Mars Over Iraq
Mars entered Sagittarius on Christmas Day, and remains in the
sign of religion, travel, and the quest for meaning through February
6. Mars here activates the desire to expand one's horizons, both
in the cultural or geographical sense, as well as the inner sense.
Mars in Sagittarius acts on beliefs, strives to achieve justice,
and may attack others based on moral judgments.
This coming week Mars picks
up the energy of a square
to Uranus in Pisces (exact
December 30), an exceptionally
temperamental combination.
Individuals with their
Sun or other prominent
planet located in the early
degrees of the mutable
signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius,
and Pisces) will be especially
responsive to this transit,
and may feel unusually
nervous, irritable, impatient,
or accident prone.
In the geopolitical realm,
we can expect a barrage
of explosions, especially
in Iraq (August 23, 1921;
6:00 pm; Baghdad) where
this Mars-Uranus square
hits the angles. The horrific
suicide bombing in Mosul
last week took place as
transiting Mars was nearing
the fourth house cusp and
square Iraq's Sun. Mars
continues through Sagittarius
until it forms a mighty
conjunction with Pluto
on January 28, only days
before the Iraqi election.
Mars-Pluto in Sagittarius
is the ultimate assertion
of will power, especially
when guided by religious
certainty. While this connection
presumes incredible violence
in Iraq, it may also herald
a Shi-ite election victory.
The revered Islamic leader
Ali al-Sistani has his
Venus* aligned with this
Mars-Pluto pair, indicating
a transformative empowerment
for his hand-picked legislators,
and a sudden surge in his
popularity. Is the Bush
administration ready for
a freely-elected, Ayatollah-ruled
Iraq?
Pluto Transforms Rumsfeld's Public Image
Last week Donald Rumsfeld admitted that, "looking for a
peaceful Iraq after the elections would be a mistake." This
statement followed his admission that condolence letters to soldiers
killed in Iraq were signed with a machine, and a previous snafu
over unarmored vehicles. The deteriorating situation in Iraq begs
for a fall guy... and pressure is mounting on the Secretary of
Defense.
Donald Rumsfeld was born
with his Sun in Cancer
(July 9, 1932; 5:40 pm;
Chicago), a placement which
is aligned with the Uranus-Pluto
square that is found in
all the charts of those
born in the early 1930s.
Uranus in Aries square
Pluto in Cancer brought
ideological fanaticism
in many forms then, including
Nazism, Communism, Japanese
Imperialism, and strident
nationalism virtually everywhere.
Transiting Saturn is now
in late Cancer where it
hits the horoscopes of
this Uranus-Pluto generation.
Rumsfeld's chart is particularly
hard-hit since his Pluto
has progressed to a precise
square to his natal Uranus.
Saturn will pass over this
sensitized degree on January
21, but for the entire
month of January we can
expect his public support
to continue declining.
Will he be fired? Transiting
Uranus is simultaneously
opposing his Neptune, which
is his link with Bush's
Mars (see NewsScope May
10, 2004 for more on this
connection). Also, transiting
Pluto is conjunct his Ascendant,
which has inspired him
to improve his public image.
Last week's secret trip
to visit the troops may
be enough to temporarily
keep his critics at bay,
at least through the election
at the end of January.
Jennifer Garner, The Spy with a Thousand Gorgeous Faces
Slinky,
high-kicking actress Jennifer Garner promises to be a high profile
celebrity over the next month as her hot TV series "Alias" returns
on January 5. Then, she stars in the blockbuster film "Elektra",
a comic book adaptation which will open in theaters on January
14. Hollywood's number one action heroine is also rumored to be
pregnant with boyfriend Ben Affleck.
Jennifer Garner was born with
her Sun in the warrior sign
of Aries (April 17, 1972; Houston,
TX; time unknown), and her
Mars in the multi-tasking,
agile sign of Gemini. Her war
planet is conjunct Venus, giving
her tremendous sex appeal.
This Venus-Mars duo is dramatically
enhanced with a trine to exciting,
electric Uranus. Venus-Mars-Uranus
is flashy and entertaining,
and with the Gemini influence,
witty and humorous.
Garner's on-screen talent for
disguise can be attributed
to her four planets in Gemini,
which enjoy assuming multiple
personalities. Saturn in Gemini
is exactly opposite Neptune,
the planet of camouflage, secrets,
and smoke screens. Saturn represents
a field of expertise, and with
the connection to Neptune,
her specialty has become her
changeability, easily shifting
from mortal combat, to covert
ops, to a gorgeous gown.
With Capricorn on Ben Affleck's
seventh house of partnerships
(August 15, 1972; 2:53 am;
Berkeley, CA), Saturn is the
ruler of his relationship patterns.
Former flame Jennifer Lopez
had her Venus conjunct his
Saturn, and current flame Jennifer
Garner also has her Venus on
his Saturn. With his Saturn
located in the twelfth house
of secret affairs (and in Gemini,
the sign of duality), loyalty
and stability are chronic problems.
