Jupiter Kills Zarqawi

In the steady stream of bad news coming out of Iraq, the death of Al-Qaeda leader al-Zarqawi* last Wednesday was roundly hailed as good news. Zarqawi was responsible for numerous acts of violence, not only against the Americans, but also as the chief instigator of the sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shiites. Meanwhile, learning from previous exuberance, President Bush remained cautiously optimistic.

Zarqawi's end fulfills the message of transiting Jupiter conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. The news was broadcast worldwide Thursday morning shortly after the Moon entered Scorpio where it conjoined Jupiter. The celebrations were most marked in Iraq. Immediately after the Iraqi Prime Minister's triumphant press conference, he rewarded the Sunnis for turning Zarqawi in by appointing a Sunni general as Minister of Defense.

Only in the Scorpio Rising U.S. horoscope does Jupiter bring such direct benefit about the number one concern of Americans. Simultaneously, as described over the past two weeks, Saturn is squaring the Scorpio Ascendant, and consequently, many obstacles, delays, and problems remain. Being "cautiously optimistic" is exactly the tone for Jupiter-Saturn combinations, since Jupiter brings confidence and enthusiasm, while Saturn urges restraint and discretion.

Another factor is that Jupiter is retrograde, and its full benefits won't become evident until it turns direct. This gives time to see if the Sunnis can get involved in the political process. At the moment, Jupiter is nearly two degrees from the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, but on July 5, it will be within ∏ degree as it turns direct. However, between now and then, Saturn and Chiron continue to hit the U.S. Ascendant, promising more historical developments.

Ann Coulter's Shadow

A NewsScope reader requests a peek into Ann Coulter's chart "to see how it fits in with the U.S. chart considering her remarks and book just released." Coulter is a right-wing pundit, best known for creating controversy over her outrageous comments. Last week, some of the inflammatory statements about 9/11 widows from Godless, The Church of Liberalism were read on The Today Show, and created an immediate uproar.

Ann Coulter was born with her Sun conjunct Mercury and Mars in expressive Sagittarius (December 8, 1961; Danien, CT; time unknown). From this combination, we can see that Coulter's identity or ego (Sun) is closely allied with her opinions (Mercury), which are fueled by aggressive Mars. Sagittarians naturally seek meaning in life, but when the Sun is afflicted, the tendency is to turn preachy or self-righteous.

Coulter's Mercury squares Pluto on one side and Pallas, the political asteroid, on the other. This t-square defines her relentless needling of her political adversaries. Mercury is also precisely octile (45º) Saturn in Capricorn, which points to how her opinions were shaped by her formal Catholic, Republican roots. Saturn here defines her interest in American politics since it's exactly conjunct the U.S. Pluto, the nation's ruling planet.

However, her Venus in Sagittarius square Uranus wants a great deal of sexual freedom, while the square to Chiron can make her feel unattractive or inadequate. Coulter's short skirts help compensate for these feelings, as did her more youthful phase as a Deadhead. But as a professional, the strong Saturn influence limits her personal urges toward sexual quirkiness, and she's left criticizing that in other women.

Barbra Streisand Returns

After six years away from the public spotlight, Barbra Streisand announced last week that she will return for a 20-show tour beginning in October. The popular singer generates unusually high revenues for her concerts, which she now wants to use for philanthropic purposes. "This will allow me to direct funds and awareness to causes that I care deeply about," she said.

Barbra Streisand was born with her Sun and Mercury in musical Taurus (April 24, 1942; 5:04 am; Brooklyn, NY), and in developmental tension to her Moon, Chiron and Pluto in Leo. All these creative Leo planets reside in the fifth house of entertainment, where they find expression through her artistic performances. The Leo planets are favorably trine to her Aries Rising, allowing Streisand to project boldly and loudly.

The close squares between her Taurus and Leo planets have brought Streisand some notoriety, with her determination to do things her way. She does have a strong connection with the general population, perhaps due to her Mercury-Chiron square at 8º in Taurus-Leo, which is perfectly aligned with the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, and is now being activated by several outer planets.

Hidden away in her twelfth house is a beautiful Venus-Ceres conjunction in Pisces. While her Aries Ascendant, and Taurus and Leo planets can all be said to be self-serving, her Venus-Ceres in Pisces carries tremendous passion for the suffering. At the moment, transiting Uranus is exactly conjunct her Ceres, awakening her need to be a caretaker by funding environmental, educational, and women's health organizations.
