Tony Blair, Building a Two-State Solution

Yasser Arafat's death last week marked an historic turning point in global affairs. While assessments of his legacy attempted to mediate his paradoxical roles, many international leaders saw his passing as a singular opportunity for a new start in the Middle East. A key figure in developing a viable Palestinian State over the next few years will likely be British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Tony Blair was born with his Sun in solid Taurus (May 6, 1953; 6:10 am; Edinburgh) and squaring Pluto, giving him the relentless determination to succeed as a politician as well as in pursuing his political agenda. His Sun also forms an exact sextile to Uranus and a conjunction to Pallas (the political intelligence asteroid), giving him unusually progressive vision.

Blair has taken heat for supporting the U.S. in Iraq, and consequently many observers have predicted his downfall. Astrologically as well, his chart has been battered by difficult transits. However, at the moment he may be due for a new start himself, as transiting Saturn has recently crossed his fourth house cusp, known as the point of endings and new beginnings.

Blair's Moon in Aquarius describes his sense of internationalism, and placed in his tenth house of career, his potential role as a global leader. This Moon is strengthened by being in mutual reception with Uranus (the Moon and Uranus are in each other's signs), and a conjunction with the North Node. Over the next two years Blair's progressed Jupiter will be forming an extremely favorable trine to his Moon, ensuring that he will be re-elected Prime Minister for a third term, and allowing him to assume additional responsibilities in the global village.

Pluto's Next Encounter: Neptune

Last week as transiting Pluto was closing in on its third and final square to the U.S. Mars (exact on November 23), the long-expected invasion of Fallujah began. Pluto made its first approach to the U.S. Mars with the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, and its successive hits to the war planet coincided with the direct use of America's military might.

Pluto's opposition to the U.S. Mars over the coming week promises intense fighting in Iraq, but just as Neptune (22 degrees Virgo) follows Mars (21 degrees Gemini) in the U.S. horoscope, so will doubt, uncertainty, and confusion follow the current military agenda. We saw this clearly during the Vietnam War, which was the last time transiting Pluto visited this degree area.

Transiting Pluto will make three challenging squares to the U.S. Neptune in 2005, which will shape much of the domestic dialogue. Neptune's rulership over oil and gas points to Bush's intentions to drill in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which is expected to be a political hot potato. In the business world, Pluto to Neptune also brings a fight for survival, a shake-out in the pharmaceutical industry.

Look for huge government support of favored drug companies, as in Medicare, and buy-outs, mergers, and the introduction of new super drugs. The contrary is also true, some drugs will face huge liability lawsuits, with Merck's Vioxx being the most recent example. A controversial study attacking the popular supplement Vitamin E represents a system-wide assault on alternative therapies. Also expect Canada's inexpensive drug program to become a political football.

Scott Peterson: Guilty

Last week a California jury found Scott Peterson guilty of murdering his wife Laci and their unborn son Conner. Ever since Laci was reported missing on Christmas Eve 2002* the case has attracted spectacular media attention. The public has been mesmerized by Scott's version of events, and what investigators have learned, including Scott's secret affair he had with a massage therapist.

Scott Peterson was born a cryptic Scorpio (October 24, 1972; 9:36 am; San Diego), with his love planet Venus in duty-conscious Virgo. Venus is under tremendous pressure to conform to social expectations through the square to restrictive Saturn, yet with nebulous Neptune Rising, appearances can be deceiving. This Venus-Saturn square has been under the influence of transiting Pluto ever since the crime took place.

Why this case, of all the similar cases across the nation, should capture the public's attention seems due to Scott's planets being closely aligned with the U.S. horoscope. In addition to his Venus-Saturn being a perfect overlay to the U.S. Mars-Neptune, Scott has his Ceres (the parent-child asteroid), and his Chiron-Mars opposition in similar alignments. Most significantly, his Juno, the marriage asteroid, is found in Scorpio very near the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant.

The U.S. Scorpio Ascendant accounts for the national fascination with sex and violence, and Scott Peterson's psychotic response to his unhappy marriage (Juno) fulfills the nation's more lurid fantasies. He was found guilty last week as transiting Mars was conjunct his Sun. The sentencing hearing begins on November 22 when transiting Mars is conjunct the U.S. Ascendant and Scott's Juno.

* For more on this story, see NewsScope May 13, 2003. Laci Peterson was born May 4, 1975; 4:44 pm; Modesto, CA. Advanced astrologers will note that Scott's Juno is unaspected to any other planet in his chart, making this side of his psyche a wildcard.
