Mary Cheney, Through her Father's Eyes
Is homosexuality a choice? A political storm was unleashed last
week following the final presidential debate when Kerry was asked
this question. In his response he mentioned Dick Cheney's daughter,
Mary Cheney, who is Dick Cheney's campaign manager, and wears
a gold ring to honor her relationship with her lesbian partner. "I'm
a pretty angry father," said the Vice President.
Mary Cheney* and the issues
she represents can be seen
in her father's horoscope
(January 30, 1941; 7:30
pm; Lincoln, NB). Dick
Cheney was born with Juno
Rising, indicating a keen
interest in meeting life
with a marriage partner.
He married his high school
sweetheart Lynne in 1964,
and they've remained married
ever since, though they
differ on the issue of
gay marriage.
The fifth house rules children,
and Dick Cheney's Venus
there refers to both his
daughters. Venus here has
several strong connections
to other planets in his
chart, reflecting the different
approaches his daughters
take on their individual
life paths. The trines
to Uranus and Neptune show
how their first daughter
Elizabeth has a fairly
straightforward, non-controversial
lifestyle.
Venus also opposes Chiron,
and this combination can
be seen as the "wounded
daughter", i.e., Mary.
Now transiting Chiron is
in a developmental opposition
to its natal position and
conjunct Venus, corresponding
perfectly to the sudden
emergence of Mary Cheney
onto the national stage.
Simultaneously, transiting
Uranus is opposing Dick
Cheney's Juno, creating
fracture lines in his marriage.
From the political angle,
transiting Uranus opposite
Juno is about gay marriage
as a wedge issue.
Ralph Nader, The Destroyer
As Senator Kerry and President Bush draw into a statistical dead
heat during the final two
weeks of the campaign, all eyes are on the critical battleground
states which will decide the outcome. Third party candidate Ralph
Nader** is attracting fewer voters this year, but his support
-- mostly taken from potential Kerry voters, is strong enough
in the swing states to tip the balance to Bush.
Transiting Jupiter, the
planet of luck and opportunity,
is well-placed in all three
candidates' charts on November
2. In Bush's, Jupiter sextiles
his Leo Ascendant, and
is heading for a very favorable
Jupiter Return (exact on
Inauguration day). In Kerry's
chart Jupiter is prominently
placed in his tenth house,
and empowered by a sextile
to Pluto. And in Nader's,
transiting Jupiter is exactly
trine his first house Venus.
Even though Jupiter is
benefitting Nader (February
27, 1934; 4:52 am; Winstead,
CT), he knows he will lose.
His strategy reflects the
relentless self-denial
of the Sun and Mars in
Pisces, which is to lose
and lose until he eventually
he destroys the two-party
system. Nader's role as
destroyer can be seen in
the prominence of his Pluto,
which rules his Midheaven,
and is under sharp developmental
tension from Jupiter and
Uranus.
On November 2, Nader's
progressed Moon is exactly,
to-the-minute trine his
Midheaven, indicating he
will be in the national
spotlight. This is no under-the-radar
campaign, but one that
has real impact. Also on
election day, transiting
Mars will be exactly opposite
Uranus, his chart ruler,
and in a fierce square
to his Pluto. People will
be angry at him, and we
can guess why.
Katie Couric Finds Someone New
The
perpetually perky Katie Couric was unusually busy last week as
she gave an uplifting tribute to Christopher Reeve, while only
a few days earlier was honored herself for her efforts in fighting
cancer. Then she appeared in Shark Tale as sea reporter Katie Current,
and announced she will serve as "godmother" to Carnival
Cruise Line's newest ship. And she confirmed she's separating from
her boyfriend, television producer Tom Werner.
Katie Couric was born with
her Sun in ambitious Capricorn
(January 7, 1957; Arlington,
VA; time unknown), a placement
that is fully energized by
a tight square to Mars in Aries.
Mars is strongly placed in
its own sign, and with the
connection to Capricorn, this
combination is sometimes referred
to as the "steamroller".
The Sun is also linked to Pluto
(trioctile), which further
stimulates her drive to excel.
Couric's partnership asteroid
Juno is located in cause-oriented,
freedom-loving Aquarius. It's
given some stability with the
sextile to Saturn, but also
a need for a great deal of
space due to the opposition
to Uranus. Her bi-coastal relationship
with Werner fit her busy schedule,
a situation that remained loosely
together for the last four
years.
For the last year and a half
Neptune, the planet of dissolution,
has been transiting back and
forth over her Juno. At the
moment Neptune is turning direct
while making its final conjunction.
Since Couric just experienced
a Jupiter Return in the partnership
sign of Libra, she may have
met someone new. We'll find
out as transiting Pluto heads
for her Venus over the next
few months.
* She was born in 1969, but
her birth date is unknown.
