Chiron's Poison

Last Tuesday regulators in Britain suspended the Chiron Corporation's production of flu vaccine due to a contamination problem. About 90 million Americans get flu shots each year, and since Chiron generally supplies about half of these, the country is left with a potentially huge health problem. Each year influenza kills some 36,000 people, and this number would be much higher without the vaccinations.

The Chiron Corporation's function and historical development resonates strongly with the astrological Chiron, known popularly as the Wounded Healer. The Chiron myth helps define Chiron's role in medicine and in the horoscope. His wound came accidentally from a poisonous arrow, an image readily morphed into the modern form of the vaccination shot which contains a tiny amount of the disease-causing virus.

In the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope, Chiron is found in the sixth house of health, underscoring its role in the public's well-being. The sixth house is also the house of the armed services, indicating some unsuspected ties between the two. In 1942 Jonas Salk first developed the influenza vaccine while under contract from the U.S. Army to help protect the troops. Today, Chiron the business continues to profit from Army contracts, most recently for a bird flu vaccine.

In late September, transiting Chiron was just turning direct, when the Brits discovered the contamination problem. Chiron's 51-year orbit is highly elliptical, so the stressful quarter cycles take place irregularly. As it happens, Chiron turned direct at 20 degrees Capricorn while forming an exact square to the U.S. Chiron, located at 20 degrees Aries.

Saturn Hits Fannie Mae

Last week a federal oversight committee issued a 211-page report on the accounting misdeeds of Fannie Mae, the nation's fourth largest company by assets and the largest financing source for home mortgages. Fannie Mae's CEO Franklin Raines was grilled at the House Subcommittee on Capital Markets, and subsequent media reports described the current situation as an Enron-scandal in the making.

Fannie Mae was privatized on August 1, 1968 (noon, Washington D.C.), and this horoscope describes the company's national prominence and current woes. The Moon at eight degrees Scorpio is exactly conjunct the U.S. Ascendant, and reflects the consumer-oriented policies. Pluto, often associated with financial clout, is conjunct the U.S. Neptune, where it fulfills the company slogan of its "Commitment to The American Dream" of home ownership.

Mars in home-oriented Cancer is located in the tenth house of business. Mars has some favorable aspects, but also squares Saturn, and this connection is driven to rise as fast as possible to a powerful, influential position. Since Venus, the ruler of the chart, squares deceptive Neptune in the company's second house of financial assets, fraudulent accounting practices becomes a natural. At the moment, progressed Mars is heading into, and activating this Venus-Neptune square.

On November 8, transiting Saturn turns retrograde while forming an exact conjunction with Fannie Mae's Mars. The preciseness of this link promises major trouble for the mortgage company. Since transiting Saturn also hits the U.S. Pluto, the fallout will likely have widespread, national repercussions. One possible scenario: the end of the real estate bubble.

Love Softens Charlie Sheen

Two weeks into the new televisions season, and the top ratings are predictably going to the crime and reality shows. A decade ago the top rated shows were mostly sitcoms, but current trends are leaving this genre gasping for air. Defying conventional wisdom, the CBS comedy "Two and a Half Men" is drawing some 16.5 million viewers, and finds itself in the top ten rated shows.

The unexpected hit stars former Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen (September 3, 1965; 10:48 pm; NYC), who was born with his Sun in hard-working Virgo. Sheen's Sun is under tremendous developmental pressure since it's conjunct Uranus and Pluto, and opposed to Saturn. This alignment teeters between radical, outlaw behavior (Uranus and Pluto) and building a responsible career (Saturn).

In 2001 when transiting Saturn and Pluto opposed each other, they also lit up Charlie Sheen's Sun-Uranus-Pluto-Saturn configuration. It changed his life. No more prostitutes, drug and alcohol binges, and incessant partying. He began dating Denise Richards (February 17, 1971), and they married on June 15, 2002. Fortunately for Charlie, the reform-minded transformation accorded to Saturn-Pluto was shaped by a double Venus vibe.

Using the technique of secondary progressions (one day after birth equals one year), Sheen's progressed Sun was conjunct his natal Venus. This once in a life time astro-event often brings love and marriage. Coincidentally, his progressed Venus was also entering his seventh house of partners. This doubled Venus influence mellowed him, brought him inner peace, a new child, and a hit TV series.
