The Birth of the Global Brain

As Iraqi refugees from fourteen nations across the global village voted last week, the concept of the nation-state itself is transforming under the larger cycle of the Ages: the end of the Age of Pisces and the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. As described two weeks ago, the mutual reception of Uranus in Pisces and Neptune in Aquarius represents an inflection point, a shift in the collective global consciousness.

The cyclical conjunction of Uranus and Neptune every 172 years is the chief marker for the evolution of civilizations. The framework for the nation-state was first formalized in 1648 under the Treaty of Westphalia, which took place when Uranus and Neptune were conjunct in Sagittarius. The previous conjunction in 1478-79 marked the Renaissance, and the conjunction in 1821 witnessed a broad spectrum of emerging nations, especially in South America.

The most recent Uranus-Neptune conjunction in 1992-93 brought the dissolution of the Soviet empire and Yugoslavia, and the emergence of many smaller nations, as well as the European Union, and the establishment of the U.S. as sole superpower. Among the evolving concepts of the nation-state was the birth of the micronation*, which is a group of like-minded people declaring their sovereignty in cyberspace.

A virtual boom in micronationalism was made possible through the internet, which became viable in 1992-93 during the Uranus-Neptune conjunction. The international symbol for the world wide web is www, very similar to the glyph for Aquarius. As the web reaches every individual across the planet, the confluence of micronations may spontaneously reorganize itself into the World Wide Nation. This phenomenon can be described as the evolution of consciousness into the Global Brain.

Sharon Stone, Spontaneous Fundraiser

At an international economic forum held in Switzerland last Friday, sultry actress Sharon Stone was in the audience listening to well-heeled dignitaries discuss African poverty. After forty minutes of discussing the need for more mosquito nets to beat malaria, she stood up suddenly and said, "I'd like to offer you $10,000 to help you buy nets today." Within five minutes 30 others stood up to follow her example, raising $1 million on the spot.

Sharon Stone was born with Pluto Rising (March 10, 1958; 4:52 pm**, Meadeville, PA), a placement that feels compelled to cut through non-essentials. Pluto is modified by a square from the Moon, giving her an emotional intensity that comes across clearly in her movie roles. Pluto is also closely sextile to Jupiter, a favorable combination that places her among the most wealthy and influential.

Being a Pisces, Ms. Stone is naturally attuned to the suffering in the world, and this has been extra true since Uranus entered Pisces. Uranus, sometimes referred to as the "divorce planet", entered her seventh house in January 2004, which was when she divorced her last husband, newspaperman Phil Bronstein (verifying the rectification). Uranus here also awakened her to the real changes she could make in the world.

Natally, Uranus is located in her twelfth house and opposed to Venus. This combination can lead to secret love affairs or eccentric sexual behavior. However, Uranus here can also signify philanthropy. Last Friday transiting Sun was conjunct her Venus and opposed her Uranus when she spontaneously felt the urge to donate her own money, and encourage others to do the same. Due to the current prominence of her progressed Ceres and Jupiter, we can expect more of this generous sentiment over the next few years.

Johnny Carson, "I'll be right back"

Johnny Carson, the king of late night comedy, died last week, and the tributes began pouring in from around the country. Besides keeping Americans in stitches during his thirty years of doing "The Tonight Show", he boosted the careers of innumerable new stars. During a 1992 farewell interview he was asked what he would like for his epitaph, and he said "I'll be right back."

This line suggesting reincarnation fits Johnny's Scorpio Ascendant (October 23, 1925; 7:15 am; Corning, IA). He also has witty Mercury conjunct shrewd Saturn near his Ascendant, all of which aligns with the Scorpio Ascendant in the U.S. horoscope. Johnny's many planets around 14 degrees bestows a tightly integrated personality, but also resonates deeply with the Sun-Saturn square in the U.S. chart, making him an American institution.

His Libra Sun and Mars are located in his twelfth house, showing a need for privacy. Mars in particular is powerfully challenged by a square from Pluto, so that this planet can become "secret enemies". Johnny was hounded by stalkers and death threats, but his worst enemy was his addiction to cigarettes, which reflects this house's association with self-undoing.

With a friendly, sociable Moon-Jupiter conjunction in the third house of visitors, Johnny Carson had a knack for putting guests at ease. Likewise, Venus in warm-hearted Sagittarius formed a trine to kindly Ceres and his Midheaven, giving him enormous public appeal. Dr. Joyce Brothers was one of many who noted this beneficent attitude, "He never said a cutting remark..., and I watched for years and years, and it was always fun to go to bed feeling happy and pleased."
