Political Earthquake in Washington
All three branches of the federal government experienced dramatic
developments last week, seismic shifts that were the political
equivalent of the Gulf Coast hurricanes and raging California
fires. On the congressional side, Tom DeLay and Bill Frist fell
into legal hot water, as did Dick Cheney's assistant Scooter Libby.
The one smooth transition was the appointment of John Roberts
to the Supreme Court.
Astrologically, this tempestuous
political climate is evident
when examining the current
conditions around the Scorpio
Rising U.S. horoscope,
and especially the chart's
ruling planet, Pluto. In
the U.S. chart, Pluto's
activation by major transits
leads to historic developments,
and usually corresponds
to the exercise of power
in some way. A faction
is mobilized, making for
big winners and embittered
losers.
In the U.S. horoscope,
Pluto opposes Mercury,
a dynamic configuration
that leads to intense debates,
an "us versus them" mentality,
and often legal fights
since Mercury is in the
ninth house of justice.
Last week, when transiting
Jupiter (naturally associated
with lawyers) was squaring
Mercury, several legal
developments set in motion
the political chain of
events rolling, and John
Roberts was approved.
Jupiter goes on to square
the U.S. Pluto on October
14, an important connection
that happens about every
three years. However, this
one is extraordinary since
transiting Chiron is turning
direct right on the U.S.
Pluto at the same time.
Chiron is in this zodiacal
vicinity only once every
fifty years, a treacherous
cycle that last occurred
in 1954 during the red-baiting
McCarthy era. Between now
and mid-October, we can
expect huge developments
in Iraq, the stock market,
and inside Washington.
Tom DeLay, On the Ropes
The most poignant example
of the political storm passing through Washington was the indictment
of Tom DeLay, who was forced to step down from his position
as House Republican Majority leader. DeLay, already thrice-warned
by the Congressional Ethics Committee, was accused of a criminal
conspiracy in a campaign fund-raising scheme. DeLay's troubles
strike at the core of the way business is done in Washington.
Tom DeLay* was born with
his Sun in the fighter's
sign of Aries (April 8,
1947; 9:47 pm; Laredo,
TX), and a Scorpio Ascendant,
a combination determined
to gain dominance over
his social environment.
The political asteroid
Pallas is angular (conjunct
the fourth house cusp of
the home), where she steers
his efforts into the political
arena, and gives him his
Texas political base.
A Moon-Jupiter conjunction
on his Scorpio Ascendant
describes his connection
to Big Money, and how he
uses that to empower himself
and his constituents. The
Moon-Jupiter is given institutional,
professional setting by
the trines to Saturn and
Mars, which allow him to
build a closed circuit
of corporate-political
back-scratching. This Grand
Trine describes the well-oiled
political machine that
achieves power for its
own sake.
DeLay's ruling planet is
Pluto, which is found in
Leo, the sign of the king.
An entire generation of
baby-boomers has this placement,
and the corresponding desire
to reign over the land.
Few have made it, and even
fewer deserve it. Now,
transiting Saturn is heading
for DeLay's Pluto to test
his status. Saturn turns
retrograde on November
22 right on his Pluto,
when we can expect a significant
judgment on his case.
Bob Dylan, Re-Born Again
Martin
Scorsese's much anticipated documentary on Bob Dylan, No Direction
Home, aired last week on PBS and the BBC, and received rave reviews
while pushing sales of Dylan's recordings through the roof. Among
the film's many fascinating perspectives was of Dylan as the voice
of the times. Astrologically, what could account for Dylan's unique
ability to channel the revolutionary feeling-tone of the 1960s?
Bob Dylan was born with his
Sun in versatile Gemini (May
24, 1941; 9:05 pm; Duluth,
MN) square Mars in intuitive,
sensitive Pisces. From this
aspect, we can see his indomitable
drive, his changeable, moody
nature (in mutable signs),
and his aggressiveness, willing
to take on authority or tradition.
The Sun sextile Pluto deepens
his presentation, giving an
ability to connect on a soul
level.
Dylan's Mercury is the only
planet near an angle, and as
such, dominates his horoscope.
Mercury, the communications
planet, is dignified in Gemini.
He is by nature a messenger,
and with Mercury's square to
Neptune, his messages are lyrical,
imaginative, and often inspired.
Neptune is located in the ninth
house, the house of religion
and mysticism. Neptune here
can represent his muse, the
source of his artistic expression.
Neptune is also favorably conjunct
the karmic North Node, which
readily tunes him toward a
sacred or even prophetic path.
Neptune is also trine to a
stellium of planets in Taurus,
which can ground the received
messages in the real world,
bring him financial security,
and staying power. Over the
last month, transiting Pluto
turned direct while conjunct
his philosophical Sagittarius
Ascendant, bringing yet another
re-birth to the legendary folk-hero.
