Saturn and Neptune Shape Global Village

Although transiting Saturn in Leo will soon turn retrograde, over the next two years it advances into an opposition to Neptune in Aquarius, an outer planet dynamic that will shape geopolitical events across our global village. Authoritarian Saturn in imperial Leo represents the empowerment of central governments and charismatic or autocratic leaders. Neptune in Aquarius, on the other hand, is the networking power of decentralization and democracy.

The Saturn-Neptune polarity brings a phase of bridging the hopes and ideologies (Neptune) with pragmatic, realistic goals (Saturn). The first of three exact oppositions between these planets occurs in August 2006, with the next two taking place in 2007. Great revolutions unfold during this planetary combination, including the Bolshevik and Mexican revolutions in 1917 when Neptune was in Leo and Saturn in Aquarius.

The Saturn-Neptune opposition happens to land right on the U.S. Midheaven/IC axis, pointing to profound political dynamics pending in this country. With Neptune on the nation's fourth house cusp, we can expect that the political, economic, and military policies will be shaped by the oil and gas industry. Saturn at the Midheaven informs us of American dominance in international affairs. However, with the opposition to scandal-plagued Neptune, some American leaders will certainly fall.

On a more esoteric level, Saturn opposite Neptune in Aquarius begs the question: are we in the Age of Aquarius yet? Astrologers have reached no consensus on the date, but like the dawning of a new day, the moment may be defined as the first glimmer of light, or the actual appearance of the Sun. We do see signs of the coming New Age, notably, the internet moving us toward a de-centralized, information-based society. However, as long as we collectively depend on oil and faith-based, organized religion for our energy and spiritual sustenance, Pisces remains the dominant paradigm.

Iran's Hard-line President

Elected last June by promising economic reforms to the poor, Iranian President Ahmadinejad created an international uproar last week when he advocated wiping Israel off the map. In Tehran, a million supporters took to the streets to demonstrate their approval, while a silenced, internet-savvy middle class watched in dismay. Iran's reformers seemed pushed out of the political system, but Tony Blair warned that such policies justified a pre-emptive invasion.

Iran's horoscope (April 1, 1979; 3:00 pm; Tehran*) warrants close monitoring by political astrologers. The new president has recently been fortified by transiting Saturn in Leo trine Iran's Aries Sun, giving him a monarch's sense of authority. Saturn remains in this favorable, supportive trine over the coming year, but at the same time, squares Iran's Midheaven. This connection challenges his and Iran's international standing.

As reported last August 8 and May 2, 2005, transiting Pluto is heading into a dangerous, volatile square with Iran's Mars in secretive Pisces. The national desire for a nuclear weapons program intensifies under this celestial push, as does nationalism itself. The standard strategy for rallying domestic unity is by identifying a hostile enemy, and at the moment, seems to be Israel, which already has nuclear weapons.

On November 16, transiting Uranus turns direct while forming a close square to Iran's Moon. This link can electrify (Uranus) the populace (Moon). At the same time, transiting Mars and Saturn square each other while activating Iran's Midheaven, indicating growing antagonism between Iranian policies and world opinion. Expect some fast-paced, unsettling developments over the coming week.

George Clooney, Filmmaker

George Clooney's avant garde film "Good Night and Good Luck" is getting rave reviews from the critics, as he marks a successful transition from heart-throb actor to truth-telling producer in the film business. Although this career move is already sparking Oscar buzz for best film script (which he wrote), Clooney has been sidelined by a rare disease that brings daily doses of intense pain.

Clooney was born with Pisces Rising (May 6, 1961; 2:58 am; Lexington, KY), a sign associated with the dream factory film business, but also a profound sensitivity to pain and suffering. Regarding health issues, Pluto opposes Chiron, and these two planets are conjunct the Lunar Node axis. Any affliction to the Lunar Node axis can bring health problems, but this is doubly true when they are found in the sixth and twelfth houses of health.

He doesn't say, but Clooney probably began having painful episodes when transiting Uranus touched off his Chiron-Pluto axis two years ago. Chiron, often associated with physical ailments, just turned direct on his Capricorn Moon, pointing to structural or skeletal vulnerability. Also, Uranus is located, natally, in the sixth house of health, and has recently been transiting across his Ascendant. Three indicators confirm the changing health status.

Meanwhile, transiting Pluto has been passing over his career point, the Midheaven. Pluto here brought the actor worldwide fame for his leadership role in "Ocean's Eleven", but also urged him onto a new career path as an experimental filmmaker. Pluto here is willing to broach taboo subjects, and the McCarthy-era Red Scare, filmed in black and white, was just the right venue.
