U.S. Trade Deficit Soars

Last Friday Alan Greenspan warned that the growing U.S. trade deficit could pose a significant risk to the economy, as the second quarter numbers came in at an all-time high of $166 billion. Greenspan's comments inspired currency traders to dump dollars. At week's end the dollar sank to a 4 ∏ year low against the yen, and was near an all-time low against the euro.

With Pluto currently transiting through the U.S. second house of money and national assets, the potential for a traumatic economic reversal is real. From an historical perspective, Saturn transits through this house have often brought major slumps, beginning with precipitous collapses in the stock market. The crashes of 1929 and 1987 were both triggered by Saturn in the U.S. second house.

Currently, Pluto is opposing the U.S. Mars and will advance to square the U.S. Neptune throughout 2005. A stressed-out Pluto in the second house corresponds to an economy under stress, one burdened by a number of converging factors including rising oil prices, time-bomb demographics, and a ballooning national deficit. Last week transiting Mercury (ruling communications) conjoined with Pluto to bring the issue into the public awareness.

As described two weeks ago, the U.S. progressed Venus is also signaling a downturn in the business cycle. This astro-event (progressed Venus opposite Saturn) becomes exact in February 2006, but becomes an important influence in the second half of 2005. Then, transiting Neptune crosses over the fourth house cusp, underscoring the shakiness of oil prices. A traditional astrological axiom is that when you have three indicators forecasting the same thing, you've got a sure bet.

Iran's Seventh House

Last week the American media were filled with speculation about how the Bush administration will handle Iran over the next four years, and especially how to contain its nuclear program and support of Palestinian terrorism. Hardliners are openly discussing the need to confront Iran either by economic sanctions, military action, or fostering regime change, while Europeans are urging the diplomatic route.

Iran's current government was established when the Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile on February 1, 1979 (9:30 am; Tehran). A militant Sun-Mars conjunction in revolutionary Aquarius reflects the ambitious nature of the established Islamic nation. Over the past few years transiting Neptune has been hovering over this Sun-Mars, weakening the leadership capacity, but perhaps also inferring the kind of secret agenda that builds nuclear weapons.

Iran's chart shows an awareness of powerful threats against its survival, which is signified by Pluto in the seventh house of open enemies. This Pluto is most readily projected onto the American CIA which installed the Shah in a successful bid to control Iran's abundant oil reserves back in 1953. When American politicians mention "regime change", to many Iranians this means the kind of covert operations that topple Islamic leaders.

Over the next year transiting Pluto is forming a hard aspect to Iran's Mars (an octile or 45 degree aspect). The Pluto-to-Mars vibe is characterized by an intense hostility and relentless determination to dominate perceived enemies (for example, the U.S. invasion of Fallujah as transiting Pluto opposes the U.S. Mars). Watch around late January and early February (when Jupiter turns retrograde right on Iran's Pluto) for major diplomatic developments.

Colin Farrell as Alexander

Oliver Stone's much anticipated film "Alexander", is scheduled to open this week amidst mixed early reviews. Like "Troy", this $160 million epic resonates with our current climate of war, arrogant rulers, empires, pleas for peace, and the need to dominate. However, the most controversial feature is the depiction of Alexander as bisexual, which has many Greeks complaining about this twisted version.

Alexander is played by Irish actor Colin Farrell, who was born with the Sun in dualistic Gemini (May 31, 1976; Dublin; time unknown), a placement that is made even more splintered by its opposition to hazy Neptune. Interviewers have noticed his multiple personalities, as he spontaneously shifts from the defiant, street-kid side to the polite, thoughtful actor analyzing life's complexities.

Farrell's Mars in the imperial sign of Leo is ideally placed to play a world conqueror. Mars in Leo is full of self-confidence, even arrogance, and is given a mythological superiority complex by connections to all three of the outer planets. Mars is further enhanced with a dash of sex appeal via its harmonious aspect to Venus.

The horoscope does not reveal one's sexual orientation, though with his Sun and Venus in Gemini opposite Neptune, Farrell can certainly embody this role for Oliver Stone's version of history. Venus is also tightly connected to Uranus in Scorpio, which encourages sexual experimentation. As the film opens, transiting Uranus is linking up with Farrell's Venus-Uranus pairing, bringing the shock value so eagerly loved by both the director and the lead actor.

As an event chart notice that Jupiter in Leo is trine the Aries Moon and Ascendant, which can be seen as the religious king, the Ayatollah returned, meeting the victorious mob that had forced the Shah into exile.
