Kerkorian at GM

Corporate takeover artist Kirk Kerkorian announced plans to spend nearly $900 million for 28 million shares of General Motors, which will boost his stake to 9% of the world's largest automaker. GM's market share has been dwindling in recent years, and over the past few months its big money makers, the SUVs, have fallen sharply due to rising gasoline prices.

Billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian was born with his Sun in the transportation sign of Gemini (June 6, 1917; 12:00 pm; Fresno, CA). With a Venus-Pluto conjunction in his tenth house of business, he has learned to transform (Pluto) unrecognized value (Venus) in companies, and then sell them at a huge profit. Previously, he accomplished this with Chrysler, and Wall Street expects him to do the same with GM.

Franklin Duryea, the founder of General Motors, built the first American automobile in 1892 as transiting Pluto was conjunct innovative Uranus. Over the next few years, a thousand motor car companies sprouted up, but the big players consolidated and survived when transiting Pluto arrived on the U.S. Mars in 1906-1908. General Motors itself was incorporated on September 16, 1908 with both the Moon and Pluto in Gemini.

Now transiting Pluto is opposing the U.S. Mars, as well as GM's natal Pluto. Transiting Pluto is challenging the U.S. industrial transportation base, which also includes the airline industry. Pluto's cosmic mission is to cut out the weakest links, and let the strongest survive and prosper. Last week Pluto arrived at GM's doorstep in the form of Kirk Kerkorian.

Relocating the Atomic Age Horoscope to North Korea

Is North Korea preparing to detonate its first nuclear bomb? Regular readers of NewsScope are familiar with North Korea's national horoscope,* but another perspective, and equally foreboding, comes from relocating the Atomic Age horoscope. The Atomic Age began when the U.S. tested the first nuclear bomb on July 16, 1945 (5:29:45 am MWT; Trinity, NM).

This horoscope can be relocated to various power centers around the globe to determine local interest in developing nuclear weapons. In New Delhi, India, for example, the relocated Atomic Age chart features Jupiter squaring the Sagittarius Ascendant and Neptune conjunct the Midheaven. On May 11, 1998 when India conducted its first nuke test, transiting Jupiter and the progressed Moon were both aligned with the relocated chart's natal Jupiter, while progressed Jupiter had reached the Midheaven.

Relocating the Atomic Age horoscope to Beijing to monitor China's interest in atomic weapons is equally revealing. This chart features the Sun conjunct the Descendant, and Uranus in a sharp angle (quincunx) to the Midheaven. China's first atomic bomb test was conducted on October 16, 1964 when transiting Neptune was right on the relocated Midheaven, and transiting Pluto was precisely square Uranus.

Relocating the Atomic Age chart to Pyongyang puts Mars conjunct the fourth house cusp, and Pluto near the Descendant. These militant placements alone are enough to send shivers down the armchair astrologer's spine. The relocated Beijing and New Delhi horoscopes reflected their nuke tests, with Neptune's prominence being a common signature. At the moment, the Pyongyang horoscope shows progressed Mars square Neptune. This aspect is exact in less than four months, but is now within effective range.

American Idol, Top Three

Last week voters sent contestant Scott Savoy home, leaving only four American Idol finalists. Judge Paula Abdul's alleged affair** with a previous contestant sparked international attention, giving the popular TV show yet another boost in the ratings. Who will win? Carrie Underwood** is still in the running, while Bo Bice and Vonzell Solomon remain solid contenders.

Bo Bice was born with his Sun in the charismatic sign of Scorpio (November 1, 1975; Helena, AL; time unknown), and in an electrifying conjunction with Uranus. His Saturn in Leo squares Uranus, giving him an aura of being counter-culture, like the rock star that he is. During the elimination months, transiting Uranus has fortified his presence and standing with a very favorable trine to his Sun.

Vonzell Solomon, like Carrie Underwood, was born with the Sun in ethereal Pisces (March 18, 1984; Baxley, GA; time unknown). Also, like Carrie, her Sun squares Neptune, an influence that arouses enormous empathy from the audience. However, without a strong Mars, this combination can seem weak. Like Carrie, Vonzell arrived with a strong Mars (trine the Sun), allowing her to powerfully project her voice and personality.

Vonzell's performance is boosted by transiting Jupiter and Uranus, which are both hitting her Jupiter, and anointing her with the celestial stuff from which stars are made. Bo's Sun at 8º Scorpio happens to be exactly conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, giving him the exciting persona that America sees in itself. Transiting Jupiter is right on Bo's ruling planet Pluto, blessing him with fame and fortune, and an excellent opportunity to become the contest winner.

* For North Korea's chart and discussion of its nuclear ambitions, see Feb 15, 2005. To relocate the Atomic Age horoscope, enter the date and time as July 16, 1945 and 5:29:45 am MWT, but enter the location as the locale under inspection, generally the nation's capital city. The chart becomes interesting when planets are on any of the four angles, or closely aspecting the angles.
