Neptune Spawns Katrina

New Orleans, Katrina's point of attack on the U.S. coastline, is also the nexus of major oil and transportation systems. When this category five hurricane struck, not only did it create a huge regional mess, but the aftermath sent gas prices soaring across the country, and will likely lead to a significant recession beginning in a few months. As the most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history, the planetary indicators will be plainly visible in the U.S. horoscope.

All the key words describing this colossal tragedy – flooding, oil, victims, uncertainty and chaos – speak of Neptune. New Orleans itself, sitting below sea level, and the soul of the Blues, resonates with Neptune, the God of the Seas. In the Scorpio Rising chart (2:21 pm; July 4, 1776), transiting Neptune is right on the U.S. fourth house cusp, exactly opposite the Midheaven.

A fundamental principle in traditional astrology is that major events correspond to major transits to the angles. The four angles represent the points where spirit manifests in the material world. Without the connections to the angles, nothing of historic significance can happen. While slow-moving Neptune was passing over the U.S. fourth house cusp, along came Mars to trigger the hurricane. Mars and Neptune were exactly squaring each other when Katrina landed.

In addition, transiting Uranus was conjunct the U.S. Ceres, the asteroid associated with disaster relief. As described previously*, "Transiting Uranus, the planet of crisis and sudden developments, is heading for the U.S. Ceres, and makes its first conjunction on April 1, followed by another on September 3... and indicates that the Southeast Asian tsunami is likely only a prelude to more natural disasters and other grief inducing events."

The Astrology of Hurricanes

Like other destructive hurricanes before it, Katrina arrived when all the outer planets were forming close aspects to each other. In Katrina's case, Jupiter and Neptune were trine, while the destructive duo Saturn and Pluto formed a tri-octile (135º aspect). Saturn was also opposite Chiron, which historically has been involved in these celestial currents.

Hurricane Andrew (August 24, 1992) was the previous holder of the most destructive, in terms of property damage. Andrew took place as Jupiter trined a Uranus-Neptune conjunction. Saturn and Chiron opposed each other, as well, with Pluto widely squaring both. Hurricane Camille (August 17, 1969) held the title before Andrew, and this one featured a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction opposite Chiron, and Saturn precisely tri-octile Pluto.

Naturally, the outer planet alignments influence the entire global weather system, but what fixates these stresses into the United States are the concurrent hits to the U.S. horoscope. Katrina is a perfect example, since transiting Neptune was (and is) right on the U.S. fourth house cusp. During Andrew's rampage, Chiron was right on the U.S. Midheaven (with Saturn opposite). Camille featured Saturn exactly conjunct the U.S. Descendant.

The tiny asteroid Juno, sometimes referred to as the Storm Goddess, plays a surprisingly huge role in the astrology of hurricanes. More often than not, Juno and Uranus are forming very tight aspects to each other. During the Galveston Hurricane (September 6, 1900), when the greatest number of lives were lost, Juno and Uranus were exactly trine to each other. Katrina (Juno square Uranus), Andrew (Juno inconjunct Uranus), and Camille (Juno square Uranus) all fit the pattern. For forecasters, Juno-Uranus combinations can be used as the timer after the larger planets have moved into position.

Harry Connick Jr. Returns to New Orleans

Among the many great celebrities born and raised in New Orleans, Harry Connick Jr. is one of the most impressive. Last week he returned to his roots to witness the devastation, and report live his thoughts and feelings for NBC's "Today" show. "Everything that I have professionally, and so much of what I have personally, is because of this great, fair city," he said.

Harry Connick Jr. was born with his Sun in meticulous Virgo (September 11, 1967; New Orleans; time unknown), where it aspects all three of the outer planets. The Sun linked to these transpersonal, generational planets instills an aura of power and mystique, often bestowing special skills, talents, or a sense of mission that influences the masses.

While many have this outer planet set-up, only those who work with Saturn can manage its intense voltage. Otherwise, the tendency is to become an outsider, or worse, experience lifelong depression and/or addiction. Connick's Mercury (ruling his Virgo planets) opposes Saturn, forcing him into a disciplined approach. Then, Mars trine Saturn in Aries is a double message, giving stamina, courage, and leadership qualities.

Of course, not all those affected by Katrina have their own horoscopes under major stress – this is why we study Political Astrology, which is to get the Big Picture. However, Connick has Ceres at 8º Virgo, exactly aligned with the U.S. Ceres, and currently activated by transiting Uranus. And so he feels very personally the sadness of this New Orleans tragedy. As he said in one of the telethons, "To see it being drowned like this is almost unbearable."
