The October Surprise
The Kerry camp was walking with a spring in its step last week, reflecting the consensus that the Senator won the first debate over the incumbent president. By one reporter's account, George Bush repeated the sentence "This is hard work" twelve times. With Kerry's energetic advance, the poll numbers are narrowing, though the crucial "undecideds" in the battleground states are still sitting on the fence.
On October 8 Bush* will have his second Saturn Return, something everyone experiences in their late fifties. Many people consider retiring under this influence or otherwise look toward their golden years. However, people are living longer nowadays, and the second Saturn Return may just be a time to mature and consider the possibilities over the coming decades. In any case, it marks a major life cycle, often punctuated by key transitional events.
Those who follow the stock market often hear the phrase "October Surprise" because the market so often crashes in this month. This October's surprise may also refer to geopolitical events, especially since transiting Mars is in the U.S. twelfth house of secret enemies and transiting Pluto opposes the U.S. Mars. One is reminded of the disastrous train bombings in Madrid just before their elections.
Also throughout October and into November transiting Saturn will be opposing the U.S. Pluto. This combination describes the challenge to authority, a crisis at hand. It's worth noting that the first invasion of Iraq began on January 16, 1991 as transiting Saturn was exactly conjunct the U.S. Pluto. If Bush safely steers the nation through this current dangerous phase, voters will reward him with another term.
Astrology and Complexity, Part 3
In his recent book The Hidden Connections, Fritjof Capra describes a new view of our collective reality that is becoming the emerging paradigm in science. The changing worldview is known as Complexity Theory, which studies the border regions between chaos and order. Following his summary of how this conceptual framework is transforming biology, meteorology, neurology, and sociology, he jumps into the more controversial issues of nanotechnology and the politics of globalization.
In Complexity Theory, fractals represent the same image at different levels of perception or experience. Similarly, the patterns made among the planets describe a set of conditions that become manifest at different levels of experience. For example, how a president interacts with the nation under a Moon-Mars square may be psychologically equivalent to how a father interacts with his family under the same aspect.
In the same way that one fractal image is nested within larger fractals, the family is nested within the nation's families (or simply, the nation), and at an even larger scale, the family of nations. The non-linear dynamics which connect these various levels of interaction can be diagramed using astrological principles. As described over the last two weeks, hurricanes and the military-petroleum complex are two examples of how astrology delineates the unfoldment of Complexity.
In Capra's book the mechanized global market is pitted against a model of sustainable development based on the assumption of Complexity Theory. Astrologically, Complexity correlates to Aquarius since both are about networking and systems thinking. With transiting Neptune in Aquarius, and in 2005 entering the U.S. fourth house, Complexity will soon be uprooting the foundations of the American worldview.
Yusef Islam, Humanitarian or Security Threat?
Yusef Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, was recently denied entry into the United States when his name appeared on a terrorist watch list. His London to Washington D.C. plane was diverted to Bangor, Maine, and then he was sent back to London. The singer who became famous for such hits as "Peace Train" and "Wild World", announced he was taking legal action against the U.S. government.
Yusef Islam was born with his Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Aquarius (July 21, 1948; 12:00 pm; London), a combination shared by Princess Diana and the United States. The sensitive, emotional side of Cancer is given a social outlet, and an interest in being of service to the larger group. Like Princess Diana, he found himself through his humanitarian efforts.
Mr. Islam was born with Mars in the secretive twelfth house. Mars here tends to act behind the scenes, with its most exalted efforts channeled into charitable organizations, just as he is known to do. However, Mars also squares Uranus, and this more rebellious side has a strong attraction to dangerous or even subversive activities, giving some credence to media reports that some of his donations went to Hamas.
Jupiter, the planet of faith, is strongly placed in Sagittarius, and is found in the third house of communications. Currently, transiting Pluto is right on his Jupiter, giving him a resurgence of religious enthusiasm. This case is bound to reach a wide audience, since his progressed Mars (indicating his charitable and/or subversive activities) is at eight degrees Scorpio, right on the U.S. Ascendant.
