The Retreating Mars Archetype

A major shift in the U.S. national horoscope is beginning to kick in, and is already having noticeable influences across the geopolitical landscape. By secondary progression, Mars will turn retrograde in the Scorpio Rising chart on September 1, 2006. Secondary progressions are based on the traditional formula that one day after birth is symbolically equivalent to one year after birth.

Mars is naturally associated with the military, competitiveness, sports, masculinity, male heroes, and industries involving machinery and metals. Perhaps the most self-evident manifestation of Mars slowing down is the consensus opinion to get the U.S. military out of Iraq as soon as possible. Also reflecting this Mars astro-event, baseball heroes are under investigation for steroid use, GM is near bankruptcy, while the steel and airline industries are already deeply troubled.

In the Scorpio Rising national horoscope, Mars is the chart's co-ruler, and can represent the "face" of the nation. With natal Mars in media-oriented Gemini, Mars symbolizes those who present the news. However, now that progressed Mars is turning retrograde, the network news anchors - Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, and Dan Rather - have all simultaneously left their posts after decades of service.

At ABC, the male replacement for Peter Jennings was blown up while reporting in Iraq, and was replaced by Elizabeth Vargas. And Katie Couric will become the CBS anchor in September, precisely as Mars turns retrograde. Venus, representing the female archetype, is now progressing through assertive Aries, and currently forming a success-oriented trine to the U.S. Midheaven. In politics, this indicates that California Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi will likely become the first female Speaker of the House after the November elections. Women are on the rise....

The Gospel According to Judas

According to the latest gospel to be authenticated and translated, Jesus met privately with Judas, and told him, "You will exceed all of them. For you will sacrifice the man that clothes me." The Judas Gospel was banned in 325 AD, when the Roman emperor Justinian convened a group of theological experts to whittle the many gospels into four primary ones.

The date for this event - June 19, 325 (Noon, Constantinople*) - can be considered the foundation of the Roman Catholic Church, and the corresponding horoscope reveals how much the Judas Gospel is shaking up traditional views. The primary configuration in this chart centers around the Sun-Saturn conjunction in late Gemini, which is given political and historical endurance through the trine to Pluto in Aquarius.

Last week, when National Geographic unveiled the "new" gospel, transiting Pluto had just turned direct on the Galactic Center in late Sagittarius, where it formed an exact opposition to the Church's Sun-Saturn. At the same time, the faster-moving Mars was conjunct the Church's Sun-Saturn. All this took place in the religious, debate-oriented polarity of Gemini-Sagittarius as the intense, confrontational vibration (Mars-opposite-Pluto) was shaking up Church authority (Sun-Saturn).

Then, the planet of surprising developments, Uranus, was precisely square the Church's Mercury, the natural ruler of documents. Also, transiting Neptune was exactly conjunct the Church's Uranus in Aquarius, ushering in a wave of Gnostic mysticism. Although not mentioned in the media, the Judas Gospel has a surprising number of astrological references, including descriptions of wandering stars (planets), and "the stars that bring everything to conclusion."

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith

As Saturn turns direct in Leo, it's time to look into one of Hollywood's celebrity couples, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith. Antonio is currently in the media spotlight as he promotes his new film Take the Lead, while Melanie is being sued by her gown designer for not mentioning his name while she was at the Golden Globe Awards.

Antonio Banderas was born under the regal sign of Leo (August 10, 1960; 9:00 pm; Malaga, Spain). His Sun conjunct Uranus and trine Jupiter in his tenth house of career is an unusually fortunate combination for an actor, promising plenty of natural charisma and swift success. With Mars in agile Gemini squaring his Pisces Ascendant (associated with feet), he's become known for his fancy footwork, both as the mysterious swordsman Zorro, and now as a ballroom dancer.

Melanie Griffith was born with her Leo Sun opposite a Moon-Chiron conjunction in Aquarius (August 9, 1957; 11:49 pm; New York, NY), a combination that is needier about getting attention and recognition. Melanie had to fight for her career success, but with Venus trine her sensual Taurus Ascendant, she quickly turned her natural beauty into a successful film career.

As Saturn heads toward their Leo Suns, their divergent career paths will undoubtedly bring some rocky times to their marriage. Saturn brings Antonio favorable reviews, while Melanie's career is fading. Juno, the marriage asteroid, is in Melanie's first house, and was hit last week by the transiting Mars-Pluto opposition (Antonio was a co-defendant in the lawsuit). However, Antonio's progressed Juno trines his Sun this year, indicating that he will remain faithful.
