Israel vs.
Radical Islam
Two weeks ago,
Israel's problem with Hamas was a local skirmish. Since then,
Hezbollah jumped into the fray, which led to an Israeli invasion
of Lebanon's key infrastructure, and in turn, is bringing the
possibility of war with Syria and Iran. The dramatic escalation
of the Middle East conflict was described in this column two
weeks ago, as seen from the perspective of Israel's national
horoscope.
Lebanon's national horoscope (November 22, 1943; 8:57 pm*; Beirut) reflects the
current conditions in its domestic arena. Transiting Pluto is exactly opposite
natal Saturn, which describes the foreign invader (Israel) attacking its airport
(Saturn in airy Gemini). Lebanon's inability to act can be seen in transiting
Uranus' opposition to Chiron and square to Mars, a condition that lasts into
next year. Also in effect is progressed Mars conjunct Uranus, indicating the
ongoing potential for huge military conflict.
Iran's horoscope (April 1, 1979; 3:00 pm; Tehran) shows parallel developments.
Transiting Pluto is in a long-term square with its natal Mercury-Mars conjunction
in Pisces, a position that fosters secret attacks, or through its agents, such
as Hezbollah. Most alarming is Iran's progressed Mars, which is heading into
an opposition with its natal Pluto over the coming year.
Each of these charts features the dangerous combination of progressed Mars and
Pluto transit, and Israel's chart underscores the same theme. Israel (May 14,
1948; 4:37 pm; Tel Aviv) has its progressed Mars at 26º Virgo, where it
heads into a square with expansive Jupiter over the coming year. At the same,
time transiting Pluto is conjunct Israel's Jupiter (and squaring progressed Mars).
The tenuous interface between Israel and radical Islam is reaching a critical
turning point. Only the most concerted international efforts can prevent all-out
war.
Mexico's Chaotic
Election, Part 2
An astrologer
from Mexico wrote in about last week's commentary on her country's
chaotic presidential election: "I found it very interesting,
even though it was short!" She adds that she's living
these days with great anxiety and uncertainty about the future,
and notes that Mercury turned retrograde right around the July
2 election. "Could the alleged results change in favor
of the other candidate?"
Mexico's widely respected election tribunal must validate results by August 31,
during which time Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune are forming a powerful T-square.
The immense celestial confrontation between these planets will undoubtedly be
reflected in political confrontations around the world, but especially in Mexico
where they align with key planets in the national horoscope. Looking at the two
leading candidates' personal charts helps clarify the situation.
Runner-up Lopez Obrador was born with his Sun in Scorpio (November 13, 1953;
Macuspana, Mexico; time unknown). Even though he officially lost by the thinnest
of margins, transiting Jupiter is in Scorpio now, and favors his campaign to
overthrow his opponent's victory based on massive voting fraud. Obrador's best
chance for ultimate success arrives in mid-October when transiting Jupiter is
conjunct his Sun.
However, the winning candidate, Felipe Calderon, was born with his Sun in Leo
(August 18, 1962; Morelia, Mexico; time unknown), which is where transiting Saturn
is now. The official winner takes office on December 1, and that happens to be
when transiting Saturn turns retrograde while right on Calderon's Sun. Authoritative
Saturn is supported by a powerful trine from transiting Pluto, so he will most
likely assume the presidency then.
Zinedine Zidane's
Curtain Call
A NewsScope
reader asks if astrology can explain why France's premier soccer
hero, Zinedine Zidane, head-butted an Italian player during
the final minutes of the World Cup. What was he thinking? Zinedine
had led his team to the finals, and this was the final match
of his career, his last few minutes before retiring from the
sport. He might have capped his career with glory, but it ended
in shame.
Zizou - as he is affectionately called in France - was born with
his Sun in emotional, family-oriented Cancer (June 23, 1972; 3:00 am; Marseille,
France**), and his Moon in intense, brooding Scorpio. The Sun has close aspects
to Jupiter, Neptune, and Ceres, making him a motivated, inspirational, and caring
team-leader. The Sun also squares Pluto, providing an instinctive element of
ruthlessness and compulsive behavior.
As in all great athletes' charts, Mars is prominently placed in his horoscope,
with a network of aspects to fortify his physical strength, courage, and boldness.
However, Mars under pressure can impulsively explode in anger, and such a condition
is required for a violent break out of character. The triggering mechanism at
the time of the incident (10:15 pm; Berlin) was transiting Mars conjunct his
progressed Mercury (orb 0º10').
Mercury-Mars symbolizes verbal (Mercury) conflict (Mars), and the actual cause,
according to interviews conducted after the match, was the Italian player's insults
to his mother and sister. Perhaps the most telling aspect, because it was the
closest, was transiting Chiron's trioctile (135º) to Venus (orb 0º00'),
his horoscope's ruling planet. Chiron-to-Venus often represents a surge of rage
due to wounded pride and hurt feelings.

Special Note: This first article on Israel makes a number of references to "progressed
Mars". Readers may be interested in a 5300 word article I wrote about progressed
Mars, what it means technically, and its significance in the U.S. horoscope as
it nears its retrograde station. The article appears as the cover story for Dell
Horoscope's September issue (available now at www.dellhoroscope.com <http://www.dellhoroscope.com> ),
and is titled "Five Years after 9/11, A Look forward and backward as Mars
Triggers the U.S. Horoscope".
