ExxonMobil, Global Behemoth

Over the last few weeks, soaring gas prices have made ExxonMobil a favorite target for angry consumers and politicians. Some of the many considerations coming out of Washington include price controls, taxing windfall profits, and opening the Alaskan wilderness to drilling. ExxonMobil earned $37 billion in 2005 - more than any corporation in history - and many consumers suspect the company of price-gouging.

ExxonMobil was born on November 30, 1999 (12 pm; Dallas, TX), when the merger between Exxon and Mobil was officially completed. The Sagittarius Sun is conjunct Pluto, which is the signature of a monopoly, or a corporation that seeks absolute control over its competitors, and relentlessly fights any restraining political influence. The Sun-Pluto is modified by a sextile to Uranus and a quincunx (150º) to Saturn.

A key concept for Saturn-Pluto aspects is "restructuring", which the merger between two oil competitors accomplished. Another restructuring was the re-constitution of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company, the world's first monopoly* (established on January 10, 1870). The Standard Oil chart features the Sun in Saturn's sign (Capricorn) trine Pluto, which resonates strongly with ExxonMobil's Sun-Pluto quincunx Saturn.

With ExxonMobil's Uranus strongly placed in the networking sign of Aquarius, and propelled by a conjunction with Mars, the corporate system has encompassed the entire global village. Last year ExxonMobil's progressed Sun was exactly sextile Uranus, which facilitated the CEO's exit strategy with a $400 million retirement bonus. By the end of 2006, when Jupiter enters Sagittarius and conjoins the company Sun, ExxonMobil will likely report record profits, and find great opportunities to expand its control and domination.

Top Five Astro-Events for May

1. Jupiter trine Uranus (May 4) - brings sudden success to the lucky few, with the favored politicians, business personalities, and celebrities enjoying their day in the spotlight. These planets often accompany scientific breakthroughs, innovative solutions, and rapid growth along progressive trend lines. Special emphasis on human rights issues, personal freedoms, and a better future.

2. Transiting Jupiter trine U.S. Sun (May 10) - puts the White House in an upbeat, expressive mood, favors the showmanship style of Tony Snow, and increases confidence in new plans and agendas. Since Jupiter is retrograde, this link isn't particularly influential, though transiting Uranus and Mars are also trine the U.S. Sun, so they may help revive Bush's poll numbers.

3. Full Moon (May 14; 2:52 EDT) as the Sun trines U.S. Neptune exactly, and squares transiting Neptune. The double Neptune influence around the Full Moon likely brings the price of gasoline and other oil-related issues to a dramatic climax. Push comes to shove as politicians seek radical solutions while oil companies make historically high profits.

4. Mars is in Cancer throughout May has two important phases. First, transiting Mars to the U.S. progressed Mars (May 14-15) may bring violence, terrorism, or sudden disaster. Then, Mars enters the U.S. Mercury-Pluto polarity (May 24-31), and likely accompanies intense political divisions, debate, and good vs. evil/right vs. wrong approaches to major problems.

5. Neptune turns retrograde (May 22) - as the only outer planet making a station this month, Neptune's archetypal message dominates the news. Consumers become worried about oil prices, which may begin to negatively affect the economy. Oil-producing nations get top billing, especially Iran. The concurrent Jupiter-Uranus trine favors developing alternative fuels.

American Idol, Season Finale: May 23-24

A NewsScope reader asks for a prediction on the American Idol contest, which is now down to the final five. Although we don't have birth times, here are their birth dates: Paris Bennet - September 3, 1988 (Edina, MN), Chris Daughtry - December 26, 1979 (Lasker, NC), Taylor Hicks - October 6, 1976 (Birmingham, AL), Katherine McPhee - March 25, 1984 (Sherman Oaks, CA), and Elliot Yamin - July 20, 1978 (Los Angeles, CA).

Curiously, all five finalists have their Sun in aspect to Jupiter, the planet of luck and opportunity. Only Taylor Hicks has a "minor" aspect, with his Sun closely trioctile (135º) Jupiter. This gives each of the contestants a shot at winning, and most observers agree that it's too close to call. Transiting Jupiter and Uranus will be forming an exciting, celebrity-making trine over the coming month, which provides additional clues to picking a winner.

The only contestant without personal planets getting sparked by the Jupiter-Uranus vibe is Paris Bennet, so she will likely be voted out soon. Katherine McPhee's Venus at 13º Pisces is highly activated, so she looks good. Chris Daughtry's Mars, Elliot Yamin's Ceres-Uranus, and Taylor Hicks' Venus are all under the direct influence of transiting Jupiter-Uranus.

With Venus exactly squaring Mars on May 23, the season finale, the final two appear to be one guy and one girl. This makes Katherine McPhee one of the finalists. For the guy, Chris Daughtry looks like a best bet, since transiting Venus and Mars activate his Uranus on May 23, and transiting Neptune sextiles his already powerfully placed Mercury. Daughtry's Mars opposes McPhee's Venus, resonating with the season finale's transits. If I had to choose between these two, I'd go with Daughtry.
