The October Surprise, Part 2

Fulfilling the stock market's tendency to collapse during the month of October, last week the Dow fell to its lowest point in eleven months as the price of oil hit a record high of $55 a barrel. In the political realm, the October surprise took the form of a slow motion train wreck, as partisan lawyers began filing lawsuits over voter fraud issues.

The way the planets are lining up, a contested result is certainly possible, even probable*. The main astrological culprit is Saturn, which is turning retrograde just after the election while in an extremely close opposition to Pluto, the nation's ruling planet. Transiting Saturn opposite Pluto has been called a "crisis of authority", and represents a structural challenge to the status quo, the way things are done.

Adding fire to the brewing tempest is Mars, currently traveling through the U.S. twelfth house of secrets and conspiracies. On election day Mars will be exactly squaring the U.S. Mercury, and heading for a square to the U.S. Pluto. The Mercury-Pluto axis refers to the legal minutia upon which the national justice system is based. Mars squaring this polarity is a legal fight.

Transiting Mars and Saturn square each other on November 7 as they simultaneously hit the U.S. Pluto. The days leading up to the celestial fireworks is bound to be filled with intense political jousting. Currently, pundits are saying that the only way to avoid such a systemic challenge is if one candidate achieves a decisive victory. One correspondent penned the pervasive sentiment: "God help the country if this election is close."

The Curse of the Bambino

Last week the Boston Red Sox took game seven of the American League Championship against the Yankees, and now face the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. If they win, it will be the first time since 1918 that they've won the World Series. Before 1918 they were the base team around, and won the Series in 1903, 1912, 1915, and 1916.

Baseball fans call it the Curse of the Bambino**, which began when Boston's owner traded the rising star Babe Ruth to the Yankees on December 26, 1919. A chart for this trade date (set for noon, Boston) reveals the Sun in Capricorn opposite Pluto, reflecting the owner's Faustian bargain involving its powerhouse hitter. The Capricorn Sun was concerned about the business, and sold Ruth for $100,000.

When the Red Sox won game seven on October 20 transiting Jupiter was squaring the Curse's Sun-Pluto axis, bringing tremendous enthusiasm and a great opportunity to finally win the World Series. The Red Sox have made it to the World Series four times since 1918, and each time they lost in the seventh game. This year, the seventh game will be on October 31, but transiting Jupiter will be out of range.

The Curse chart features a Jupiter-Neptune conjunction which fosters a belief in superstition. By secondary progression, this Jupiter-Neptune is now exactly squared by progressed Mars (and activated by the transiting Sun on Halloween). Progressed Mars is further weakened by being retrograde. This combination suggests that in all likelihood Boston will once again find a dramatic way to lose.

Wynton Marsalis and the House of Swing

Last Tuesday evening Wynton Marsalis presided over the opening ceremony for Rose Hall, a $128 million architectural wonder designed to honor jazz. Ever since 1983 when Marsalis won Grammy Awards for both classical and jazz in 1983, he's taken the lead in dignifying and ushering jazz into mainstream American culture through his performances, educational efforts and as artistic director for Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Wynton Marsalis was born with his Sun in the fine arts sign of Libra (October 18, 1961; New Orleans; time unknown). The year of his birth – 1961, features an influential Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, a planetary duo that signals great possibilities to be realized by hard work. Marsalis's personality is strongly shaped by this Jupiter-Saturn since his Libra Sun squares it, giving him opportunity and ambition.

His musical talent can be seen in his Mars-Neptune-Moon configuration. Neptune brings imagination, creativity, and a sensitivity to vibrations, while Mars manifests the intuitive imagery through action. His Mars-Neptune conjunction knows how to turn fantasies and visions into reality, and with the square to the Moon, the entire musical process feeds the soul, which in turn add emotional depth to the music.

Wynton Marsalis seems destined to shape the American landscape with the wonders of jazz since his Lunar Nodes are exactly aligned with the U.S. Moon. The Lunar Nodes can describe karmic or fateful connections, and with his South Node (25AQ24) exactly conjunct the U.S. Moon (25AQ28), he was meant to open the magnificent Rose Hall with the words "Welcome to the House of Swing."

* You read about it here first on September 27, 2004, with additional details on October 4. Advance astrologers will note that the U.S. progressed Mercury is retrograde, accounting for numerous voter irregularities, and is in the same degree as the U.S. Pluto, and transiting Mars and Saturn.
