Mars and Jupiter Hit American Ascendant

As Americans grow increasingly skeptical about the Iraq mission, some relatively good news is coming out of Baghdad. Several Sunni insurgent groups expressed interest in joining the political process in time for the crucial December 15 election. Also last week, at the Arab League Conference in Cairo, Sunni and Shiite leaders agreed on a timetable for American troop withdrawal.

Astrologically, good news often comes along during favorable Jupiter transits, and last week was no exception. Transiting Jupiter is in Scorpio now, and forming a favorable trine to Uranus in Pisces. This harmonious vibration set up a number of breakthroughs across our global village, and included the opening of the Gaza strip, women heads-of-state elected in Germany and Liberia, and surging stock markets.

Jupiter is heading for a conjunction with the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, and will be there right around the time Mercury turns direct on December 4. Mercury, the natural ruler of announcements, is forming a favorable trine to the U.S. Mercury, so one might expect some additional good news next weekend, perhaps coming in the form of solid corporate earnings, or an agreement between the Iraqi government and Sunni insurgents.

However, one cannot become complacent under such favorable transits, since on December 10 Mars turns direct while exactly opposite the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant. In Iraq and elsewhere across the global village, the astrologer should expect a wave of military, political, and economic attacks against U.S. interests. Domestically as well, violence is highly likely. Watch for competing actions for and against the American image as Mars and Jupiter align with the U.S. Ascendant.

Medicare Part D Overhaul

A reader writes, "I always enjoy your NewsScope. I wish you would take a look at Medicare Part D which begins on January 1. Many elderly and disabled people will be affected by it. With confusion surrounding this new program, I doubt the companies handling it will be ready." The legislation for this program was signed on December 8, 2003 (11:35 am; Washington DC*), and this gives us a starting point.

At the moment Bush signed this bill, the Sun was conjunct Pluto and the two
opposite the Moon. This configuration alone reflects the challenging relationship between a powerful government (Sun-Pluto) and the people and their security needs (Moon). These planets square Jupiter in Virgo, which can be seen as the involvement of wealthy corporate interests (Jupiter) associated with the
health industry (Virgo).

One of the closest aspects in this chart is Neptune sextile the Midheaven, which specifically correlates the purpose of the legislation (Midheaven) to the drug plan (Neptune). However, Saturn forms an inconjunct (150º) t both of these, creating an unstable Yod. Saturn here represents the bureaucratic structure to implement the program. Saturn to Neptune creates plenty of inherent confusion.

Participants were allowed to sign-up beginning on November 15, which was the day Mercury turned retrograde right on this chart's Midheaven. First, this is a classic Mercury retrograde snafu, and one advisedly awaits Mercury's direct station (December 4) before deciding. Second, progressing the chart reveals that a major overhaul of this legislation is coming soon (progressed Sun conjunct Pluto, May 2007), so if you can, best hold off on long-range commitments until Congress fixes it.

The Revolutionary "Merry Christmas"

On December 25, 1914 one of the most bizarre events of World War I took place, as enemy combatants climbed out of their trenches to share cigarettes and cocoa, sing some traditional carols, and then a few days later return to fighting. French filmmaker Christian Carion portrayed this spontaneous ceasefire** in "Merry Christmas", which received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film
Festival.

with Venus, the planet of peace, placed at 28º Scorpio. Venus here squares
Mars, the war planet, but is very favorably trine his karmic North Node. Venus to the North Node represents his path to personal evolution. Synchronistically, Venus on December 25, 1914 was at 28º Scorpio.

The planetary alignments on that fateful day in 1914 included a Sun-Mars conjunction opposite Pluto, a perfect celestial signature for bloody warfare. But the Sun and Mars were one degree past the conjunction, so that the most severe influences unfolded days before. The influence coming into play was Venus in Scorpio trine to Neptune in Cancer, a combination that takes the dream of peace and makes it a reality.

Carion, being a Capricorn, is ruled by Saturn. His Saturn happens to be conjunct a Pallas-Uranus conjunction from the Christmas 1914 event, another fateful connection between his personal ambition (Saturn) and the revolutionary political detente of 1914 (Pallas-Uranus). Currently, transiting Saturn is activating this entire complex, as "Merry Christmas" has become the number one draw in France, and is being sent to British troops in Iraq.
