 2002, as transiting Pluto was exactly conjunct HP's Mercury. Although Fiorina was forced out in February 2005, transiting Pluto went on to square natal Neptune, fostering a corporate culture of suspicion, betrayal, and sabotage.

Scarlett Johansson, International Film Star

Ever since Robert Redford cast her in The Horse Whisperer, Scarlett Johansson has become one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses. In addition to receiving a handful of Golden Globe nominations and several "sexiest woman alive" awards, the stunning blond has become the face for L'Oreal, the Calvin Klein perfume "Moment", and for Reebok's new workout clothes line, which is promoting her as a "world-renowned style icon".

Scarlett Johansson was born with her Sun in trendy Sagittarius (November 22, 1984; New York City, time unknown), and her Moon most likely in sexy Scorpio. Her Venus in reserved Capricorn gives her a maturity beyond her years, and tends to favor older men in the love department. This placement is tremendously enhanced by a conjunction with Jupiter, which attracts an abundance of opportunity, wealth, and luck.

Being so magnetic and fortunate, Scarlett could easily glide through life by relying on her natural beauty. However, her Mars squares Pluto, giving her relentless drive to follow her career path. Mars is in Aquarius, adding a humanitarian dimension to her activities, which have included working with U2 singer Bono in an anti-poverty campaign and supporting healthy eating habits in women.

Although virtually every director in Hollywood wants Scarlett to star in his next film, she doesn't quite resonate with American audiences. Astrologically, Scarlett doesn't have the planetary connections to the U.S. national horoscope, as do box office stars like Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts. However, transiting Jupiter will be conjunct her Sun in late November, when she may enjoy an extra jolt of fame and celebrity, especially as an international film star.
